I'm trying mill turning once again, but this time with a much larger part. This pulley hub mates to the pulleys I made in my previous video. Check it out here:

That was very entertaining, you've definitely got some interesting machining techniques! Great job on keep a clean shop, too! I feel like you might get a lot of runout using the VMC holding just your 3/8" shaft. Obviously it worked... but you can tell the difference in surface finish between the large and small diameters.

Yeah, and some of that had to do with the spindle stalling. It didn't help!

Looks great! I really need to learn how to mill turn.

Pretty cool! One thing about that bearing though: like all bearings, it really should be tight on that shaft, or else you will introduce chatter and slowly wear out that part. A bearing puller and a impact gun only take five seconds longer.

Yeah, I know. But for a 3 minute match, I'm not TOO worried. I would normally do a bearing puller, but it's pressed right up against the bottom of the pulley, there's nothing to grab. I might need to make a new version, and I might put some through-holes around the bearing, so you can use an arbor press to press dowel pins from the bottom to press out the bearing. I did this on another part and it works well.

Instead of dowel pins, tap them and then you can use pusher bolts to drive it off. Then you only need a wrench with you and not an arbor press. Also, you can probably wrap a single wrap of teflon tape on there and get the slop out.

Yeah, that would work too.

Why not turn it on your lathe? Also, when tapping, use the lathe chuck to hold it. Alternately, make some aluminum soft jaws out aluminum angle. Or leather for even softer stuff.

Thanks for your 2 videos on Mill Turning. I am about to try this on my Tormach 1100 PCNC. How did you define your Stock in Pathpilot since this would normally be your Tool parameters?

For a second, at 5:59, I was thinking you were another Matt Cremona... (Matt Cremona is a woodworking KZfaqr who, inexplicably, apparently loves to tap holes by hand.)

Barry Manilowa To some degree your post is accurate and is even tangentially related to what I said. Kudos!

Hello, I may sound stupid asking this, but at a antweight competition I am going to the rules state this: "All robot radio systems must have a way to change frequencies or coded channels to prevent radio conflicts. Having at least two frequencies or coded channels available is required. Lack of extra frequencies may result in a forfeit." I am wondering how to do this with my transmitter. ( I know nothing about transmitters) I have a cheap Hobby King 6 channel transmitter. Do you think it could be done with that? If not, What transmitter would I need. Thank you so much for being so responsive to my questions in the past. I really value your time.

Good question. This is a really old rule back when you had removable crystals in radios. Modern 2.4ghz radios bind or pair, so this isn't an issue. If you use a radio that binds to your receiver, you're good to go. Your transmitter has this.

Can you give more details on the VFD adjustments you had to make? I also have a fairly early 440 and suspect it of being easier to stall than it should be.
@RobertCowanDIY
@RobertCowanDIY 7 жыл бұрын
There were no adjustments. I just contacted Tormach and they replaced the driver for me after determining it was faulty. If yours is doing something similar, give them a call and see what they say. Mine was having issues getting up to 10K RPM.

This seems like it would put stresses on the spindle that aren't intended which would harm the accuracy the machine that produce in the long term
@RobertCowanDIY
@RobertCowanDIY 7 жыл бұрын
You are underestimating the amount of force a spindle can handle. This is pretty small compared to when I was machining titanium or tool steel. It will require more torque from the spindle motor, but the spindle is more than capable of handling radial loads.

I would not touch the cuttings with my hands while the workpiece is rotating. If you are holding some and they suddenly catch something and pull your hand. Is it safe though?
@RobertCowanDIY

You're correct. I almost cut myself and now keep my hands out of the mill at all times.

You seem to make things a little difficult. Why not use the lathe to do all the turning? And when tapping, why not use the V block to hold it securely?
@RobertCowanDIY
@RobertCowanDIY 4 жыл бұрын
I cover this in the video. My lathe isn't that great and this was at the limits of what I could do. And I didn't have v-blocks at the time, but I do now! I only had larger ones which didn't work for this part, but I got a nice set of smaller ones.

How to pulley tap on hub of a pulley???
@eng.raslan

Just when you think you saw it all , you simply see this intelligent use of a milling machine. Pretty awesome idea but I would still prefer to make the main turning phase on a regular lathe , much more convenient and much more safe also. Anyway that's only my opinion. Thumps up for you dude.
