I've never actually showed how I made the UHMW drive pods for Crippling Depression. In this video I show you the setup, machining, and some tips and tricks I've learned after making the first version.

Good stuff. FWIW, I started machining UHMW with a single flute Onsrud cutter based on one of your old videos (maybe Cuddles). I ending up moving to a double flute because you basically can move twice as fast (double the MRR). I also eventually got more confident and started removing material with a smaller shell mill I had. It’s a little freaky seeing a larger tool doing profiling, but at the end of the day it’s just another tool. I wonder if you could’ve done more of the outside halves with the Super Fly (like the actual profiling around the larger bosses) - faster removal and maybe a better finish as well? Good luck at Moto.

If you were doing this today, would you still use your Tormach or would your Avid have advantages?

moto2019 prep I guess? UHMW is definitely a whole other animal when it comes to trying to make nice, clean, precise parts, you basically need to just minimize expectations and focus on the important functional feature like you did. I hate working with the stuff. For deburring, the Noga S150 deburring blades work like a charm though for future reference, nothing else I've used comes close for plastic.

Yeah, sharp indexable tooling is where it's at! I'll check out the deburring blades. And yep, this was prep for Moto 2019.

Just a question, How exactly do you find events? Is there a website or something?

Is that a metric HAIMER? Didn't you have the tormach probe before?

Yep! I had the tormach probe, but I think I like the haimer better.

I have been looking at both and I'm not sure witch one I would like better... Can you explain why you like the HAIMER better? Is that a metric HAIMER you have?
@RobertCowanDIY

@@briandodds They are different. With the haimer, you don't have to connect it to the machine, which is a bit of a hassle. It's not automated, but for some reason it seems quicker. The cord on the passive probe is actually pretty annoying. If they had a way to make it wireless, or connect in a different spot, it would be much better. But it connects on the OUTSIDE of the machine, so you need to open the side of the enclosure and connect it, which is tricky with one hand. I have a metric haimer, but it really doesn't matter, since you really only care about '0', not anything else.

Thanks for your input. Good point about the probe connection being on the outside... I have only had my 440 for a few weeks now and need to learn how to not break tools on it before I spend the money on a haimer or probe. GWizard came highly recommended but seams to not work very well for 440 speeds and feeds... :( Already busted several tools and the ones that didn't break stall the spindle.

Although more expensive, the Hallmark Impact Tolerant Touch Probe is far superior in ease of use, accuracy, and repeatability. My Haimer just sits in the drawer now.

So at one part you mention that you don't like background music in videos and stuff. With machining videos I often find background music distracting from how mesmerizing the whole process is.

FOUND TAPES I think UHMW is a good material for boxes. Very scratch and puncture resistant.
@RobertCowanDIY

scratch resistant? it scratches VERY easily. Heck, it scratches just by looking at it. It's extremely slippery and resists wear though.

@@RobertCowanDIY sorry worded that bad I mean how if you try to cut it, it will not go through easily due to it being so soft. Surface scratches yes, but easily slicing it open no.

That's not Delrin? Those chips look too nice to be UHMW...

it's UHMW, delrin is a lot harder and less bendy.
