3 жыл бұрынThe Portuguese national team has provided some incredible talent over the years. Eusebio, Figo, Rui Costa, and eventually Cristiano Ronaldo. However, until 2016 aa trophy had always alluded them, despite often reaching the later stages of the competition. In 2004, Portugal had perhaps their greatest ever generation while hosting the Euro's in their home country, losing in the to unlikely victors Greece. Twelve years later, in Euro 2016, Portugal would finally get their long awaited trophy. This time beating out hosts France in the final. This is their story....

I was paying attention to french media the whole time during the tournament. They spent the entire month slandering portugal and their style of play, even going as fat as calling them "disgusting". As if giroud sissokho matuidi and gignac were ballerinas on the ball. Brilliant stuff from portugal to shut them up and their arrogance!!!

Because they were actualy dreadful. They rode their luck until the very end to knick the trophy. One of the flukiest team in the history of sport. I guess it was maybe some sort of payback for all the great portuguese sides throughout history who never won anything...

1984, 2000, 2006. Heartbreaks, all of them. I sincerely thought we would never beat that team, specially at their home. And then this game happened. That Eder goal is probably the most portuguese thing of it all: he just "believes" that somehow that ball is going to make the distance and it actually did. Força Tugas, rumo ao bicampeonato!!!!!!

I watched this in a bar with more than a hundred people, everyone supporting France, with me and my friend supporting Portugal. When Eder scored and then the match ended, there was absolute silence apart from me and my friend screaming and jumping crazy :)))) it was so amazing

I was very disappointed of the result this night (I'm French btw) but I, now more than ever, believe that this trophy was well deserved and this euro had to be for the Portuguese people. Such an hard-working, strong and proud nation. I mean, God couldn't allow Portugal not to win a trophy. Congrats

Thanks. I'm glad we won but i don't think we deserved it for a second. We shouldn't even have made it past the group stage but luckily for us and unlickily for the sport, the 4 best third places went through for the first time that year. It has a bittersweet taste. I cried eatching this video and it was one of the best moments of my life, but still it never felt quite right to me. It woukd have felt better if we deserved it instead of being lucky all the way through.

No problem, it's just sad for many players on the team at that time that deserved to win something, but, I think Greece needed it at that time, your country has been going through tough times for more quite a long time. So it was nice for you guys, and the team really was unified, what's funny is that we did almost the same in 2016. Playing defense, not scoring many goals but being solid behind. Your people probably gave them the energy to win. Same as I felt for our Portugal in 2016. It's weird cause I wasn't worried at all in the final against France, it was like there was something protecting us. I had a greek friend (Virginie) who was living in Paris at the time, we met a few days after we lost in 2004, we spoke about that, and she said that she was amazed how i wasn't mad at the greek team because of the loss. It's just sad that I think that Greece just did what they had to do, they kept united, everyone on the team focused on winning. I was just disappointed by our players cause they really looked unable to react. But in the end it's probably that Greece was really good on defense in that competition.

That match was inappropriate for anyone suffering from cardiac problems... It was legendary... Specially that missile from Rui Costa...

@@kesterak168 Portugal didn’t lose to France , Belgium didn’t produced much all that match . 1 shoot , one goal so they got lucky that’s football. Portugal could of had won but the ball didn’t wanted to enter inside the net. Now it’s time to move on and expect a bit of more luck next World Cup .

No they didn't, France dominated and send balls to the posts, to everywhere and then a one legged man like Éder scored a goal far away from China, that e never did before or ever since. And then that's that. And Portugal as had terrible games since then. The Portuguese team of 1966, 1984, 200, 2004 and 2006 , daaamn, they were sick powerhouses. But this ? A damn shame and a joke this Euro ? Ties and terrible performances .

@@shabibshaikh3346 That's precisely the point. They created nothing in 120 min not talking about the other 6 average games they had against piss poor opposition. Right at the end a cabbage of a player scored the goal of a lifetime out of the blue. Tbf kind of left a vague sour taste but I had to google it because the whole thing was as memorable as the last time I blew my nose. They were not top 5 in europe then and they aren't now.

Honestly, after Ronaldo's retirement, I think the Portugal national team is gonna come back stronger than ever. Imagine the new generation that this man has inspired for his country. Even someone like MBappe or Son Heung Min were aspired to be at that level and both had delivered. The new era of Portugal, in the next decade or two, is gonna be very interesting to keep an eye on!

i was abroad at the time, volunteering in a hostel in albania with my girlfriend. no portuguese people around us. in that day an icelandic couple and a norwegian guy i think, came to check in. while waiting, we were close to them. they were talking about the final of that day. the girl said she wanted france to win because of what ronaldo told about iceland, and his boyfriend agreed. i needed to say something, so i told them "look, i am portuguese and i can tell you deeply we want to win this badly". you can imagine their surprise: never in a million years they would have thought the couple in front of them, volunteering in that hostel, could be portuguese. their expressions changed immediatly and i felt i was somehow defending my country, and also because we were the underdogs in that day, pretty much what iceland was during the competition. they were not bad people though, they weren't just expecting portuguese people there. then, we were watching the game with a young french couple that came in that afternoon. they were obviously not happy. at the end she said" you didnt deserve it!" and i was like " look, i am so happy right now, that i really dont care". i dont think we played great football, but when we did we lost unfairly against greece, but mostly for me against france in 2000, where we were the best team of the tournament. the first person i remembered was abel xavier. in my heart that euro win was for him.

@@costenics_sw for me with greece was very painful, but it was more manageable - some portuguese people mentioned 2004 final i just remembered the 2000 semi finals. .i mean, i was very sad at the time because of charisteas. but at least it was a team that kinda won by a miracle, even though i thought we played better - and greece and portugal i feel are similar countries. we didnt play well in 2016, for me we deserved it because we deserved in 2000 and didnt get it. this was our "revenge" even though i dont like this world. but we lost in 84, 2000 and 2006 against france. finally this was our time.

it was as we call the...the golden generation....thwy won the young world cup at estádio da luz years before....but soccer isn´t always fair and our national team had to suffer some years before lift the cup....we didn t play our best game but we won.this time....and if my dreams and hopes allow...we will win again.Not because we re the underdog but this time we will proof that we are the bets national team in the world and will conquer any fan of this sport.As a nation we were small and poor since the age of christ. As a people we are strong.PLease don´t mess with Portuguese people.We will conquer!

As a fan who supported Portugal throughout the tournament and watched every documentary, I think this is the best documentary by far. The choices of words and moments really grasped the heart of this incredible story. Amazing storytelling!

never forget that there was so many that doubted us, and us Portuguese or the true ones would always believe in ourselves, and in the end we won and we will never forget that moment. We all ran to the streets and celebrated till almost 5 AM in Portugal, and everyone was out with the our great flag, what a moment it was. Always remember a game has 90 minutes. Believe until the end. The greatest Euro ever, not just because we won but what we learned, and enjoyed. The music, the hype and the joy. Até ao fim! 🇵🇹💙

From losing to Greece in the final to getting knocked out of multiple tournaments in the later stages by a Zidane penalty, we deserved this. We deserved to win a trophy. Was it beautiful football? no. But we won, and we will always be remembered as champions. Qatar is up next 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🇵🇹

I miss this team... We proved that the most important thing is being a team and winning as a team. Not having the best players individually. It is sad how we lost it yesterday. 5 yrs ago we were more united, that was what made us win.

We played well against a defensive Belgium, the ball didn’t wanted to enter inside the net. It was our best match in the euros , sometimes it happens. Now it’s time to look forward and try to reach the later stages of the World Cup .

My Portuguese girlfriend told me how she watched this finals. She was on a train from Lisbon to her home in Porto and was the only one with a decent screen, a tablet. The whole carriage was huddled together, watching over her shoulders, even the conductors. After the goal, the whole train was shaking because everyone was jumping, a small miracle accident happened. Hope I'll celebrate in Portugal this year too!

Watching Portugal's hardships and their French Curse reminded me of our basketball's team's struggles and perseverance to join the FIBA World Cup and above all, overcome the Korean Curse. But we did it in 2013 and then in 2021. We know the feeling and personally I was also betting on Portugal to win. And oh, that sweet sweet victory indeed! Viva Portugal! Saudações das Filipinas.

2015-16 season was one of ronaldo's most inspirational seasons of all time, i still tear up a bit to how awesome a player he was, that season it seemed he was a little bit more than just a football player that season, and his euros win with portugal proved exactly that.

I've seen my club, FCPorto, win it all but there's only achievement that makes me cry: The Euro victory. Trashed and humiliated throughout the whole tournament, never won any trophy, even losing at home... this one was so so special!!

after that final i was happy for Cris and portugal.. I have seen him facing disappointment in all those previous tournaments. He totally deserved to win it man litreally tried everything to win for his country.. Portugal should be grateful for having a Player like him.. Now they have a fantastic squad.I hope they will do good in world cup.

I was so lucky to be in Lisbon at Nos festival and had the last day free to watch the game! It was amazing, people were chucking their dogs in the air and everything!

Best documentary out there in English about Portugal ‘ s Euro 2016 Championship Victory ! I was so happy to finally see my country win something with my father who passed away soon after ! Portugal national soccer team had come so close to win so many times , but it always ended in disappointment and sadness ! That’s the way this game goes , for every champion ‘s happiness there will 20 or more teams that will be going home crying ! I hope that Portugal National team will watch this and get ready for World Cup 2022 in Qatar! Let’s go Portugal ! Força Ronaldo ! 🙏🏻💪🏻👍👊❤️
