Michael Waltrip had one of the worst crashes in auto racing history at Bristol in 1990 when his car was torn apart after crashing through a gate. Amazingly, Waltrip was uninjured and race the following day.
this video was produced using the amateur videos of a fan who was in the infield that day. The incredible footage that focused on Waltrip provides an unseen look at this remarkable moment.
Thank you to whoever filmed the video, their name has been lost before their footage was given to me.

This particular Michael Waltrip crash is almost one of folklore. Its almost impossible to talk to an older really old school NASCAR fan for an hour at a track down south race weekend somewhere or anywhere for that matter and this crash doesn't come up in the conversation at some point. I've never seen a roll cage crumble like that in my life! Luckily it hit on the right hand side of the car and the car absorbed the energy allowing Mikey to walk away unscathed. Also, every track on the NASCAR Cup and Xfinity schedule minus Martinsville these days has tunnels for the haulers and track equipment. But Martinsville has fashioned their entry gate into a concrete safer barrier which dead bolts in before racing begins, so we should never see an accident like this again. Thanks for this amazing video nascarman, I haven't seen this race and wreck in a long while!

That wasn't the only crash of that kind, with a stupid ass gate like that, at a track somewhere.... There was more than one inside wall with a place where a drive could splatter his face too. I was at INDY the day Kyle Petty had his throttle hang wide open and he hit outside and inside walls a total of 4 times at very high speeds. He was knocked out cold and I think a broken femur finished his season.

@@rodneycaupp5962 Shockingly Kyle raced the next week albeit under a lot of pain. He suffered a concussion and broken ribs but not a broken femur, that was the injury that kept Bill Elliott sidelined after his horrific wreck at Talladega earlier in the year. Kyle then realized it was safer to take some time off for some healing to happen and thus missed Michigan and Bristol.

My parents were at this race in 1990, 10 years before I was born. They still have pictures of the wreck stored in our attic somewhere. Even before I was born, they had been to plenty of races, both NASCAR and dirt track races, and they both agreed Michael's wreck was the worst wreck they've ever seen. Certainly is amazing Michael wasn't injured in this one.

Johnny Sauter not only plowed into the exposed carcass of Harmon's car in the middle of the racetrack but then takes a nearly head-on shot into the inner wall as well. Racing is a fickle beast like that sometimes, horrific wrecks without one injury but a not so bad looking crash can be deadly.

I'm surprised ya didn't include the footage of his older brother Darrell Waltrip's reaction as he watched his brother's crash in sheer horror. Darrell looked horrified and literally started crying right then & there......and no one could blame him. That wreck was REALLY BAD. I will never forget the look of terror & dread on Darrell's face when that happened. It was just as unsettling to watch as the wreck itself, seriously. We all thought Michael may have been dead at first, especially when we saw that steering wheel just hanging completely out of the wreckage like that.

Well by this time Nascar Cup was supposed to be racing V6's and Busch/Xfinity was supposed to be in 4 cylinder cars!! Now that would have been the death of Nascar. When the Busch Series was in V6's it was talked about that Cup was gonna be in V6's before the mid 90's. That came and went but, I am betting we will see a hybrid or electric type of car racing series under the nascar banner before the 20's are over. Not saying or definitely hoping it isn't going to be Cup but, I bet Xfinity will be that way or possibly another new series all to itself.

Definitely rates among the top 5 worst non-fatal wrecks in NASCAR history. In fact, the only ones I can think of immediately that are in the same class are Geoff Bodine in 2000 at Daytona and Dale Earnhardt at Talladega in 1996. Granted Earnhardt's didn't destroy the car to the level that the other two did, but the sheer violence of the wreck and given that the car was caved in at the roof made the crash seem like it wouldn't have been survivable.

That was before they were building the cars so stiff that the energy was transferring to the drivers...that's why you saw the deaths in the late 90s and early 2000s. I saw a lady ask him for his autograph at his steakhouse while waiting to be seated. He wasn't eating. He was the boss. He was just standing around yelling at his employees. She walked up and told him she had been a big fan for his whole career. He said LOUDLY, "Lady, I don't race anymore. I don't even watch the sh!t. Get the F away from me". Well, almost the whole line left, including me and my children. We never went back. He lost a lot of customers and fans. He lost a whole lot of business.
