Great video. I understand the 3 finger hammer-ons, but am confused by the technique of the 3 pull-offs. Are all 3 fingers in position on the string at the beginning of the pull-off?

hi steve. would you know why, when i do some pull off's exercise, i am always on the verge of feeling a tendinitis arriving in my upper hand? i am conscious that i am always tense in my hand and i try to relax, but if i do more than 5 mins, my hand, the upper part, becomes sore. most of the time i stretch beforehand like you say, but nevertheless i always fear i could get injured

Thanks for watching Steve's video , Arcidiavolo! The first thing to remember is that if you're just learning how to do pull-offs, you're using muscles and tendons you're not used to using, so it's easy for those muscles and tendons to get overworked, even in the best of circumstances. So, you're right to be careful, and keep stretching! With that said, I (Mike from GuitarZoom) will relate my own experience with guitar playing and tendonitis: I've been playing guitar on and off since I was about 14 (I am 41 now), but a few years ago I decided to get a little more serious about it, so I started playing a lot more. On top of that, I started playing bass in a 2-piece (and sometimes 3-piece) band. And long story short, I developed tendonitis in my left (fretting hand) forearm, and I had to quit playing guitar and bass for a while until it cleared up. When I started trying to play guitar again, I could play for a few minutes and feel fine, but then the tendonitis started coming back. I finally figured something out: the way I was holding my guitar was putting my left arm into an awkward position when I played certain chords. And this awkward position combined with the squeezing/pressing movement of making chords was what was causing me pain. It wasn't the chords, it was how I was holding my guitar. I play sitting down most of the time, and from the time I was 14 until this happened, I would rest my guitar on my right leg. I decided to try resting the guitar on my left leg instead, and I could tell a difference pretty much immediately. Moving the guitar over to my left leg forced me to hold my left arm out away from my body more, which put my left hand in a less awkward position when I played chords. And long story short, that was about 2 1/2 years ago, I play guitar pretty much every day, and I haven't had any more problems with tendonitis. So, next time you play guitar, pay close attention to how you're holding your guitar. There could be a simple adjustment you could make that could fix the problem right away. Hope this helps! Keep stretching and being careful, and be sure to see a doctor if the problem gets worse. :-) Just wanted to let you know, Steve’s brand-new course Guitar Practice Made Easy is now available. Yeah buddy I steep my hand in uncooked rice for a hour and work a stress ball. Not sure if it doing anything but it makes my finger tips hard and more responsive at least. I'm not even old I just play a lot.

📍Having a Hard time w,/ Pull offs. Not too sure my guitar may be causing part of problem. Plus my speed I guess. From what Ive learned it actually hitting a open string, plucking down. New guitar ( used) has Thick strings on it. Swear they are , higher then 11s.. Not so easy. Frustrated!

Thanks for watching, Sue! Quick question... is your guitar acoustic or electric? As a general rule, acoustic guitar strings are heavier than electric strings, so pull-offs (as well as hammer-ons, string bends, and other techniques) will be harder to do on an acoustic. For example, with electric guitar strings, .012s are the heaviest strings you can usually find, but on an acoustic, .012s are light gauge. Whether you have an acoustic or an electric, you can get a new set of strings without spending a lot of money. You can try out light or extra light strings... lighter strings will definitely make pull-offs easier to play. Hope this helps! Also, just wanted to let you know, the GuitarZoom Premium Membership is now available as a monthly subscription. Go here for details: guitarzoom.com/membership-signup/ Be sure to check it out, and no matter what, keep playing! :-) -- Mike from GuitarZoom P.S. Steve usually uses extra light strings on electric.
