My mom used to make these for my brother. We called them Cavalry shirts, and my brother even wore it like John Wayne, 1 or even 2 buttons undone. Mind you, this was in the last 70's... Not 1870's but 1970's. OH, and she even piped them in yellow

That rocks! My wife and I made pro wrestling gear for many years (tights, trunks, masks, etc). Hardly anyone makes anything anymore. When I was a kid half the women in town (and ALL the teachers in my school) wore clothes they had made themselves out of doubleknit polyester. There was a fabric store called Mr. Yard in our tiny town that was just busy as hell all the time in those days. They even sold novelties and comic books as well as fabric, patterns and scissors.

Krieghoff Luger Pistols had Anchor with dagger superimposed as their logo. Krieg means War, Hoff = Hope. in Germany. dagger represents war, anchor represents hope. also, letter H and K on either side, for Heinrich Krieghoff, NOT Heckler & Koch.

Another finest kind tutorial. I Always admired those shirts on movie actors but had no idea what they were. Mucho gracias! Yours is the only western themed channel I Patreonize. Your fancy dancy edits and camera framing really spice up a potentially dull topic. That and your visial style adds to the charm. The norm for channels seem to be voice overs or talking heads. You take your channel to an EI level (Entertaining and Informative). A lot of extra work. I would hope more viewers appreciate the difference and Patreonize. Move 'em out!

As both an "old westian" who sews, and a volunteer firefighter, I really need to get around to making a red wool bib front shirt. It's criminal that I haven't done so already. Fun fact, the reason firefighters wore them was because the bib prevented sparks and embers from getting inside the shirt.

South Union mills makes a replica of a bib shirt found on the steamship Arabia and they are gorgeous and well worth looking at. Most of the clothes that I don’t make myself come from south Union mills. They make the most accurate reproductions I’ve found of period clothing unlike from frontier classics, scully, wah maker etc that get the material and patterns all wrong. I highly suggest checking them out they go above and beyond and they truly sell nothing whatsoever that is inaccurate! Hope you are well- your holster and clothes making friend from Maryland !

When I lived in Cheyenne between 1976 and 1979. My mothers friend was a Taylor in town that did custom shirts. Her name was Lona and her shirts were known as Lona's Originals. During Cheyenne frontier days she set up her booth and sold custom shirts. She would take orders and fill them throughout the year. Her booth normally had hundreds of custom shirts. At the time, her shirts ran 60 to 75 dollars for an off the rack one. And the most expensive I saw was 300.00 for a hand embroidered eagle on the back purchased by Charlie Daniels.

Very awsomely interestingly informative video, I really liked and enjoyed it, great job and well done, keep up the great work. I learned alot about frontier bib front shirts from the old west and got a lot of inspiration for my Retro, videogames, computer and old west frontier inspired myths-archive franchise project Mysteriarch Mythos: Pixel Pioneers and the polygon realms. I already finished the first draft of story #1 of my Mythos project and are now working on writing story #2 and I wrote a couple games for my stories too, that are called Mharzoh VideoLand Ventures 7400 and TetraForce-XelQuest Ventures 7400, that were developed by the company Katori VideoDistributions games Inc back in the year 1993 and released in 1996. I'm definitely going to add bib front shirts to my stories and world, alongside other clothing from tge old west and clothing from the 70s to the 2000s. There's a old west frontier island in my storys world called Tabbantha Isle.

@@ArizonaGhostriders Thanks. Today I'm working on writing story #1 of my mythos project and trying to think of a title for story #1 that is already finished. I'm getting further inspiration from the Japanese mythology, spiritualism and folklore within the legend of zelda series as well as inspiration from the mario franchise especially super mario 64. I'm planning on adding a scifi fantasy version of samsara and the uroboros symbol to my stories and world, which is a sureal, nonsensical and weird type world with dream logic, video game logic and cartoon logic as tge worlds physics.

I had my first shield-front shirts custom made for me in 1975, so I was an early adopter. More recently, I was fortunate to purchase some very nice ones from River Junction when they were selling out old stock on eBay. I got them for half price in 3XL which I need. Sorry you missed out. Real shield shape burgundy with blue piping, and forest green with yellow piping which I over-dyed green. Paul said they were not able to restock because the ladies who made the shirts were just not ablate make them anymore. Arthritis I guess. It looks like some people are still making them, but the ones with piping are rare. My favorites are these, but with smile pockets under the shield. Not Old West, but hey.

The bib shirt was standard wear among cavalrymen. George Custe4 was most likely wearing one the day he died along the bluffs overlooking the Little Bighorn. It was much to hot to be wearing a buckskin jacket though h3 was most definitely wearing buckskin pants.

The subject of Billy’s shirt is truly fascinating and the story of that image. I was reading to hell on a fast horse by mark lee Gardner and he talked about that in detail. The fact that there’s no real conclusion of the color of material for the shirt is a rare chance of us being able to take some reasonable liberties in its replicas. Also the fact that all of his friends who saw the picture said it looked odd and not like how he really dressed. The most common consensus from the people I’ve talked to and books I’ve read is he just dressed up with studio props for the most part because everyone said he really typically dressed like the local New Mexicans. That being wearing basic standard clothing of the time but with wide brimmed low crown sombreros and an occasional sarape

That's correct. It was a traveling photographer, so may not have had a lot of clothes. However, Paulita Maxwell (I believe it was her), said she never liked the way Billy looked FOR that photo. I think it may not have been all his. Either way...it's all we have. Since we don't really know, we go with what we have. The shirt could have been red also, but with the lighting in the show, we went with blue (the other main color).

I went through a WahMaker phase when I was in my 20s. Had a bunch of period shirts, but sadly missed out on the bib shirt. Was pretty easy to pull off a banded collar in polite company, but the idea of a Bib shirt made me very self conscious.

The Monkees used a versiion of the western bib shirt for their stage costume on their TV Show. It seemed that Mike Nesmith was a big fan of that style, being from Texas and the costume designer Vincent Dee ran them up in red and blue along with black velvet.

I made one out of red plaid wool (customer wanted that fabric). The store bought pattern was not made to be a pull over shirt, but had a button up front. Then it was found that he was allergic to wool, so the solution was a navy blue cotton lining. The bib hid the button up shirt front and came out looking very good. I have to say I was sick and tired of making button holes by the time the project finished. It did look good with the bib partly unbuttoned. Should I ever make another one I will go for the pull over pattern !

I love bib shirts, have a few of them and it isn't something you see much out here in Saskatchewan (rarely see western stores selling them). Like banded collar shirts, they are different and more interesting than the current basic shirt style we have today. I always wonder if shirts like this went out of fashion or if manufacturers didn't want to make all these multiple styles and people slowly stopped making their own clothes so the current basic style of button shirt just became the standard.

I wonder if you could make them with false ties and bring them back for button-ups, like a cross between a dickie and a clip-on tie, but up front, literally. Maybe even a regular tie. Or maybe underneath a regular tie. You've already got the buttondowns for the collar, and you could use the top button and maybe one above the belt, so we would only need to make double-breasted buttons unaccountably fashionable on shirts, first, so that there could be some standardization of dimensions. I think this is doable.
