I just visited my local vege farmer to pick up 100lbs potatoes - wohoo. It's the one thing I don't grow. He uses only horse manure for fertilizer - over 60+ years; he's doing something right. :)

I'm in zone 5a and this time last year we already had snow. It's still so hot here. I take each warm day as a blessing and hope my last watermelons can pop off before the frost does

So if you just leave one or two (or 3) cucamelons drop to the ground and throw some soil on top, you will have plenty next year. They come up on their own :) I only planted them once years ago, and they've been coming up every year, ever since (zone 7a, NJ). Enjoy!

SWEET potatoes don’t die back like regular potatoes to indicate their readiness. I just watched no-till farmer’s vid on when to harvest an how to cure them. Highly recommend as it was super to the point. Don’t let them freeze.

talking about 'people don't care' When my sister was getting married we were able to go to a rose farm to pick flowers (that my mom would make into her bouquet) The farmer walked with us and pointed out the 'perfect' specimens. Ha was horrified when my mom said no and chose roses whose stems were not straight but bent to the side. She wanted roses with character and personality. After the wedding we went back to show him pictures of the bouquet and he strongly approved of her choices. He even said that it gave him ideas on how to sell those imperfect stems.

Cucamelons, the struggle is real. Zone 5a, 3-4 hours south west of you in Allegany County. Took 3 years just to get a few seeds to even germinate. 4 years until I had a few plants.

I hear you about the fall business! I went out to the garden after a week and was surprised to find that there is so much still looking awesome despite my neglect! Making my end of season bouquets as well as picking the last of the tomatoes the slugs and critters have not eaten! Lisianthus looks great! I sure wish they would bloom a few weeks earlier as it seems I waited so long for them and now many might not bloom before the frost! Also my Dahlias were a bust this year even though I planted them early! Oh well, so much beauty to be thankful for! I also am loving the Queen Limes 😊! Looking forward to sitting with my seed catalogs, a crackling fire and watching the snowflakes fly! 🍂🍁🔥❄️❄️❄️⛄️🌨

Still stunning flowers. I’m in Rhode Island and I’m in the 40s at night. Odd September. Not 1 80 degree day. We usually have very warm days. 😮

I grew cucamelons for the first time. I’ve also definitely found when they’re smaller they have a more cucumber-like flavor. They seem to get more sour as they get bigger. They make great quick hot brine pickles which are a perfect garnish anytime you need a hit of salt and acid in your meal. I’ve heard that the roots can be overwintered as they form tuberous root systems and that they then grow more vigorously the next year. I’m going to give it a try, because why not 🤷‍♀️ PS how fitting that a mouse nibbled on the AKA mouse melon 😊

I love to grow scented geranium! Hopefully you escape your frost but it's been a pretty good season. We've been prepping for hurricane Fiona, I cut absolutely everything yesterday and now we're 'storm baking' :) We're in Nova Scotia and it's supposed to make direct landfall within 24 hours. But at least the house is full of pretty flowers to look at!

@@ilenehales7849 we are fine, just some sunflowers down but we have family in Cape Breton who had giant trees fall on their house. Luckily, they slept in the basement knowing it was a possibility. There will be quite the cleanup for awhile!

I love cucamelons. We do pickle a lot of them but I still like them fresh and in salads. What a great garden season you have had!

Since frost is expected, I'm wondering if one could just pull the entire zinnia plant, get out of the cold, take it to a sheltered area such as a garage to harvest salvageable blooms and compost the rest. Maybe that's more work than help. Certainly on your grand level it's not feasible. I am going to look in to that fertilizer you recommended. What a bountiful harvest! You've sparked my interest in gardening...just as we near the season end. My oh my! Those rows of gomphrena look so pretty. It's been a very long summer to get my raised beds prepared. Tons and tons of advance preparation and I'm just now seeing progress. Also in zone 4b (Minneapolis), we're in 60s and 70s, today 50s. Yikes! Time is swift.

As beautiful as the Queen Lime series is, I found that only the red lime had a longer vase life. The lighter colored varieties turned brown at the tips of the petals and looked 'dingy' only after a few days in the vase. Next season I am sticking with the Benary's Giant for cut flowers and Profusion (compact) for edging my landscape. Powdery Mildew is real! Will follow your lead and apply copper fungicide next year (note to self). This is it! Digging up the annuals this weekend. As always, love your content! Cheers!

We had a frost in mid Michigan this morning but didn’t seem to hurt anything, whew! Good for a bit longer, my dahlias are beautiful. Maybe it will make it a bit easier for you to focus on the greenhouse more, it’s but always a mixed feeling!

I found cucamelons to be slow to get going, and not all plants thrived. I felt like it was a lot of effort and space for not much flavour. But one weird veg that I DO like and now grow every year are Fat Baby Achocha. They’re green and spiky, crunchy and have a green pepper meets a cucumber kind of taste. They’re great sliced in salads, stir fry and on pizza. I suspect they’d be good stuffed too. And v prolific, even in a wet and windy U.K. summer. And they’re SO cute looking. The seeds are very easily saved too as they don’t cross polinate. The flowers attract hoverfly so it’s brilliant for attracting beneficial insects into the garden I haven’t tried the regular Achocha yet, just the ‘Fat Baby’ ones but maybe in future I’ll give them a go too.

"They're growing on me" - if you stand close to the cucamelon vines for too long, they *will* grow on you! Those vines are uber-proliferative :)

Love your videos and cannot believe you guys have a frost warning already! We are sweltering down here in South Alabama zone 9a with 95 degree temps in late September. Just watching you harvest in a hoodie and hat made me feel a little cooler. We are praying for some fall temps. I love how you end your videos with a selection of “songs of the harvest”. Wow, this season flew by. I have so enjoyed your videos. I grew Lisianthus from seed for the first time this year. I started in beginning of February and I just now have bloom stalks!! Only 4 plants made it and 2 have the blooms coming. I'm in 5b and we could get frost anytime really, but I'm still hoping to see those beautiful flowers!

The green house in my area let's ya go cut your own flower & pay for them when your done. You could do that near the end of season when your busy. It is a shame to let them go to waste. I love those little ball ones. Can't remember the name. I would put a bunch of them alone for a vase. They are cute. 🙂🇨🇦

My son loves to stand in the garden and just munch away on cucumelons. You can't process pickle the melons only refrigerator or fermentation pickles. I tried they get mushy. Sad frost already great harvest.

We've had a few light frosts here but tomorrow night it's supposed to be in the 20's so my beautiful zinnias and other flowers will get killed😥. Makes me sad. Seems like I just planted them yesterday.

I don't supposse you could do a "how to" for planting lily bulbs in pots for those of us in apts who can't plant them in the ground? I'm in zone 6b and have a non-heated indoor room that i can keep them in, but idk if it's cold enough also, seems like those tart cucamelons would be good in water with mint as a kind of cucumber mint "lemonade"

Frost??? Noooo. It seems way too soon. You still have so many beautiful blooms left 😓. Nicole where do you get your notifications/info from for frost warnings? Is it just on a weather app? I’m looking for something reliable. I use the weather channel app and it seems ok. Just curious what others use. 😊

I wonder if being planted near the scarlet runner beans had something to do with the success of the Cucamelons? Btw they cook cucumbers like you would summer squash in China. Wonder how the Cucamelons would taste sautéed?

I have a very important question for you Nicole... Now that grandpa is famous, and an "INFLUENCER" has his celebrity gone to his head? Is he sporting new Sun Glasses, and doing Autograph appearances around town? OR is your mother keeping him more grounded. Certain people let it all go to their heads. As an "influencer" will he be promoting product lines, like push brooms, and so forth? [2] And will your mother be selling "SPECKLE PAINTED" tank tops? I mean get the family empire rolling there. [3] At the end of the season, when we are going to get a cold snap, I literally use the long arm sickle mower on the tractor and mow them all over. Then gather them in bundles to bring into the machine building to get out of the cold, and sort them off a wagon into buckets. They can hold up to a couple weeks in the machine building. [4] Cucamelon also comes in a Red version that is a little sweeter.
