From frozen pizza to Eggo waffles to Trader Joe's, frozen food has taken over the grocery store. But frozen food wasn't always this popular. There was a time when Americans bought only a couple of pounds of frozen food per year. The breakthrough that gave us frozen food was pioneered by Clarence Birdseye. But what started out as frozen peas and fish has grown to an almost $300 billion industry.

I live in indonesia where frozen, prepackaged foods are expensive. And they're only available in grocery stores that are far away from my house. Instead, my fridge is filled with cabbage, raw chicken, beansprouts, eggs, and other cheapest stuff from traditional market. And when i'm hungry, i just stir fry them all on wok with some garlics and instant seasonings. It takes much more effort but feels so fulfilling and satisfying

Would be interesting to see graph or timeline of sales with any inflection points from after introduction of domestic fridges, such as perhaps introduction of fish fingers, TV dinners, ice cream tubs and frozen desserts, frozen pizzas, introduction of the microwave, etc.

Fun video! I knew Birdseye was the innovator in frozen vegetables, didn't know the rest of it. I work for the company that now owns Birds Eye and Hungry Man. My plant produces their varieties of mashed cauliflower, as well as broccoli bakes and potato bakes. Working at a frozen food plant is a boon for an old goat that never did learn how to cook! 😂 Only problem being, during this pandemic fiasco, we're working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! Everybody's stuck at home, can't go to restaurants, having to cook... But, nobody knows how to cook anymore so our frozen food is flying out of the freezer cases! As you might guess, summer is the slow season for frozen food... Not last summer! And we're not expecting any kind of slowdown for next summer!!

@@derekparsons3363 Depending on what it is, I still prefer to get my food non-frozen, especially meat. Frozen meat after some time takes in a lot of water, which can ruin the meat's integrity. I'm indonesian live in west region of java island. My neighborhood has a lot of grocery stores and mini marts nearby where can be reached by just walking, and each always has stocks of frozen and prepacked. Lots of indonesian actually loves to buy packed frozen food since covid hit, and some of the food very cheap while the other might cant affordable to middle and lower class. I assume people who live in a remote area of indonesia have problem access to store and food stocks so the frozen food is so scarce so it is expensive in some area.
