Thank you for this; more Tubers need to share vids of this sort. I don't mean the 'fail', the rainy slop and all that. I mean the obsession over dead trees, the sticks tangled up in tangled line as you you try, and fail, multiple bear line throws, the self doubt, the questioning if one's sanity. These are the realities that plague us all that discourage novice backpackers. These issues are never seen in the usual 'highlight reel' vids, so novices think they are failing because they have these frustrations, problems and doubts.

i failed my first attempted through hike. destroyed my feet and legs and could barely walk on trail and i luckly came across the trail mantainance team in there jeep and i got a ride out. i just did a kayak camping trip and on the second day, most of the primitive campsites were taken up by car campers. the only other sites were cabin sites that you had to reserve which we obviously couldnt do. and also alot of private land with posted signs. so i had to risk it and found a spot with no posted signs cuz i needed somewhere to sleep lol. it was very frustrating but all in all still an amazing time. @outdoor adventures this was the same clarion river trip you did awhile back and i gave it a go. i loved it

It's a bog..... Having worked for FEMA for 5 years I ALWAYS look at the weather when planning camping, hiking or travel. I was in a tent that night at AUDRA State Park I recorded the monsoon rain in my tent which stayed bone dry. West Virginia is so Beautiful... The first was quite because the animals knew what was in store. Good on you for posting this... Life is what happens when we are making other plans.

I grew up in this area. “Dry as a bone” is not a weather condition that you associate with the this part of the state. But it has been a wet summer. For those who hike in the Cranberry wilderness, you should probably put aside the notion of “normal” mileage. Most of the trails are pretty rugged. But the work is worth it. This is a quietly beautiful spot of the world.

You convey information in a concise, logical yet entertaining way, so as not to be so ‘entertaining’ that it’s distracting from your content while not being so dry that your videos are a snooze-fest!!! Outdoor Adventures is that perfect sweet-spot of info-tainment!!

As the old adage goes, crap happens :) Failure is a part of the learning process. Since the age of ten in Ohio I've been solo hiking and camping. At 73 I'm still experiencing minor issues. However, the joy of being a part of nature is constant. You can't have full control of all the elements involved, i.e. weather, gear failure, etc. I have been wanting to go backpacking in Dolly Sods for some time; did the Cranberry Wilderness two years ago. I don't mind my feet getting wet in warm weather but in cold, different story. You just reminded me to wear my rubberized hiking (hunting) boots and not use a tent. Thanks for sharing, Frozen. Be safe.

I think your willingness to show the not so fun times will encourage others to keep at it even after they themselves have a horrible trip. I also love your positive attitude. Thanks for sharing. Good that you show people that hikes don't always go as planned. It has been pretty wet in the central/south part of WV. Kinda reminds me of my first backpacking trip. Same area of West Virginia. It was beautiful the first day and started raining late the second morning and it never stopped. By the end of the third day we had gotten lost ended up in the middle of a swamp and had every gear failure you could think of. By the time we walked out I dont think there was a dry piece of gear among us. It was miserable at the time but I still look back and remember how much fun we had.

Thanks for sharing. Took an Allegheny River Canoe trip during one of those post hurricane rains a couple of years ago. Canoeing Willie Wonka's chocolate river with all the island campsites underwater was quite an adventure. The rain just never let's up. I liked hearing that your pace made the decision not how miserable you were. I on the other hand would bailed just because I was miserable and pissed off losing my shoe all the time (yes, it has happened to me more than once)

I am born and raised West Virginian and spend alot of time in our woods, our seasons have switched a little here in the past decade.. we get what we used to say was spring showers in March and April.. but now it rains like that in June, July and August. Then drys out September through November which is really affecting our Fall tree color. Not having the bright colors we used to have.. so its odd how nature has shifted a bit.

Cold weather backpacking .... when it is necessary to store your battery and sawyer and phone (& whatever else you want to keep warm - maybe shoes and socks) in your bag with you overnight, how do you do that? Just throw them in a stuff sack in the toe box of your bag? I find myself will all sorts of things everywhere in the hammock. As always, enjoyed the video! I’ve been following you since long before the AT. I’m curious how that M50 does in the wet? Do you film the handhelds with it, or is that your phone? I’ve been thinking about getting one, since I’ve been a Canon guy since a long time.

I switched to Evo Loops after you uploaded your first video on them. And I've been using the plastic toggles on my tarp ridgeline for a couple years now. Both products are superb...not to mention much cheaper than Dutchware! p.s.- You spent a night in the woods in your hammock. I wouldn't call that a "failure." ;-)

@@FrozensAdventures They're great! Everything I've ordered from Jeff Myers is top-notch. I picked up one of his dyneema chest pouches a while back, which is also a great piece of kit!

Just a minor edit: this is actually the Fork Mountain Trail, not the North Fork Mountain trail. They are 2 different trails on the MNF. I’m sure a lot of people already picked up on this. The North Fork Mountain trail is more of a out-and -back trail instead of a loop.

Post-holing in the mud - not fun! Glad you got to get out though.

Thanks for sharing! I could see how that slow going, muck, and more rain would make it hard to make your mileage to get back in time. On another note, how did the Multi-day pack do in that rain without a cover? I know you have a pack liner, but does water still get in? I typically only put quilts, clothes, and hammock in my liner is why I ask.

I’ve blown parking a bunch of times...or have been snowed out of access. Sometimes plan B ends up better than the original. Muahhhhh, and that spoogey trail, reminds me of Dolly Sods, doh!! Maybe that trail is better done in February.

You have your straps heading straight into the tree, which is why the clips were destroying the straps. Your strap should head into the tree tangentially, so there's no bend at the clip/loop.
