It must be said: this advice also helps you build a more sustainable wardrobe. Taking things slow, you can strategize future purchases while focusing on quality and versatility over the current trends or what you think is cool NOW. Like Christian said, it’s inevitable that our style will change and evolve along with the rest of ourselves, but it’s our responsibility to be mindful of this fact while we decide if we will pull the trigger on that next unique piece (for our current wardrobe) or not. When it gets down to it, over-commitment leads to an overall waste of time, money, and other resources in this context.

Really felt that “you will never be satisfied” I’m happy with where I am with my style but I’m never satisfied so I’m always buying new, different pieces to add to my wardrobe

Bro I am an older guy who lives in Tokyo where style counts - and you are exactly right - you gotta build your style slowly.

I am a woman and I still take his advice. I used to refuse pink, girly clothes because I thought I was refusing to "be like other girls" by embracing dark clothes and edgier vibe. As I've evolved (both mentally and in fashion) I've come to realize that the mere refusal meant I was limiting myself and my style. Long story short, even doing something "to seem different" is an act in itself. Edit: Also, choose pieces even when you don't think they go with one aesthetic. That whole trend is limiting your wardrobe and stressing you out.

Taken with a grain of salt, no matter how long you've been in the game someone usually not even as old as some of your clothes will come along and say you're trying too hard or old friends who don't check on you will say you've changed too much. Based on their perception and how often they look at you, you may look drastically different one day. My very best fashion advice is wear what you like to please yourself, if you can do that, a small degree of happiness will find it's way to you. Don't nose dive, but when you do find things you like its okay to enjoy them.

I pay attention to trends but I rarely follow them. When I buy it’s usually classic pieces that will stand the rest of time and never go out of style. I also try to shop sustainably. trend hopping can be fun but it can burn you out and burn through your wallet. (Commenting this while purging my closet for the new year). I've DEFINITELY caught this early before I even started to over commit. For instance I've started to like oversized, but it's really easy to realize you don't have enough fit variety. Graphic shirts are cool, but then you realize that you can buy stuff with simple but interesting designs. Anyone can get a graphic tee with an artist that passed, but what about a shirt with a cool design no one's seen before? Basically I caught onto this before I fell into the rabbit hole.

Relatable af. Got into fashion fast and hard. Luckily, I noticed my mistakes pretty quickly and made immediate changes. Now, I never even consider buying something unless it immediately catches my eye and I get that feeling of "I need to have this". And then always make sure I got the basics covered so I can always build off that one piece. One year later, I finally have a functional wardrobe I'm happy with.

I got myself a pair of black boots and that really changed the vibe of my wardrobe, even the combinations I wear the most. I feel like that was the thing that set the tone of my style and now most of the clothing I wear just look extra cool

This is actually really true you gotta go through the process of starting out figuring out what you like and feel good in and developing that to your original developed style

These are actually great tips since I just started being overcommited to my style

Spent my student aid ($2000~) on online thrifting such as depop, poshmark, grailed, ebay. Bartered, bought, and rotated through so many styles. Workwear, Rick, some tech, Hedi, distressed kanye, etc.. Ended up finding Ann D, Red Wings, RRL, and vintage boots as my "true" style, after 2 years or rotating and losing/gaining money through the used markets. Was it worth it? Definitely. I tried on so many things, I hated and loved so many things, I regretted and rejoiced over so many items. At the end, I have a wardrobe I love so much I don't look at the mirror anymore and have to convince myself that "this is me," it just is me, and it was a mixture of everything I tried.

My style transformation timeline: Neon phase (duh) Wannabe edgy scene kid whose parents wouldnt let him be edgy or scene, mostly black, navy, and white Surfer dude type beat with tie dye, lots of light blue, and tan Wannabe eboy, but with colors from my surfer dude phase: black, gray, white, jewelry, blue, tie dye Experimenting with color phase, lots of pastels, yellows, pink, blue, etc. Trying to make color "edgy" by adding more black Realizing that I don't feel confident or comfortable in bright colors and it SHOWS Embrace almost all black and gray Get bored with black and gray Realize I get complimented whenever I wear certain darker shades of colors, especially green Wear browns, blacks, greens, grays, and whites and feeling more comfortable in my style than ever!! This is all to say that when it's said that finding your style is a process, it is a PROCESS. Nothing wrong with jumping around between styles, especially when you pick up parts from each part! I discovered how much I love funky jewelry from my eboy phase, found my comfortable roots from my wannabe scene phase, and found colors that worked best with my vibe from my bright color phase. It gets better! Also, controversial opinion, but trend hopping isn't necessarily a bad thing. Buy that carhartt detroit jacket if you think it would fit with your personal style. Maybe skip the double knees if it's not you. Swap out the dunks or jordans or vans for some combat boots. Make it your own--no shame in it!

I started properly getting into fashion a couple years ago and made some highly questionable buys. A kenzo tiger sweatshirt, a Supreme metallic gold synthetic sweater, and even a Dior belt with a big CD icon - yeesh. I rarely/never wear any of them now (should really onsell)...but they did further a process of exploration and learning, and now I feel much more confident and knowledgeable in my choices, relatively speaking.

What I recommend for buying clothes: Find yourself a triangle of friends or family members whose opinion you value. The three people should be: Friend A: Does it look nice? Friend B: Is it cool? Friend C: Is it unique? If 2 out of 3 friends can agree on the item, get it. If it looks nice and is a cool piece, doesn’t really matter whether it’s super unique. The other way around, if it’s cool and unique, it doesn’t need to be super fancy. Etc. After that, evaluate in another triangle: Do I need the item? Can I afford it? Is there enough room for it in my closet? If you need it and have room for it, you’ll get the money eventually. If you need it and can afford it, you can always make room for it. These two triangles assure me in my buying decisions and prevent myself from buying stuff that I would love to have but just cannot afford while I don’t really need it.

When I started getting into fashion I spend 35 dollars in a techwear jacket on aliexpress. It doesn’t feel like much now but back then I was underage and spent a whole ass year collecting that money. A couple of months later I realized techwear/functional wear and warcore aesthetics were too dark for my taste and didn’t really fit me (especially since it’s always hot where I live in) so I felt guilty for spending so much money on something I didn’t really like and wouldn’t use. I was just copying some german girl I followed on ig. A sold it on marketplace a year later and got the money back lol
