I was fortunate to have flown this legendary aircraft in the US Air Force while in Vietnam as an electronic recon aircraft. MSFS rendition is quite accurate and I applaud the detail the developers included. The sounds are very authentic especially for flaps and landing gear. Someone in an earlier post suggested locking the tail wheel for takeoff, that was absolutely essential in the real aircraft especially for landing and takeoff. I’ve seen seasoned pilots ground loop the aircraft during landing even with tail wheel locked so be careful out there especially in a crosswind.

When you land, keep the tail in the air as long as possible (pussh the yoke forward) to keep rudder authority. That way you can keep the plane in the middle of the runway!

Love the old vintage Sperry autopilot...MSFS version is not really accurate to the real deal..but once you figure out each knob, it does help with long range flying. Many hours in a DC3, and I must say ..like you...one of the best MSFS planes out there. and for sure my fav. New sim pilots are to quick to learn the modern day auto pilots, and that usually means ..it will take them longer to be proficient in flying other planes. I am amazed at how many sim pilots do not know how to navigate TDS. Its old school..but accurate and fun times in the cockpit during flights. Great video..

I'm also flying the DC3 Classic and the sounds (of my plane at least) are awesome, inside and out. In outside views, the sound of the radials is incredibly rich. I've also started navigating with the VOR receiver, tuning a radial and flying to or from the VOR in heading mode. You can easily do long cross country flights without a GPS, just using VORs. I'm also going to try an ILS, there should be no problem getting vertical navigation. Keeping on the glideslope will be the challenge! In short, the DC3 is great for hand flying, but using the AP while sightseeing is as much fun. A note on landings... no one should be discouraged by bad landings in a sim, they are much more difficult than in real life.

Thanks for the video. I find some of the tail draggers in MSFS really hard to get used to - its just me not a reflection on how these are modelled in the game. I'm looking forward to mastering this one eventually or at least not ground looping on every landing. In order to help stop the aircraft dancing across the runway you can lock the tail wheel by sliding the green lever in front of the trim wheel forward. It really helps. Just get into the habit of lining up on the runway and then locking the tail wheel before your take off roll. Keep it locked in flight, and once you've landed and have a stable rollout, you can unlock it again so you can taxi back to the terminal. As for the A310 sounds, they're sooooo off putting, aren't they? I really hope they do something about that. It's a great aircraft but unfortunately I've had to uninstall it for now, as it completely ruins my multiplayer experience. Let's hope they fix it sooner rather than later. There's also a sound bug with the DC3, but you'll only notice it under very specific conditions. A large group of us did a DC3 group flight both last night and the night before, and it seems that if there are around 10ish DC3s flying together, the sounds start chopping and stuttering, totally ruining the experience. I'm fully convinced that the beta testers don't test anything in multiplayer.

Then, right bumper and X to hold altitude and right bumper and B to hold heading. Seems to work rather well with the game pad.

I tried to steer the DC-3 yesterday. I like to opearte it with the real POH. Vr is apr. 100 knots... It is impossible be for me to stay on the ground for that long. Even if i push the yoke FULLY foward the airplane is in the air at about 70 knots.. dont know what im doing wrong here ... Powersettings are checked aswell. Maybe you have to fully fuel and load it up? Or maybe the performance of the sim is not accurat enough? How is your experience with this?
@Huddison

With further practice on the take-off procedure, I throttle up to around 70% and push my yoke full forward to encourage the front wheels to drop. Then I further increase to throttle to 95% (or so) to get to a good take-off speed - seems to work well.

Another helpful video thanks. And yes the DC3 is a bit of a handful to fly and nicely challenging. But I’m confused after watching your video. The functionality of my cockpit seems different, both in the Classic and Retrofit aircraft. For example, with flaps: these operate using a lever on the floor to the right of the pilot's seat. And the notched levers used in your video seem lifeless. Also, I had a lot of difficulty at first finding how to raise the landing gear. My Logitech autopilot lever control for this was non responsive. I discovered that hidden - and only visible with the pilot's armrest raised - was a lever that unlocked the landing gear. Once activated my controls worked ok. Perhaps I’m missing an update or maybe things work different,y with the Logitech set up.

@@Huddison Vmca for the DC-3 is 89 mph, so you wouldn't want to take off at less than about 95 mph or the aircraft would become uncontrollable if one engine failed. Your explanation of the autopilot heading function is poor, because you have assigned knobs to your controller, so we have no idea what control in the aircraft itself you are changing. The heading thing is the only part of the autopilot that's confusing but you don't cover it adequately.
