In this video, we fly the RNAV 24 Y Approach into Bradley International in a Textron Bonanza. Interestingly the vertical/GS information was inaccurate but the landing was still successful.

I might have a nice puzzle for you, Gatcomb! Airport: KGYY ils RW30.... Start North of the airport on a South-easterly course, then capture the localizer, then catch the ils approach runway 30. The ils chart took me some time to figure out, but nailed it with nav 1 and nav 2 at the same time in the cesnna 152 (no glass) ... Thanks for the video's!

Dude.. I also had the same issue as you did. I was way over the glide path despite listening to the ATC's instructions, and I quickly realized that I needed to do something. I then disconnected the autopilot, and followed the glidepath to successfully land.

I agree about the navigation data being inaccurate. It's unfortunate, especially in America, because the FAA has all the instrument procedures for every airport available online, for free.

Hi, I've seen all of your videos, and I'm learning a lot from you. You sir, are a legend, thank you so much for all the time you spend to help us newbies understand how to fly! Could you perhaps also do an IFR video on for example KAST-KPDX in a TBM930, complete from A to Z? So a cold & dark start, explaining the correct departure procedure, ATC communication & airspace analyses, transponder c-mode, the whole shabam. I'd like to make this my study flight that I will do over and over and over again.

Not realizing, that the missed approach altitude is already programmed is one of the reasons for the Asiana 214 disaster. Thank you for the new tutorial!

Could you please explain that in more detail? :)
@HurricaneWeasel
@HurricaneWeasel 3 жыл бұрын
@@Gswp The crew was a bit too high on the approach and had to loose altitude fast. At one time the pilot flying activated the Flight-Level-Change Mode, not realizing the go around altitude was already programmed. The plane was now preparing to climb instead of descending faster. He realized this a few seconds later and deactivated the autopilot. He also reversed the thrust. Sadly this set of events basically deactivated the auto throttle including the stall protection. The crew, thinking the auto throttle will keep the programmed speed, did not realize they have slowed to much, until it was too late for a go around. They initiated the go around about 7 seconds before impact with the seawall. They could barely have made it, initiating the go around about 11 seconds before impact (These are the numbers I remember off my head, but they might not be correct. The accident report is available for free on the NTSB website and it is a very interesting read.)

I really just couldn't get the glidepath fix and would just keep going over the nav points. Essentially the approach mode would never go active to control my decent. After tons of research I found this is a common problem in MSFS2020 especially with the G1000. The issue it turns out is that the glidepath intercept is lower than indicated on the landing plates. Just going a few hundred feet or so (sometimes more) the indicated intercept point I found the glidepath would catch and start to bring me down and everything worked from there. Hope this saves some others the frustration i had after hours of repeated attempts without success. IF YOU DONT CATCH THE GLIDEPATH AND THE PLANE WONT DESCEND ON ITS OWN, INTERCEPT THE GLIDEPATH AT A LOWER ALTIDUDE.

Thanks for the tip! I've been wondering why APPR mode sometimes triggers for me and sometimes doesn't.
@mcdol13
@mcdol13 3 жыл бұрын
@@Tobascodagama I actually continued to have trouble since giving that tip. Switching to ILS approaches I have had consistent success at the altitudes indicated on the approach plates. One thing I learned in doing that is that if you program the approach in the plane and not on the flight planner before the flight, it works better. Essentially, it will insert the approach path into the flight plan (load it don't activate it). This avoids weird loops in the flight path. Also, hitting the APR mode button on the G1000 simply tells the autopilot to use the glideslope/glidepath to control altitude. You don't actually have to ever hit "activate" in the G1000 flight plan, just "load" and then just hit "APR" button before hitting the intercept point. If you have any questions or suggestions from your own experience please let me know!

Really likes your videos. One thing though. How have you mastered the mousey thing. You seen, as by magic, to be able to manipulate the knobs and dials perfectly. Still sitting with my nose in the screen trying to get the right inner/outer knob. Very frustrating. How do you do it?

one thing that helped me was disabling the scroll-wheel mouse zoom by rebinding it. it's way too easy to zoom accidentally when you want to twiddle a knob.

So I tried to do an RNAV into a local airport tonight in the TBM. The FMS had the correct altitudes for the various transition points but the autopilot didn't seem to do any of the altitude changes. Has anyone actually seen FS2020 autopilot properly execute an RNAV approach? Do you have to enable VNAV to get the altitude changes? If so that's completely broken at the moment in most (all?) FS2020 planes, isn't it?
@yienmaster04

As far as I can tell (and this video backs it up), RNAV is broken in MSFS. I have had it take over the glidepath as it should, but it was very very wrong with its altitude. It basically ran me into the ground almost a mile before the runway started. It picked up the glidepath a lot earlier than it did for P Gatcomb, but that doesn't matter if it's wrong. It seems he got the opposite (correct glidepath but didn't pick it up until it was basically too late). Really wish they would fix RNAV. It's not like it's the most common approach type or anything [rolls eyes].

thanks for the vid. I've noticed a disconnect between that baro pressure and true altitude with in the game. Even to the point when I use the in game ATC, the AI voice will announce an altitude different from what the instruments actually say. I think that might be happening with your LNAV... but cool demo anyways. thanks.

Hey Mr. P, anyway you could redo this video and go slower on what you are using and commenting on. I was really getting mixed up there on some of the procedures. I'm old and slow and would really love to use this method, it was very interesting and something I've been look for. I've been using AP with GPS but was have trouble putting together that with the change over with the Glideslope procedure to the runway. Love the videos, just a little too fast for me sometimes.

Microsoft doesn't seem to be loading all that fixes from the approaches into their flight plans. You can select the transition as if it were, but when you go to activate it, you can't actually navigate to it. Small issue if you're "just a flight simmer" kind of a big deal if you're using it as an IFR supplement to stay current,

The RNAV 24 Y got loaded ok. I was even able to add KIBBE as my first fix. The G1K let me change the altitude at KIBBE to 3000. It has the ability to set the altitudes at other fixes along the approach but when you hit enter they don't load. The AP was in approach mode with GS indicating, but it didn't pick up the GS until 2.2 miles from touchdown. I would at least expect it to capture at FAF. What is the deal? I will try different airports but I really don't think RNAV approaches are working yet.

Too bad that many (most?) RNAV runways don't work with vertical nav and you never capture the glide slope at all. The 'pink diamond' just sits pegged on the bottom the whole way down and doesn't work. I guess it's bad nav data on a ton of runways. Disappointing. It's just trial and error until you find a RNAV runway where the glide slope works correctly like it does with ILS and LOC.
@BernardLangham
@BernardLangham 3 жыл бұрын
i've also had the AP start an RNAV descent at what appears to be the correct 3 degree glide-slope, until you realize it started way too early and is going to lawn dart you long before the runway threshold.

@@Mamo878 i'm now wondering if some (or all) of the RNAV height values for the approach are just plain and simply zero, which would explain the glideslope always appearing to be below the plane. i guess i should check that before i fly one again :D
