To the people whining about this video using the word 'budget', give it a rest. Go price some commercial lighting and see what your budget looks like. I commend F-Stoppers for showing us how to get a real professional look for literally a fraction of commercial lighting costs. If you want to take it a step farther (sorry F-Stoppers) you could look for used gear for the flashes. But get real: the knowledge they gave you in terms of where to set the lighting was worth money but you didn't pay a cent to watch this video. You have to take that into account also. Kudos to F-Stoppers for the *free* video and knowledge given out. Some of us appreciate it.

some people never checked pricing on broncolor or profoto. And I am sure even they are cheap, compared to some really exotic stuff out there.

What the hell do people want for nothing? This advice is absolutely golden and the price of the flash discs is so worth it. In fact, just watching this tutorial has paid for your flash discs in knowledge. Hats off to F-Stoppers for empowering the community with easy to follow, inspiring tutorials...FREE tutorials.

People that are complaining that this video isn't on a budget wanted DIY stuff using fire and sticks. This video is about showing that you don't have to buy professional gear/lights to produce a good beauty image that will get you jobs. This is for people looking to take photography seriously, with goals of making it a paying job. As such, it requires some investment into the tools. Would you hire an iPhone photographer for a million dollar budget, who has never touched a real camera or lens? This video is meant to get you started lighting so that you can start getting clients. This eventually leads to better jobs that will require better gear as you grow. You can't expect to get something for absolutely nothing. You don't have to buy the gear that he suggested. It is the theory behind the lighting that is most important. If you have a cheap flash that has good power then you can use it with some diffusion material in front. The key is that you need to soften up the small light source. You can try whatever DIY diffusion that your mind or google can come up with. But you need at least the light sources, diffusion, light stands, and reflectors. As a serious photographer you should have those things if you want to do studio setups. What do you think? That the light of god will magically light up your studio?? Well, anyway, this video was well done. It shows you the reason/theory for each light. You get to see the effect that each light has on the image. He shows you what happens to the light when you move it or when you add a modifier to it. This is a great video to learn lighting, as well as the other videos they have up.

Estimated prices: Nikon D800 $2500 Nikkor 70-200 F2.8 VR2 $2000 Nikon SB800 (used) $250 Nikon SB80dx $75 Yong Nuo 560 III $80 3 stands + 1 boom arm $150 Reflector $30 3 ring flash difusers $150 I'm not even going to count the studio space and white backdrop since most people can find a white wall and move around furniture and what not... Estimated total price of this beauty photography "on a budget" = $5,235 I didn't count flash triggers, but since he's using the Yong Nuo as the main light, you could just use the Yong Nuo RF 603's (about $40) and slave the rest. However, this is still over my budget :(
@phaskellhall
@phaskellhall 9 жыл бұрын
I'm not saying it's cheap but most published beauty images are shot on a medium format camera costing > $40,000 with a single light and beauty dish costing at least $3000. Budget is a relative term but by most standards this is cheap compared to the alternative

musashi06 i agree with "on a budget" is bs, however you can drop your price down by buying the body and lens, light stands and reflector used.
@TalesOfWar
@TalesOfWar 8 жыл бұрын
+Yi Fan Chin Indeed. All you need beyond the camera is a few flashes (like the Yongnuo's you mentioned, which are cheap as chips and great for the price) and some light stands. Oh and a reflector, which is cheap as hell anyway but you can always use a windscreen sun reflector for the exact same purpose and they cost a few quid/bucks/whatever your local currency is. Hell you could do it with some table lamps and daylight bulbs and some heat proof baking paper stuff to act as a diffuser over said lamps. The better gear just gives you more refined control and convenience.

@TalesOfWar

+Biliana BiBiShi BiBiShaN You can get light stands for like $15-20 a piece on Amazon. They won't be the strongest things ever, but they should be more than good enough for holding a speedlite. You can get pretty cheap boom arms too for attaching the top front light. Have something you can use as a counterweight though top stop it tipping over lol. Cheaper stands tend not to be so sturdy for that stuff. You can get a tripod for around $30 too, though I'd never trust something so cheap unless you happen to get a mega awesome deal on something that was far more expensive but on sale. Photography isn't a cheap hobby/profession, but you can do a lot of DIY stuff or get away with cheaper gear if you're not going to be moving it around much or you're doing it purely for fun. You'd want to get some more expensive better quality kit though if you plan on making money from it. At least in terms of say a tripod. It depends what you're shooting I guess. Renting is a good way to go too if you're just starting out. Just be sure to rent it before the day so you know how to use it properly lol, last thing you want is to show up with a new lens or body you just rented at say a wedding and not know how to actually use it properly because you picked it up that morning.

They can rim an entire person if you put the flash far enough away but at some point the light will begin to look hard again. For a soft rim you really need a full length strip box.

That's the difference between a giant company selling literally millions of units and a small company with 2 guys trying to do everything for the first time without any sort of distribution. We will do what we can to keep our prices competitive but at the moment our expenses are extremely high.

Fstoppers Fans Actually I don't think it is that overpriced. It is very close to the Rogue Flashbender which is priced at $39 on Amazon. I own the Flashbender and I like it. But I also like the idea of a foldable flat soft box. If you guys can bring the price down to $39 then it would be great, but I don't think it is that overpriced as it is now. I just hope it is a high quality and reliable product.

***** Dude, I bought the wedding DVD. It is worth every penny. It is 14 hours of material. Compare that to taking a course with 14 times 1 hour lectures and you will be probably paying more. Plus, the content is really good and you can see that they actually thought about what to put in there and have a comprehensive training package. If you are going to be professional you will be spending more than that amount on any flash, camera, or lens you buy. Not to mention advertising. So why are you thinking those DVDs are less important? People should really try to appreciate quality and quit the pirate mentality.
@Samtagri
@Samtagri 9 жыл бұрын
***** Well, advising people to watch but not buy the DVD's is something I am strongly against. This is not a big Hollywood corporate production. This is an educational course created by two young photographers on their own time and expense. They clearly spent a lot of time making and polishing it. If no one buys it then there will be no incentive for similar material to be created. That would be quite sad. Lee teaches you how to shoot in his style. And he says many times that there are many other ways to doing things, but that's his way. Also, I find it unfounded to degrade his style. Looking at your website, I don't think your style is particularly different or superior. Maybe you think differently, but I doubt you will find many that agree with you. I personally find DVDs superior to attending a lecture and having someone yap at you for 14 hours. You can pause at any moment, pick up your camera, try it out, rewind to see what you did wrong, do it again and again till you get it right. You can watch the whole thing a year later with fresh eyes and learn things that went over your head when you were just starting. You basically have it forever. How many times do you use lecture notes? And of course it is aimed at beginner photographers. What would a professional high end photographer want with an educational DVD? I don't get your point. Also don't get the point about the 12K and photo albums. Anyway, just don't say things like "I recommend others to watch it - but not to buy". That's a quite terrible thing to advise people to do. Let's all be nice and fair to each other, OK?

Mastery of lighting techniques is probably more important than having the latest more expensive camera/lens. Knowing how to use lighting effectively is the key to outstanding photography, not having the latest camera. Often that differentiate between a professionsl, an amateur and a beginner photographer.

I'd say, this is definitely a budget. The video doesn't say "cheapest", just "budget". There are a ton of WAYYYYY more expensive ways to achieve this type of lighting. This is definitely a budget friendly way as opposed to getting a 7' Profoto umbrella or a Broncolor 7' umbrealla. For the price of 1 of those umbrellas you could buy this setup 6x.

@phaskellhall
@phaskellhall 9 жыл бұрын
Maybe, it's all about positioning. If you have a strip that spans her shoulders, it still has to be up high to be out of the frame and therefore will throw light down. Her shoulders will get most of the light while her jawline will get very little. It is possible but usually you want to separate light sources behind and on either side. If you don't mind blowing out the background, you can simply overexpose the background light a little so it bleeds on the the jawline but it could also flare the lens.
