One of the clearest explanations of dead reckoning I've seen. Not just useful for flight simulators, this is a great ground school explanation for anyone working towards a pilot's licence.

You kind of want to add that TAS is the same as GS when there is zero wind. You can also use TT/course which in your example is 120* - WC which was 90* = 30* Sin=crosswind, think of sin=side cos=headwind, think of cos=nose sin(30)*15 -> (1/2)*15=7.5kt. so you have 7.5kt crosswind. cos(30)*15=13kt TAS-13kt -> 106kt-13kt=93kt which is our GS. Some good in air calculation, which is often used in IFR that could be good to know is. TOD(Top Of Descent) = (height/1000)x3 for example (6000/1000)*3=18nm. This mean you're going to start your descent 18nm from the airport on a 3 degree glidepath. ROD(Rate of Descent) what you're VSI should be at: GSx5 (only works on slower aircrafts). Example GS:100kt -> 100*5=500ft/min, then you should hold a 500ft/min descent. Time to "touch down", Height/ROD in this case 6000/500=12min. From this you know when you're going to start your descent, what you're VSI is going to show and how much time it will take before you land. You also got Standard rate of turn= TAS/10 + 5 for example 120/10 +5=17*, but you usually have a turn and bank indicator. Good video, not really sure how i got here but i thought i would give some tips. :P

+Arcadiez Wow those are some very useful calculations to have, thanks for commenting! I'll definitely try using those next time I fly. Before now it's just been guess work lol

By the way, Dead Reckoning is the coolest thing to do! When I was learing, I focus on how to flight using NDB, VOR, VOR/DME, and all IFR stuffs! A couple of years I realised Dead Reackoning was the real chalenge, specially if you are simulating/flying with winds. Thanks for the vid!

If your GPS / avionics fail for any reason, DR is one of the most important skills to "get you home". In the very early 1970's, DR and a hand-held radio direction finder were pretty important things to know / have!

Doofer911: There is an error with the formula you introduced for computing TAS that is, TAS = (IAS) + (.02 X MSL / 1000). If we compute that with the 100 IAS and 3000 MSL, it will yield 100.06 Knots TAS. The correct formula should be, TAS = (IAS) + (.02 X MSL / 1000 x IAS). TAS = 106 Knots.

Another great video. How does one allow for the time taken from takeoff to reach 100KT IAS and 3000 FT, or can this be effectively disregarded in a flight of moderate duration? I guess there are many things that can go awry (flying VFR, encountering IMC conditions, changing wind speed/direction, coming out of cloud and finding that you are not over EGPE but some Russian nuclear research establishment). Maybe you can make another video outlining what to do!

Navigation 101 for all student pilots working on getting their pilot certificate. Regardless of sat tech, pilots still have to learn to navigate the good ol'fashioned way. One thing to note though, is that magnetic variation needs to be taken into account in order to be on a corrected magnetic heading. Depending on where on the globe you are flying, the difference between true north and magnetic north (what your flight instruments indicate) could be different by well over 10 degrees.

Hi, student pilot about to do my check ride. Aside from gathering winds from the nearest reporting station, whats the best way to obtain wind direction and velocity? Maintain IAS and make a 360 turn and note the indicated speeds? Thanks!

+silo granz Get a CRP5 instead. It's very easy when you want to convert stuff and calcualated your Groundspeed, wind correction angle and heading. It can be a pain in the ass to learn it, but when you get the hang of it, it takes seconds to calculated stuff. :)

@Doofer911
@Doofer911 8 жыл бұрын
+King Lim Pang It will but this is a very basic look at Dead Reckoning. Thought that it might be too complicated if I try to account for wind changes as well. All of these tutorials are a very basic look, aimed at people who might be brand new to flight simulation.

How do you get the amount of degrees for a course?
@Doofer911
@Doofer911 6 жыл бұрын
I think you would measure it using a Compass and a Map, alternatively if you're using a flight planner, this will tell you the Course once the plan has been generated.
