I’ve had a number of requests to shoot a video series about the Yaesu FT-710 AESS, similar to my FTdx10 series. Ham Radio Outlet loaned me a Yaesu FT-710 AESS for just that purpose.
In this video I compare the DNF (Digital Notch Filter) in the FT-710 AESS to the DNF in the FTdx10. You might be surprised.

Yaesu radios and beer from the Yaesu district of Tokyo are both great. I've tried mixing the two super heterodyne style but the result was just noise and splatter;) Thanks for the video Doug. Always helpful and informative.

Had to switch to my headset to listen to the difference, not sure what you are using to record audio, but at 7:58 I heard what sounded like a UPS truck in the background leaving your area, I thought it was in my driveway and went and checked. Came back rewind a bit and heard it again. Amazing auto quality from whatever you are using for a mic. The Video is good too and helping me decide on what radio to get. 73 W1GET.

I’m using an iPhone for the radio videos. Always have. But, when I listen back, it sounds exactly like what I heard in the room when I filmed. If I was making the choice, it would be FTdx10, without a second thought.

Either the 710 or the dx10 would be a great choice. I favor the FTdx10. The FT-710 is something akin to an FTdx10 light. For portable ops the 710 is a good choice. It’s an SDR, thus it is a power miser. But the hybrid architecture of the FTdx10 still bests the 710. Not by much, but enough. Plus the dx10 has the better DNR. The 710 has the better DNF. Do you have a NB comparison planned? Nice to know the 710 DNF is better. Hopefully the NB is also, as I found the 10's NB added distortion more than I liked. Thanx for the vid. 👍
@n4hnhradio
@n4hnhradio Жыл бұрын
Distortion from a noise blanker is fairly common. One of my favorite transceivers has a NB that makes people sound like they are gargling. That is the FT-891. It gets really bad at settings above 3. That doesn’t prevent me from liking the FT-891. It is a great transceiver otherwise. I like it so much that I bought two, one for my truck and another for my go-bag. The FTdx10 has a slightly better NB than the FT-891. No NB is perfect. The traditional IF noise blankers adversely affected selectivity. Some could blank the noise out quite well, with little to no distortion, compared to the DSP based noise blankers of late. But, the traditional noise blankers would allow a station 6kHz away to sound like they were splattering wide. But, it was actually the noise blanker allowing the other signal into the passband. To answer, your question, the FT-710 NB will be featured in a future video. I’ve already shot most of the videos. I only have the loaner FT-710 until late December. But I’m only releasing one video per week, at the request of the Patreon support team. The Patreon team members received early inside information from me about the FT-710 and 95% of them expressed no interest in the FT-710. 73, de N4HNH

Everyone hears differently/have different reactions to sound, and every QTH is different. No absolutes. My IC7610's NB is quite good and NB2A on the TS-890 is almost as good. Distortion levels are acceptable enough that I can leave the NB on most of the time to take care of the ticks I have at my QTH. I could not do that with my FTdx-10 even after messing with the 3 settings. Looking forward to your future vids. 73

I wonder if the new ft710 has low audio output to an external speaker as I found the ft991a has. You really have to turn up the volume but then at about 2 o'clock the distortion start on the 991 and 991a which is frustrating

My own conclusions, I think the lack of roofing filters seems to make DNF do what it is supposed to. I certainly notice an improvement when listening to QSO's where one party is very faint. It seems to improve the voice to noise ratio. I just think the roofing filters already do that on sets that have it.
@n4hnhradio
@n4hnhradio 4 ай бұрын
The roofing filter can assist the DSP with selectivity and minimizing noise before the A/D conversion happens. The distortion is coming from the IF DSP algorithm for DNF. My 1998 FT-920 has AF DSP. The DNF works perfectly with no distortion. My Timewave DSP 59+ has the best auto-notch algorithm ever.

Weird how obvious the heterodyne suppression difference was online here like you noted. I could tell instantly that the dx10 was better at that point in the vid.

It’s just that the DNF in the FTdx10 introduces distortion. But the manual notch filter does a better job anyway, especially after I go into the menu and set it to narrow.

I am looking forward to this video. I trust your opinion! This is the one major concern I have between the FT-710 and FTDX10. I can not get an answer too if the DNR setting seems to be like 991a and the receive audio is almost unreadable on some settings - It sounds like someone is trying to talk underwater. Between the two radios I would like to know if the DNR is smooth with no wobble or underwater artifacts? I have hearing loss and wear hearing aides. I can hear this DNR issue on my FT-991a with or without my hearing aides - and it is bothersome. I wish your video would premiere before November 1st because on the FTDX10 HRO’s sale of $200 off for Fall Savings Event! (Exp:10/31/22). Thank you in advance for your time, and 73, Gary AB4GH

Hi Doug, I have been wanting to get the fTDX10 for a while now after watching a lot of your videos. I ended up buying a FT-991A about a month ago because I was only going to have one radio for a while. I was looking at black Friday sales on the DX10 but now I am seeing the 710 $600.00 cheaper. I haven't really watched to much on the FT-710 videos but I know when they came out they were priced pretty close. I still believe you are saying the FTdx10 is a better radio, but with the $600.00 price difference, is the FTdx10 still the one to go with? Thanks, Jim

The FTdx10 is the superior radio. But the FT-710 pretty much beats all other competitors, except the FTdx101D/MP. If you don’t work AM, don’t need to decode CW, and can tolerate slightly less DNR capability, the FT-710 is fine. It does well on TX and receives CW like a boss. You have to wonder why Yaesu is willing to make so little profit from the FT-710 right now. Maybe just to convert some IC-7300 owners? They don’t stay in business from radio profit though. They hope that you will pay $670 for their M-1 microphone. Buy the M-70. It’s around $150 and sounds as good as the M-1, when set up according to video #4 in my FTdx10 series or video #13 in my FT-710 AESS series. Use the savings to buy a good antenna.

Good choice. The FTdx10 doesn’t have a peak-reading watt meter and the DNF introduces some distortion when used. Those are its main flaws. There is no perfect radio. I use a calibrated, peak-reading, external watt meter so I don’t care that the FTdx10 doesn’t read peak-envelope-power. I use manual notch. I can live without DNF. So, in the area that matters most to me, selectivity and sensitivity, the FTdx10 wins.

Manual IF Notch is an *IF* notch. I believe the DNF acts on the audio chain. Just going off the 101d here. DNF that says it will mute multiple hetrodynes at the same time. Haven't tried that. I have another radio, maybe it's the IC-7410, that's like this. The manual IF notch scrapes it out of the passband and your AGC keeps the gain up. The auto-notch on that one only works on the audio chain so although you may be able to mute the tone, if it's strong enough, the AGC will knock back your RXer so far you can't hear anything anyway. lol So I always used the manual notch on that one.
@n4hnhradio
@n4hnhradio Жыл бұрын
These transceivers have a Digital Notch Filter. It is managed in the digital realm. The FT-710 has no choice but use a Digital Notch Filter because it has no IF. It is a pure SDR.
@piquat1
@piquat1 Жыл бұрын
@@n4hnhradio Yes, but the manual notch filter works on the IF section, before that. They even call it an IF Notch filter in the manual. You should see that same difference although I've never tested it. Another advantage of a hybrid RX, you're not gobbling up everything.
@n4hnhradio
@n4hnhradio Жыл бұрын
The SDR has no IF. Yaesu calls it IF Notch but the Notch and even IF bandwidth are handled in the digital realm, before the digital to analog conversion. I think Yaesu just calls it that because the functionality mimics an IF notch. I could be wrong, but judging by the block diagram, that appears to be the case.
@piquat1
@piquat1 Жыл бұрын
@@n4hnhradio The 101 and the 10 are a hybrid design. Yaesu calls it an IF Notch because it has an IF and that notch filter happens in said IF. Are you referring to the 710? I'm talking about the 10 or the 101 or by proxy a lot of radios that have a actual IF. Hybrid design or otherwise. An IF notch and a DSP notch or other types of notch filters that act on the audio stage and not the IF, are two different things.
@n4hnhradio
@n4hnhradio Жыл бұрын
Yes, I already know all that. Been teaching it on the channel since those radios were introduced. The entire DSP system is called IF DSP, though it operates in the digital domain, before the D/A converter, as shown in the receiver block diagram.

I'm trying to figure out if I need to buy a ft710 even though I already own a ftdx10 as well as an ic7300!!! I just like to have backups I guess and new technology but why do I feel the need to buy one of these ft 710???
@n4hnhradio
@n4hnhradio Жыл бұрын
If I was in the market for a backup, I would buy another FTdx10. While the FT-710 ranks as the best pure SDR in Rob Sherwood’s list, it doesn’t beat its big brother, the FTdx10, especially when you utilize the DSP of the FTdx10 (except for DNF). The physical roofing filters in the FTdx10 also help perform some heavy lifting ahead of the SDR stage and the DSP, so they have less noise and interference to deal with. And the FT-710 doesn’t include a CW decode function, in case that interests you. One of my Patreon team members bought a pair of FTdx10s, one for base station and the other for his RV/POTA operations. His reasoning was that he wouldn’t need to bother with remembering two different menu and knob/button arrangements. He keeps both at the same firmware level too. So, I would only purchase a FT-710 for one of two reasons. I just can’t afford the extra for the FTdx10, or I just like to collect new radios. 73, de N4HNH

@@n4hnhradio Good point but maybe it would be a good backup to replace my IC 7300 maybe it's a better radio than the 7300 is especially especially where it has stepped attenuation where the 7300 does not and also has Monitor output connection which the icon 7300 does not have And maybe better digital noise reduction than the 7300 So maybe I'm thinking get rid of my 7300 and replace it with the new FT710 what do you think about that 1 ?

Right now there is a $600 difference between these radios on HRO. Is the DX10 worth $600 more than the 710? I really wanted decode but heard its not great on any radio, and can use decode with the 710 plugged in on the PC anyway. I like the dials and buttons on the 710. Screen size is fine on the 710. Is the hybrid worth it? Older tech but is there an advantage? $600 can be used to buy a a nice UHF/VHF, but I want to buy once and not have to buy another HF. Not made of money, so there needs to be a reason to pay $600 more; willing to do it but need convincing.
@n4hnhradio
@n4hnhradio 9 ай бұрын
I don’t work for Yaesu. I won’t convince you. Just do your research. There are flaws in every radio. The decoder works fine in the FTdx10 radio, once you know how to use it. I show that in the series I produced for the FTdx10. The FT-710 has issues operating AM. There are other differences I cover in the FT-710 series. Some of my analyses are only available to Patreon team members. A hybrid will usually beat a pure SDR on receive, if the operator has mastered how to operate the hybrid. The roofing filters provide an advantage. There is skill involved in doing radio right. The radio is a tool. You must strive to master it like you would any other tool.

@n4hnhradio As there are several other radios I would like to buy, I couldn't justify the extra $600 for the DX10 and went with the 710. Loving the radio. Yes, it would be nice if I could change some of the filtering without going into the menu, but not $600 nice and if they drop the price of the 991a for Black Friday enough I'll be glad to put that money towards another radio. With a home made 16ft dipole I have been able to reach around the world, even in poor conditions. The only thing I need is my General/Amature Extra as I'm looking at this radio and saying "$1000 for only being able to use 0.300 worth of frequencies which I can legally transmit on is a but of a waste. It's good motivation though and been a lot of fun. Yesterday I reached a 747 pilot on a HF technician frequency who cq's as he flies around the country. Was at 40,000ft on the other side of the country. ; ) I just need to learn how to use the radio better. Maybe then I'll regret the 710 over the dx10 but as of now I love the 710 , it's been working wonders on a trash random wire dipole, I like the lower RX/idle power draw vs the dx10, which will come in handy for POTA when on battery, and the screen is far frol small so I dont notice the difference; it's hooked up to a monitor w/ a mouse anyway. Anyone on the fence do the research but I'm happy the 710 and have zero regrets not getting the DX10; given I'm still in my return period I could swap it out but am keeping it. Your milage may very but I'm happy with the unit. Again, thanks for the video.
