Schwartz & Shapiro are the most commonly recognized Jewish names, but Cohen & Levine (which was also my Grandmother's maiden name before she married my Grandfather) is also part of my family name; are also VERY common Jewish surnames. Funny thing about Jewish names: so "Schaeffer" is actually my family's "Ellis Island" anglicized name. It's actually "Sphaznikov" but they couldn't pronounce the Russian surname when my Grandfather came to NYC from Moscow.

Many American Jews are not particularly religious and may even be atheists or Buddhists, but they are ethnically and culturally Jewish if they have Jewish parents. Some consider themselves Jewish (or half-) if either parent is Jewish, but orthodox Judaism only considers you a Jew if your mother was, or if you formally convert.

Again, one can Only be Jewish through their Mother being Jewish. It cannot be inherited through their father. But if their mother was Jewish and their father was not, they would Still be Jewish. The ones you mention above whose father was Jewish does not make them Jewish unfortunately. Only through the mother!

From Wikipedia: All Jewish religious movements agree that a person may be a Jew either by birth or through conversion. According to halakha, a Jew by birth must be born to a Jewish mother. In Judaism, matrilineality or matrilineal descent is the tracing of Jewish descent through the maternal line. According to traditional halakha, Jewish descent is matrilineal: the child of a Jewish mother is automatically Jewish, while the child of a non-Jewish mother is non-Jewish unless they have converted to Judaism.[1]

One is ONLY Jewish if their mother is Jewish. And her mother and so on. Even if one decides to convert OUT of the religion, per Halacha (Jewish law), you are STILL Jewish. It doesn't matter who or how knew was raised, or how Jewish one "feels", the Halachas are the laws, for thousands of years, and what makes us all part of the covenant of Abraham.

According to strict (Orthodox) Jewish law, one is a Jew only if one's mother and ancestors in the maternal line are Jews, or else if one is a formal convert. Having a Jewish father does not make one a Jew if one's mother is not a Jew.

Yup. Jews get the mother's Judaism. Islam & Hinduism it's according to the father. Formal conversion guided by a rabbi is the only other way to be recognized as Jewish by all other Jews. Examples of conversion are Sammy Davis, Jr. and Elizabeth Taylor among well known people. I read Wyatt Earp also converted.

I do not think it is the religion that is important as being Jewish, it is the life experience that matters. My husband's family was Jewish in Dortmund in the early 1900, they had a business until the day of the burning of the Synagoge and persecution of Jews, they moved East to Poland, well wrong move considering what followed. Jews were persecuted by the Nazi regime and later in 1967 anybody with a Ashkenazy surname was persecuted by the Polish communist regime, regardless if you identified as Jewish or not.

Although personally I believe that people have the right to identify as whatever they wish and follow which ever faith They choose, technically, at least according to your facts, Mars is not Jewish. You said that Bruno Mars father is Jewish therefore making Bruno Jewish. According to Judaism that is not true, according to Judaism it goes to the mother so if his mother is not Jewish and his father is then he is not Jewish. Thank you for saying what I was going to say. It does matter which side is Jewish if you want to attend a Temple. My father was a Russian Jew and when I went to a Temple, I was told that if I wanted to join, I would have to take all of the same conversion courses that a non-Jew would have to take, because my mother was not Jewish, which made me not Jewish in their eyes.
