In factory automation, compressed air is the most expensive form of energy. Energy management in accordance with DIN EN ISO 50001 is therefore playing an increasingly important role.
In order to save costs you have to ensure that leaks are detected as quickly as possible.
With the FTMg thermal flow sensor and the PAC50 Leakage Tester (LT) pressure sensor, SICK has the perfect solutions to this problem.
How this works in detail is illustrated in this video by using a compressed air exhibit.

How does it differentiate leaks from real air usage? What I understand a sensor on each air consumer is important, so it can tally all the "legit" consumers and compare it to the air output of the compressor, any difference would then be a leak. Another method of detecting a leak is under the circumstance where all air consumers are in a state of not consuming air. Then leakage can be detected by any pressure drop. But this would require some signalling via NO contacts in series, so only when all machines signal "Im not consuming air for now", the system knows it can measure for pressure drops.

Hello Sebastian Nielsen, With the FTMg, integrated data monitoring allows conclusions to be drawn about leaks, which means that leaks in pneumatic systems can be detected at an early stage. With the PAC50 Leakage Tester, leaks become apparent through a pressure drop in a self containded area over a specified period of time. @@SICKSensors yes but a pressure drop would of course happen when a air consumer "legally" consumes air too. So in some way the system must know when the pressure drop is expected or not right?

To perform the leakage test function of the PAC50LT, the system must be at a standstill. By setting 2 (pressure) threshold values p1 and p2, as well as a desired duration of the measurement, it can be checked whether a self contained compressed air system has a leak. With the help of the integrated data monitoring, the FTMg allows conclusions to be drawn about leakages in the running process. There are several possibilities for this: E.g. assuming that a machine continuously produces the same product and makes the same motion sequences, the compressed air consumption should also be the same. Thus, by comparing a machine's past/historical compressed air history with its current compressed air consumption, leakage can be inferred. Without leakage, the historical compressed air consumption would have to be identical to the current compressed air consumption. If an offset can be seen, this may be an indication of leakage or wear. Similarly, the consumptions of two identical machines can be compared. If there are no leaks, they should have approximately the same compressed air consumption.
