Well done Vera for working out that the feed pipes to the bottles hold 10ml on fuel, therefore the bottle reading was 10ml too high. A word of advice Christian: My wife Valerie is also very clever when it comes to these observations. I have now learned to reply to her “I know that and I was just waiting for you to have noticed it too!” Unfortunately, I have used this excuse so many times now that Valerie doesn’t believe me any more. Unfortunately for me also, she is also correct on this observation!

Love the videos, great to see and hear a German perspective on a Land Rover. ! First, the Discovery 3 poor start, in my humble experience, most of Disco 3 cold start issues are down to two things. 1, the fuel heater and 2, the heater plugs!! Mine a 2005 Disco 3 TDV6 with just over 200,000 miles has NEVER missed a beat, but it only has 3 working heater plugs or glow plugs🙁 I have found that using the heater plugs at least 3 times in really cold, we were down to -12 degrees this year, the Disco has never failed to start! When the car was still under warranty we were told that the heater plugs had failed. Strangely enough I could not book the vehicle in before the warranty expired so we would have to pay for the repair! Go figure! But here we are several years later and still running fine. Have Faith, our British engineering built the modern world. We might moan but we still carry on working and we won’t let you down! Plus with regards to the end of the video, the steering wheel fitted was not a L/R product, but an aftermarket one, as we say in English garages, with vehicles, the biggest problem is the nut that holds the steering wheel !!!

Another great video with Vera saving the day lol. Very interesting to watch and I love listening to the bickering. I recently cleaned the MAP sensor on mine ( they get clogged up with oil and carbon very quickley) and gained 3 MPG and slightly smoother tickover. I would suggest this is done every 6 months or 6000 miles.thinking about trying to import a catch can from Australia to help reduce the oil/carbon build up in the induction/egr system. These videos on this car are so useful for tracking down fuel issues. I’m doing the same thing after getting low fuel rail pressure fault but I suspect the HPFP like the final outcome on this one too.

This is my favourite Landy youtube channel by far. Christian is a fantastic engineer, his skills just blow me away. And Vera's learning all the time, so she's not just a pretty face. If you Guys fancy moving to the UK the house next door to me is up for sale, it would be fantastic if you were my next door neighbours. I was thinking that Christian could fix my P38, Vera could record it all, and I could make us all a nice Cuppa Tea. Don't be put off of moving here because of the English weather, Its not rained here for at least 17 minutes.

I had a D3 TDV6 and my wife the D4 SDV6. Also sometimes difficult starting can be due to glow plugs or battery age/condition.

Great video again. Great to see a defender at yours. Recently did replace my steering linkage because of excessive play in the universal joints. The part was €60 and easy enough to do. Enjoy your venison

A good idea is to tie a piece of cotton to those small clips when refitting so if they do ping off you don’t lose them

Excellent video again. Great to see investigational work going on rather than just replacement of parts in the hope that it fixes stuff. At least you now know that the injectors are ok so I assume it could be a fuel pump or delivery issue? On my D2 it was the injector seals as well as a faulty pump. Hi i would definitely check glow plugs for bad start and rough running at cold very common have lots off them on costumers discos not a bad job but get engine warm before starting job they come out without snapping them just a tip keep up the good videos 😁

Nice work. If cold start and running is the issue, I would investigate glow plugs.

The like 👍 button isn’t enough. Another fantastic video along with another thing I won’t be trying myself 😂. My D3 doesn’t like starting in the colder weather. Battery is suffering from the vehicle not being run enough.

The working glow plug is extremely important for this engine to run smoothly in the cold, it doesn't matter what the temperature is outside I know, i owning a D3 in 2005, 391,000 km. This car has been with me for 11 years.

I had one of those leak off pipes fail on the highway. There was a cloud of diesel behind me. No fire or deaths fortunately! Those tiny clips are a nightmare. Definitely order spares before disconnecting the injectors

Hi Guys, very nice and funny video ( i loved the Aussy mode). I'm pretty sure that cylinder balancing could be tested via digital diagnostic tool (iidTool does it). Yours has been the "analogical diagnose" :-)) For rougher cold starts you could investigate glow plugs first (amps clamp should be fine to check glow plugs current drain just before a cold start), in warm conditions you can fool the intake temperature sensor using some resistors in order to force the car to "feel" a cold climate and set on the glow plugs (Robbie's guide to glow plug diagnostic explain that very well). Hope you solve the problem quickly! Now have to wait until next sunday to know more about it :-))) Cheers

Hiya , brilliant and very informative as always , funny enough done the offset values using the gap iid on my D3 , what were they on this disco please , , have read u can also do them with an oscilloscope, some years ago on my 2002 freelander TD4 done a leak back test , hope it was ok to also share this video on the discovery 3 forum, think I’ve shared 3 or 4 of them on there so hopefully your get some more subscribers and likes as there so well made full of great technical information , but of course Vera brings it all together with her fantastic filming/ editing , lol, thanks again and as always look forward to the next one , enjoy the summer and stay safe ,

I'm so glad I didn't buy a D3. Every new vid you make reminds me I made the correct choice. Anyway I don't know anything about D3 fuel systems but on my TD6 RR it gets bad starting when the secondary fuel pump starts to fail. I've had to replace it twice in five years. I don't have experience with diesel Disco as I own a petrol one, but my diesel Nissan with Denso common rail fuel system had similar issues around 200k that were caused by the fuel pressure regulating valve located on a high-pressure pump. The part was ~$70, but a bit tricky to replace, no issues since then.

Great video. British/Australian mode had me chuckling. I don't suppose you would know if the Discovery 3 or 4 front seats would fit into Freelander 1? I'm thinking of changing mine and the ones in your Discovery look very comfortable.

Hi Christian, just a quick thought about poor starting and initial rough running. I haven't done much work on an LR3 but have done lots on Disco 1 & 2 diesels and their Defender equivalents. On all engine starts (hot or cold) the glow plug circuitry is activated, the glow plugs heat up the cylinders and the engine fires up; a lesser known aspect is that even after engine starts turning and ticking over, the glow plugs will continue to work for up to 30 seconds AFTER the engine has started, to help with initial tick-over. So MAYBE there is an issue with the glow plug circuitry/relay/glow plugs ?

Super video. I did this job twice on my Disco last year. I did not close the engine's return lines like you did. I would say it is not necessary. I only put some kleenex paper underneath. But nothing comes out from the lines while running the engine. Do you plan a video about glow plug change in the future?

I’d be checking the intank fuel pump. The car will run with a faulty one but when the tank gets low it’s too hard for the high pressure pump to suck the diesel up to itself. Had a similar problem with the Ford territory diesel v6 which is essentially the same engine

New glow plugs and a wurth diesel injecter cleaner added to the fuel tank.. This will clean the injector spray pattern to specs

Greetings from Down Under, Christian and Vera! I don't know why I am enjoying your videos so much - I drive a 200 Series Land Cruiser. I guess maybe being a Land Rover DIscovery II owner for a decade, and working on my own vehicle (though not to the same level as you guys!) I am curious about what it would take to maintain a Disco 3 diesel. I have to admit, I am a little concerned about just how much work is required, compared to a Toyota, which is just routine oil and filter changes. Nonetheless your videos would help me if I were to buy a Discovery 3 as a weekend hobby vehicle. :) By the way, I think fixing a Defender is *significantly* easier to work on compared to a Discovery. There is a lot of old school stuff in it similar to a Discovery II.

what was the solution in the end? I have a range tdv8 with the same problem, p2290... I have changed the high pressure pump and checked that the tank pump gives 0.5 bar and the injector return is fine tanks you!!

Christian, I have a Toyota but recently bought a discovery 3 It has a diesel leak coming from somewhere on the right hand side of the engine. I am sort of blaming you for this due to watching all of your videos and now owning one. Is there a common fault or wear issue before I start my journey to you and Vera for Christmas repairs.

Hallo LR Time . mal ein Gedankenspiel, beim 3 L ist die Hochdruckpumpe getimemt. das macht nur Sinn wenn sie nicht permanent Hochdruck erzeugt, sondern als Peak nur zu den Einspritzzeiten. Wäre das Timing falsch, als der Peak zu früh o späht, wäre die Rücklaufmenge wahrscheinlich zu hoch und der Einspritzdruck zum Zeitpunkt der Injectorenöfnung zu gering. ob das beim 2.7 auch so ist , weiß ich nicht. macht weiter so, super Videos.

Now would the dealer have come clean about the steering wheel if when they started work the discovered it was only a loose nut, or would they have continued to replace the rack. 🤔

The low fuel pressure fault and hard to start on these engines is usually caused by a weak intank fuel pump. The intank pump is used to provide pressure to the HPFP and if the pressure or flow is not enough the HPFP cannot provide enough fuel or pressure to the high pressure rail. Replaced quite a few and its easy to diagnose. www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic130062.html Robbies guide will tell you all you need to know. If you do replace the pump please only change it for a OEM full unit and not just a pump. I know it sounds daft however i have never known a aftermarket pump replacement work for more than a couple of months.

All you need to fix a defender is a channel lock, some tooth picks a big hammer, and a tube of grease. And you don’t even need a manual, unless you want to rebuild the injector pump. 😂 also you can get away with only one opposable thumb on your non dominant hand, but two makes it easier.
