I have a somewhat similar trick to check injector pulse...I have an old piece of tubing with a bolt at the end of it. Touch the bolt to the injector and put your ear at the other end of tubing and the sound is amplified...

Great help, thanks! QQ though, if an injector (or multiple) are failing can this stall out the car in slow stop/go traffic? My Integra randomly stalls out after a few minutes of stop and go traffic, but than starts right up after 45 minutes of cooling down, I also recently rebuilt my distributor with new parts. Thanks

05 magnum PO301 just solved it with this. Heard my injector cut off for a .5 second per 5 minutes causing my misfire intermittently. Even that .5 second will throw and keep your CEL on, this merely tests for injector complete failure. Good stuff.

Hey Thanks!! I learned how to fix cars back before fuel injection, so I did not know that fuel injectors made a clicking noise like that. I used the screw driver trick to find noises like clicking valve lifters, bad generator bearings, and so on.

Nice idea, if you can see the injector. Many cars have to have at least air intake if not more before you can even see the injectors. So is it safe to run with no intake?

i have a mazda 1997 626 i4 automatic. car was running,i turned a corner from stop light and car died. felt like no gas but i just left gas station and got gas. noticed arc from coil so i replaced, not the problem . replaced fuel filter but not the problem. cut floor to check fuel pump but works fine and lots of pressure after fuel filter.was told by mazda dealer mechanic that the fuel pump only turns on when ignition cranked so fuel pump test to see if it runs when key turned on is invalid.so what is the problem ? car turns over but won't start. have not tried starter fluid into intake yet, but why? please help really need these wheels for christmas. thanks...

this is a great way to tell if the injector is firing or not..... not a good way to diagnose the problem for sure. if it is not getting a pulse signal from the ecm, the injector will not fire.

hi I have a 97 Dakota v6 3.9 it stalls when engine is warm.. I checked fuel pressure it read 47psi with Key on and about 49psi with truck running but when the truck stalls the fuel pressure drops to 15psi (immediately) after stalling (not) holding pressure.i replaced fuel pump assembly now it (does holds)its fuel pressure 50psi now even when it stalls it still holding its fuel pressure..good right?yeah but it still stalls even after replacing the fuel pump, cap and rotor,cam sensor,iac sensor,tps,and pcv valve.i haven’t had a chance to replace the crankshaft positioning sensor yet....I did realize when the engine stalls I checked for spark and there is no spark for a few minutes after it stalls.could that be my crank sensor or injectors??please if you or anyone could help me out I would really appreciate it.

Yea mine is weak, the spray is less than the other injectors on my workbench but it clicks...but does not slow down so much when injector is pulled, like other ones do...

You can also pull the wire connected to the injector. If the injector is faulty there will be no change in vehicle idle. If that injector is not there will be a noticeable difference in idle.

Will your car always throw a misfire code if the injectors are bad? I suspect weak injectors but no code.

Cylinder 2 in my engine is misfiring. I've checked everything and the one thing I found, after watching this video, is that the fuel injector to cylinder 2 isn't working. However, when I first start the car and do this test it does work. After about a minute the clicking from the injector stops. Any ideas? Maybe it works but it's clogged? Do you think I need a new fuel injector?

Also known in some parts as a 'poor man's stethoscope'. Incidentally, most any hard linear material works just as well as a screwdriver, even a cut off piece of wood broomstick. Other applications are picking out bad bearings, listening to relays cycle on/off in noisy environments, and so on. Keep it in the back of your mind. Don't laugh, this method often works better than most (but not all) commercial stethoscopes and other 'listening' type diagnostic instruments.

Holy shit im glad i saw this. Ive got a chevy express and it is way too deep in there to do the screw driver test with my ear but im gonna do it by doing kinda what u did with my headphone speaker and video recording

I got a question I have a 93 honda civic dx sedan...I recently started smelling raw fuel coming from the fuel rail near the injectors, I think it has a small leak and i noticed I'm burning a little more fuel than normal....what should i check for in this case? the hoses look good and new...I'm gonna check to see if its a bad FPR..Then im gonna run that fuel injector test shown here....but other than that I have had my fuel filter replaced about 1 month ago and replaced the filter in the gas tank as well...Anyone can help me figure out why my fuel rail smells like unburned raw fuel?

I have a 93 GMC SONOMA and one day I parked and 2 he's later walk leaving and it wouldn't start. I've put a new fuel pump and fuel filter. and relay. It got good pressure and there is fire to injector. but it won't crank unless i put gas in carb. its a 4 cylinder with one bottom feed injector.

This rocks! You just saved me a lot of hassle. My car started misfiring yesterday so I replaced the plugs and wires, but that didn't fix it. I took it to a shop I trusted, but they told me it was the spark plugs and wires. WTF?! So after looking for possible causes of a misfire, I found this video and sure enough I can't hear the clicking on the cylinder that is misfiring.

I have an 01 mustang gt and I’ve been battling with it had the plugs changed and all it was working fine for a while then it started back it burns gas real quick it stalls out when u first start it for the day when I’m driving at certain points it runs smooth for a second then starts back it also loses power and really gets bad when going up a hill could it be the injectors?

I'm wondering if my injectors are bad because I dumped about 850$ into a car I got for 200$ now it used to run great when it was cold but when the engine got warm or hot the car would slowly die if you put your foot on the gas pedal it would come back to life now about 3 mouths later after putting all new sensors and even a ECM the car will start up and shut right off immediately and you can turn the car on as much as you want to it sounds like it want to start but won't stay running I change the battery out twice with two new batteries and my car is a 1989 chevy celebrity with a 2.8 v6 T1 do you think it could be my fuel injectors as well?
