Nice instructional video. For those who are a little frugal - I always change all the hoses while in there and the main gasket because it's a crush gasket but I always reuse the screws and the little screw gaskets and it always seals. I've done it this way many, many times without a problem...2 cents.

What issue were you experiencing?
@Jurnymn2 жыл бұрын
@@jamalymall it would feel like it was starving for gas when it was under acceleration. Just didn’t rev smooth and would flatten out when giving it gas. It would pop and idle rough. Since then I replaced the fuel pump, regulator, regulator housing and the check valve. Also the filter. Both hoses that were on the pump and the valve. It runs like a new machine now. Power all the way up the tachometer. Smooth acceleration and no hesitation. Idle is smooth.

I have found that heating the hose will help loosen it up to fit over its nipple that it is supposed to go on, so you can easily get it on the nipple far enough for the new clamps. I use hot water or a hot air gun. I would like to know why you didn't use a new o ring on the filter before sliding it back into the regulator? There inexpensive and will worth using not to have a leak and lose fuel pressure after it goes out of the pump. A regulator and only work correctly if it is getting all the fuel that it is supposed to have going to it. The wire is supposed to be Teflon coated wire when it is in fuel. If I was going to go to all the trouble of getting new screws to put the plate back down, I think I would go a head and get a new gasket as well, and do it all the way by the book.

When putting the pump back in, do you straight out the articulating arm, or do you insert it with it as an L shape? When you say: I'm about to pop the bracket," is that what you mean by inserting it back in as in the L shape?
@mr_mcgrew10 ай бұрын
You'll have to have it straightened to get it back in. So the pop is me disengaging the catch so it goes back to the L shape.
@CarlosGarcia-ls4hn10 ай бұрын
I may have missed it, but why did the electrical connection from the old fuel pump assembly not fit the new fuel pump, which required you to cut if off and solder in a new connection?
@mr_mcgrew10 ай бұрын
That's the way the kit came. Perhaps the pump fits more than one model and they include the leads needed for the model you order. I'm not sure.

This was a superbly done video. Thanks for posting. I found you by looking for info on getting access to the inside of my bike’s tank- same one and year as yours. My purpose is to understand what access I have to push out a small dent on the left side of the tank and I’d like to do it from the inside. Once that console is off, I was hoping to insert a PDR tool inside. The dent is basically from dropping the bike and the turn signal slamming the tank. Any insight appreciated. Thx!

Great Video! Do you know if the shrink tubing is rated for petroleum usage?
@mr_mcgrew4 жыл бұрын
The material is similar to the wire insulation so I'm pretty sure it's good. Probably a good idea to check if the stuff you're using is. I've had no issues since the install.
@bikerjim62093 жыл бұрын
@@mr_mcgrew Like your video. Could not get mine out of the tank till I saw your trick with the folding bracket. That is not covered very well in the factory serv. manual. As far as the insulation, the insulation in the tank's internal wiring is not the usual material, it is Teflon. If you anything else it Will slowly degrade over time and spark. Please make sure if you use shrink tube that it is PTFE type and if someone uses crimp tubes that they are PTFE insulated or bad Mojo will likely result. Thanks

Question...when I took mine out of the tank that rubber sleeve around the pump was all gooey, do you think alcohol could have caused that?
@mr_mcgrew4 жыл бұрын
It breaks down over time in the fuel. I had to order a new one myself. Alcohol should have no effect on the neoprene.
@greenidguy92924 жыл бұрын
Michael McGrew I opted not to get a new one...I don’t see where it is needed. Think about it, mine broke down over time so when I pulled my fuel pump out it was sloppy in the zip ties so it was moving around...the same thing the sleeve is “designed “ to prevent. I call it another Harley fail for the simple reason I had to clean all that broken down shit out of my tank that didn’t make it into the fuel filter and the clogged pickup.
@greenidguy92924 жыл бұрын
Michael McGrew You really need to check out Project Farm’s channel, he covered the fact that ethanol and their stabilizers do in fact degrade neoprene and rubber of any sort.

My brother who's been a Harley Master Mechanic for longer than I can remember would disagree. Those screws stretch enough that torqueing them a second time can compromise them.

whats that flux called? i've never used flux joining wires together. i assume it's not acidic
@mr_mcgrew4 жыл бұрын
You can get liquid or paste. But you need the kind made for electronics. It cleans the wires and makes the best possible connection. You can make joints without it but they're more resistive and prone to failure.

What size and type of heat shrink did you use?
@mr_mcgrew3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure of type. I have a bunch on hand. As for size, choose a size that fits as close as possible. Even if it seems a bit loose, most heat shrink will shrink to half its size so it shouldn't be difficult to find some that fits.

You know if someone made a Harley SS fuel strainer for the bottom of the fuel pump instead of the cheapass nylon one's I just found in a million pieces in the bottom of my tank, you could probably sell a thousands of them.
@aaronguss509313 күн бұрын
Wish I had not watched your video because you put the filter nozzle and hose out the bottom of the filter clamp when it should go out the side facing the pump. Going out the bottom causes the chance of hose kinking and stopping fuel flow.
@mr_mcgrew13 күн бұрын
I literally did it by the book. If your hose is kinked you might have the wrong hose.
@mr_mcgrew13 күн бұрын
It's also a known issue that the original hose was too long and rubbed on the tank, creating micro holes that sucked air when the fuel got low. I replaced that before the fuel pump change.
