Clear, concise, highly informative, fully detailed preview. Great video quality, great audio quality. Positive attitude yet real world pragmatism. A world away from the brand fan-boy nonsense elsewhere. You are the 'go to' KZfaq source your valuable pre-purchase camera insight. Brilliant Maarten! Please keep doing what you do. I bought an X-H1 body and grip kit on the back of your preview and I am so pleased with it. It has rejuvenated my love of photography. Thanks!

At 7:58 RE: eye detect being grayed out. It's probably because the X-H1 was set to continuous AF. I know with my X100F those options are grayed out in C AF mode, then those menu options appear in Single AF mode. I couldn't download the owners manual for the X-H1 to 100% verify this (says the owners manual will be available in March of 2018), but I'm like 90-something percent sure it's because the X-H1 was set to continuous AF via the AF dial on the front of the camera to the bottom right of the lens mount. Cheers, hope all is well! Great videos as always, I was happy to see you had a video already out about the X-H1. :)

Maarten, I've been looking at videos on the X-H1 for several days. As usual yours is the best. I only note since it was made two firmware updates have already been made. I've owned a lot of good camera, and I am aware of the choices out there, But I'm going to buy it rather than the more recent Sony or Panasonic iteration for one reason: color. If the color isn't really beautiful no matter what else might be offered I'm not interested. Thanks for showing how the camera really operates. No one else has really done this. That's really helpful to me, since I've never owned a Fuji camera before, since almost everything I shoot is video. I'm suspecting that might change with the X-H1. I suspect you might consider an updated review since Fuji has completed 2 firmware updates at the time of this writing. Thanks so much for showing how the camera actually works rather than droning about your subjective opinions for minutes on end and arguing with some invisible adversary about which camera is best--ya-da-ya-da. Your the best and the most fair.

thomas Shea I just had a demo and the H1 its not much bigger or heavier than my T2 with its added larger grip. Personally I enjoy shooting with a tripod because it slows me down to fully digest the shot before its taken and I can walk around it for sussing out alternative shots. Also can use remote shutter release to not move the camera at all. The H1’s IOS would be beneficial when shooting in crowded public places where a tripod is a trip hazard or when travelling light or when needing free movement of camera. I like the idea of bigger and more prominent buttons for my large hands and repositioned shutter button. I think I’m going to have to change my T2 for the H1 as the T3 will presumably not change its shape as there has to be a continued differentiation between the H and T series. Its an expensive change though. Will be interesting to see what’s in store for the T3.

When you test, check out the ibis in video mode carefully. I watched a reputable review that stated it was very jerky in video mode and a bit useless, he said it would be helpful for stills though. This contradicts some people's statements but worth looking in to. Maybe he had a lens / body / firmware issue.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I've made that note. In general, if you want stable video, use a gimbal, tripod or something else. With the exception of nearly usable stabilization in some Olympus models, optical or in-body stabilization isn't a solution for video.

Thank you so much for this preview. It's nice to see Fuji hyping a competitive camera with careful consideration for video. I prefer Fuji's color science, and it's nice to see that expanding to video. The Eterna simulation looks so good. And the dedicated feature set for audio is very compelling, too!

Wow they included the flash from the XT1/2 EF-X8 flash....in Japan this one came as a kit with the XT2 when I bought it. I broke it because I never took it off my camera. Couple weeks ago I visited the Fujifilm HQ in Tokyo and got another flash from them because this type of EF flash is out of production. Strange they decided to release it with the XH1. Btw, Maarten if you ever visit Japan. You can borrow any lens and any camera Fujifilm has for free. They provide this service mostly to locals, but as a tourist and with your credentials it should not be a problem. Always handy if you don't want to bring a particular lens with you. Thank you for the review as always and your house looks so lovely....not the snow tho! brrrr I will enjoy the sunny weather here in Portugal.

Thanks for the preview! I had an X T1 for a week before trading it in for a DSLR. It just wasn't a nice shooting experience. Something about the ergonomics and shooting on the smaller (tiny?) body was a little off. This looks like a much more substantial camera with a deep grip and hefty design.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words. I didn't object to the size of the X-T1, but the X-H1 is clearly more substantial.
@DennisBloodnokPhotographyVideo

Great video. The X-H1 seems to be a great mirrorless camera. The upgrade to video and the use of 5-axis In-Body Image Stabilisation certainly gives the likes of the Panasonic GH5 & GH5S a "run for their money". Here in the UK, the kit with grip and extra batteries is almost £2000 (or around $2500 US). So this will be a serious investment for any enthusiast to make. But coupled with the best Fuji lenses, this looks like being a very powerful stills and video camera.

I must say, and this is just an observation - not being critical - I've heard that Olympus has complicated menu's.....hmmmmm.....you really did have me wondering how many more controls could be affected with this Fuji. I think my Em1 Mk II has a comfortable home for now and if I consider shooting Fuji, it will be my old circa 1975 Fujica ST-705. BTW, I love the winter shots around Niagara-on-the-Lake and the Falls......sometimes I miss winter with snow......Vancouver Island !

Just discovering your work. It's great, precise, slow paced so we can process the info. Good work ! I have a question, does eterna work like flog on videos ? Because you wrote "eterna color graded" in your example. Thanks for the answer !
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words - you're the first person ever to remark on my slow pace, generally viewers think I go too quickly. Yes, it kind of does ... but one can colour grade anything. I generally shoot with the chrome setting on the X-T2 and grade the results. The most interesting aspect of Eterna is that, in combination with the DR 400% setting, it enables a dynamic range of 12 stops - that makes it generally equivalent to FLog. The intent of Log gamma is not to create footage that can or should be graded, it's to capture an extended dynamic range.

A pleasure to read your kind words, thanks, appreciated. That is, in fact, a specific aggravation I have with the X-T2 and grip and I'm sad to report that it hasn't changed. (sigh) Maybe there's firmware upgrade. The way around this is, if you have access to a power outlet, is to plug in the charger to the grip. Then it runs forever without interruption.

Your reviews are pretty exceptional. I look forward to a full user review with unedited out of camera jpegs. I would love to get hold of this and the 16-55 for a week to do a side by side with my Nikon D810. I've got 2 bodies and about 5 nice pro lenses but just not happy with the out of camera results. I'm just a hobbyist and love the gear more than photography, but l have a history of some great film shooting but just find digital fails me. I'm baffled why such beautiful gear l have outputs pretty average results. After some Lightroom mobile app editing they look pretty ok but still it's disappointing the out of camera photos look like rubbish. All be it high resolution rubbish, the only thing I'm impressed with is the shadow detail recovery. But I'm really tempted to off load my beautiful Nikon gear and try this Fuji. $5,000 with the grip and 16-55 lens in Australia so I would hope it's not a disappointment. Sadly our camera / lens hire prices are ridiculous so not viable to hire gear to test.
@MaartenHeilbron

Thanks for your kind words. At this point, I have the camera and am working on the review but am waiting for the battery grip and the promised firmware upgrade, which should happen shortly. I do post the images used in reviews on flickr (as long as that lasts). Hopefully the film simulations and the ability to adjust highlight/shadow/color/sharpness can help you fine-tune an in-camera image that pleases you. In Canada many dealers have Fuji body and lens loan programs so you can try the camera for a weekend, sorry to hear that's not available in Australia.

That's a topic I hope to address in an upcoming video. From here (not having really shot with the X-H1) I can't think which I'd like better for that purpose. It probably depends on which lenses you intend to get, and for the moment , there is a wider e-mount than x-mount selection.

Thanks I appreciate the kind words. It's very hard to predict what technology will trickle down. I always have trouble with the five stop claim - and my method is to slow the shutter until my handhelds are no longer sharp with on and off. I rarely get what is claimed, but with good IBIS I can usually handhold down to .5 seconds these days (Although Olympus OM-D EM1m2 was 2 seconds.) And it doesn't really work at all for video - you've got to be really steady and then it's a small help.

I'm sure that it is - let me put that on my ideas list - but with the many colour profile settings and adjustments and the nearly infinite ability to make changes to the RAW files using your preferred software on a computer, not sure how valuable or relevant it is.

Hey Maarten, great video again! What is your take on using Auto-ISO for videos on the X-H1... on the X-T2, the transition from dark to bright room was a bit jerky. Do you recommend using Auto-ISO at all??
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
That is a test I will do in my full review. For video, AutoISO (in fact, auto anything) can be hit and miss and depends on the situation. If you can use manual, do.

If I remember rightly, one of the selling points of mirrorless cameras initially was the small size and weight..now were looking at a DSLR size fujifilm..think I’ll stick with my Nikon’s..not saying it’s not a wonderful camera because I’m sure it is but can’t help but feel they’ve lost sight of the size issue..(along with my Nikon’s I do have the original x100 so I’m not anti Fujifilm 👍
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
While certainly mirrorless cameras have been praised for reducing the size and weight, I'm not sure that's the only or real advantage. Using a mirror, although I understand that there are many purists who prefer an optical viewfinder, is really a complex mechanical solution to a problem that a digital sensor solves. With an EVF you can see the effect of your settings as you change them, and see the picture as it will be taken before you press the shutter. Particularly for video, the advantage of using a viewfinder to shoot (which is not possible with an optical viewfinder), makes the mirrorless design my preference.

Hello I wonder if it works well to shoot film with any of Fuji primes, such as the Fujinon XF 56 / 1.2 R or Fujinon XF 35 / 1.4? No problems with Jitter etc? Is there any difference compared to filming with a zoom? Thanks for a good review/ Video!
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the kind words, thanks. They should be fine - primes are typically excellent video lenses - zoom lenses don't really have an important role in a cinematographers tool kit. Jitter(unless our definitions vary) isn't typically a lens artifact, so not an issue. The only issue with zoom lenses is that they typically will breathe or visually adjust focus as you zoom. This is the reason for cine lenses, which are parfocal, so they don't.

Thanks for the mini review Martin - excellent as always. I've just bought into the Fujifilm system from Nikon (I got an X-T2 and X-T20). At first glance I don't think the X-H1 is enough to tempt me away from either camera as the increased video capability and physical size doesn't interest me. Are there any significant improvements in still shooting from the X-T's that could make this camera an option?

That would be one of my requests too, and this would elevate the X-H1's status dramatically - but then I'd be wishing for XLR inputs. In the end, probably easier to do this on an external recorder/mixer - I use the Tascam DR-70D.

Question.. what does fuji means with regards to “up to 5.5 stops of effective IBIS”?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
Excellent question! I wonder too. In my interpretation, I should be able to determine a shutter speed where I can take a non-blurred picture handheld - then turn IBIS on and take the same non-blurred picture after reducing the shutter speed by five and a half stops. In my experience, I've never actually been able to see the amount of improvement that's claimed, so I imagine that there's some industry agreed upon standard for testing with a machine that jiggles the camera.

Thanks Maarten for another informative review. I am just wondering why Fujifilm is not offering full frame sensors, especially for this price point, which Sony has many full frame options. Is there any technical reasons, or ....
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
I think it's a marketing decision, and I'm sure that price point plays to this - compare this to the Sony A7 series. Full frame is way overkill for video, and for stills they make the medium format GFX camera.
@prifreds
@prifreds 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. Would love to see a "technical note" video from you explaining Why Full frame Sensors are Overkill for Videos :-)
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
Even at C4K, the resolution of a video is 4096x2160. Or, if we were to use super35mm as a reference, that fits just about perfectly into an APS-C sensor ... does that make sense?
@prifreds
@prifreds 6 жыл бұрын
But I have read in the past that larger pixel size is good for videos (pls dont ask me why!). So why not use the "extra space" on a full frame sensor to increase the pixel size while maintaining 4k resolution ? (I love Fuji cameras and a proud owner of a X70.)
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
That would be good and is the approach Sony uses with the A7S series - fewer and larger pixels - that's not the norm.

What camera settings would you recommend to get the best images out of eterna? Would you up the shadows?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 5 жыл бұрын
It does depend on the scene, but Eterna does a fairly good job of exposing shadows. Obviously, if you're not getting the shadow detail you want, then increasing the exposure, increasing the DR and adjusting the shadow tone are the options to consider.

Thank u Marteen. Can you ask Fuji why they keep using the same battery while competitor flagmans in mirrorless had all updated to larger capacity batteries. With a larger grip now I am sure Fuji had space to include a large capacity battery. Instead they use the same battery and specs say it now decreases life to 310 shots per battery. Understandably, IBIS eats battery.
