Fuji XF 70-300 | SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY! this week I go over how I do sports photography with the Fujifilm XF 70-300. I have used it with numerous sports and it has proven to be a great lens for outdoors field sports. BUT it does have one drawback and that is its inability to autofocus well while zooming the lens. I give you ways to get around that problem in this video! I compare it to the XF 100-400 which is my go to sports lens for outside sports.

The 70-300 focuses fine as long as you keep the focal length constant. The 100-400 is superb but big and heavy and only use it on a monopod.

I had the focus issue while zooming last weekend. Wasn’t aware it was an issue until I tried it and saw it here. I had also tried subject detection on the XS20 but will probably try next time just using the more reliable single point af.

I’ve been using zone on the XT5 with the 100-400. And for the most part it’s been great for baseball and lacrosse this spring. The 70-300 I use both single and zone depending on the sport. But I still zoom then focus as it still does not work great for stills. For video slow zooming it seems fine.

Great review. I experimented with the 70-300 at a polo match with a XT5 and the latest FW v2.0 (as of 28 May 2023) and it was reliable, consistent and accurate on galloping horses, often moving at 25mph+ (if one adopts the right settings and technique).

As is the problem with most of Fuji’s non red badge lenses the lens does not focus while zooming so you need to pick your focal length before shooting. Which is fine for certain things. The 70-300 is very fast and is an excellent lens especially with the xt5.

Great comparison and points. I just switched to Fuji and have been trying to decide on these two. I like bird photography so I think the 100-400 might be better. IN this weeks video I do some small bird photography. Song birds mostly. I used the 100-400 and the 70-300 using the 70-300 was much easier handheld. As a matter of fact it was a joy to use. The only problem with wildlife in general is the slow f stop of 5.6 at 300. With the 1.4 tele extender that's f8. Which is a real problem with low light.

Interesting how a video that shows MANY examples and explains how the lens does and does not work gets less suggested play than the morons that just sit there with the lens and yak about it. KZfaq has many issues that affect us small channels. Sorry for the rant Alan. I get frustrated by some of the other channels that have no experience in the field getting more play than little old me. I think “old” is the big reason.

Thanks Kirk very interesting comments on the lens . I have the 70-300 and noticed the focus while zooming issue and thought it was just me not handling correctly. Do you have any comments on using the lens for sports with the 1.4tc which i also have . I am finding the F8 limitation when fully zoomed out a frustration as often the light is not perfect . I do some sports , wildlife , BIF, and coming to accept that i bought the TC for very minimal practical uses . I thought the stabilization would give me decent options to handle the light but am finding that is not the case . I have used the 400 on a few occasions via rental and been pleased with the results for BIF but its very heavy especially for extensive hand holding with BIF, and so opted for the 70-300 for size and weight , which is just fine .

Phil - Just as a reminder make sure The IS in camera is set to “shooting only”. You probably know this. I found that if I’m shooting with the 1.4TC I still need to have my SS fairly high. I have not used the TC for sports as I find that 450mm FF equivalent is plenty for the sports I use it for. Yes f8 is very limiting unless it’s very bright. I don’t use my TC very often mostly for wildlife or BIF which I don’t do very often but I only use it on the 100-400 for that. I keep it in my bag to use with the 70-300

Hi Kirk, thanks for this video. I am curious: The 70-300 not able to focus while zooming. Is this by design? Or is this a bug in the lens, that could possibly be solved with a firmware update?
@KirkWilliamsonphotography
@KirkWilliamsonphotography 2 жыл бұрын
This is done by design. Only the red badge lenses like the 50-140 and the 100-400 focus while zooming but still not as good as cinema lenses which are made to do that. It can’t be solved by firmware upgrade.

I rented the 100-400, and took it to the Palouse region of SE Washington state. It was wonderful! I used it on stationary subjects of course, not sports. However, bang for the buck, the 70-300 is very tough to beat in my opinion. I ordered one, and it arrived about 5-6 weeks later, fortunately. The 70-300 with the 1.4x makes it an amazing, light combo, with even further reach than the 100-400. For sports, sure, it would be nice to be able to zoom while focusing, but for almost everything else, that's an easy feature to lose and still save over $1000 over the 100-400. Lastly, the size/weight difference is tremendous, weighing about 1/3 and size wise, about 1/2 to 1/3 the size of the big boy too.

Did you try zooming in AF-C turning OFF OIS or OIS and IBIS? Because in those outdoors sports you are easily at 1/1000 s and normally AF works better without any stabilization, I know stabilization it is confortable in use, specially for landscapes, architecture but for sports the floating element can disturb to get better efficiency, maybe you can zoom better too. I am thinking about to get it, right now I am testing the canon FD 80-200mm f:4L for sports, using Ibis or even without in my X-H1 and it is funny, using focus peaking or split image... I told you in the video you did about using FD lenses that I was happy with my FD 70-210mm f:4 lens but in the past I got twice that L lens and finally I bought it recently and wow, how good it is!!! By the way, try cheap adapters without glass inside, I paid for mine 15$ and it works to infinity, the glass ones are for macro and you loose sharpness too, of course.

Pretty decent shots...but I don't know a single pro sports photographer that shoots with Fujifilm. Canon, Sony, and Nikon are far superior for sports. I'm a FUJI fanatic...but high-speed sports just isn't their thing.

Michael - Don't get me wrong I was a Canon guy from the very beginning. Only when I retired did I change to a much, much, lighter system and yes problematic with AF. It's getting better but still not on par with Canon.
