I use the 2.0 DTC all the time to set my focus point right where I need when photographing small birds, insects, flowers, etc. it makes a HUGE difference, much more easier to focus on a bug’s eye because it magnifies the EVF. I get a nice jpeg but a full size raw file for later use. I find it to be a killer feature.

Beautiful video, you are among the few, if not the only one, who has examined this function, in Italy and Europe no one has talked about it (or I have not seen it :-D ). This is my first post -EVER- to any KZfaq Channel! I was just watching your recent post, “Fujifilm Digital Teleconverter.” I found it most helpful and was sad to see that some of the comments suggested the topic did not merit more than a few minutes. While everyone has an opinion, I was most interested in the teleconverter function and found that your input was extremely helpful and addressed many of my questions. I appreciated how thorough you were. Your KZfaq channel has been most helpful! I am grateful that you recognize people who love photography may not know as much as others or value different aspects of the art. Although I “know” that the digital teleconverter may be little more than an in-camera crop, your attention to details made me aware of why (or why not) this feature may be helpful. At one point I wondered if the lenses you used were the "suggested" ones by Fuji that were capable of resolving the X-T5's resolution -I checked and saw that the 16-55 was on the list -thank you for using a variety of lenses! I am considering buying a Fujifilm camera and your videos are very helpful!

I found that there is no focus assist (focus peak highlight) in MF Mode with the digital teleconverter is on. But all in all this is a useful feature just like the apsc crop mode on a FF camera. With the x1.4 we got a 20MP picture which is still pretty good to work with. The clarity and resolution are still gorgeous especially with those newer optimised lens.

I like the Sports Finder mode. Its a 29% crop of both RAW and JPEG. You can see subjects before they enter the frame. Its great for composition with a constantly changing scene, sides, top and bottom. Since it is a less severe crop, I don't really notice a loss of quality. My 18mm crops to 23mm"ish". It does not work with electronic shutter.

One thing I don't recall you mentioning... You have to shoot with the digital teleconverter on before you take the pic. You can't apply it after the fact. But if you do shoot with the digital teleconverter on in raw+Jpg, you can go into the q Menu during image playback and turn off the digital teleconverter and reprocess a new jpg at the original 0x focal length. Great video Chris. These types of videos are my favorite.

I was wishing for this feature once the 40MP sensor was announced. It just makes sense. It's really useful on the x100v. But I have to say for some reason the images just don't come out as good with the x-t5 as the x100v, even with very good lenses. And I can tell in camera, without pixel peeping. I had no idea it was reducing the quality to S or M but it makes sense.

i have the xt5 with 50-140 and 1.4 teleconverter, and have used the digital tele conv to help compose shots that I know I am too far away to take and will have to crop in post anyhow, so it is a great tool from the composition point of view, and 10mp images will still have zero issues for enlarging and sharing on social media. thank you for this very clear explanation as always. The main benefit of the digital zoom for me is as a focusing aid. I shoot small birds and other wildlife with an X-H2 with either the xf150-600 or xf70300mm with 1.4xTC when traveling. RAW + Jpeg L but only process the RAW and have the jpeg as backup. Distant subjects in busy backgrounds often struggle with AF but I find the digital zoom often improves the speed and accuracy. I see it as a bit of a workaround until such time, fingers crossed an improved firmware is released.

Interesting how in the past Fujifilm did offer actual digital teleconverter technology in an earlier camera (the X70) which used in-camera interpolation (thus not losing on resolution) and was actually on par with Photoshop's Super Resolution feature, instead of a simple crop mode on its latest and greatest processor 🤔

The one usecase i can think of is if I need to see some of the detail further away at location. For example imagine you know you are going to have to crop it up later, now you can frame the image, and see the details that in preview a bit colser up, (while not reducing the raw quality until you can perfectly crop it later.). The fact that its not applied to the raw seems like a huge bonus, and not saving a jpeg i actually think is fine too, since maybe it was just for the utility of a closer preview on every shot automatically in the viewfinder.

That’s good news. I was wondering when Fuji would do this for video as Sony has been doing it for years. I guess if you’re shouting HD, if you don’t zoom past those dimensions, nothing is lost.
@colinhoward2200
@colinhoward2200 Жыл бұрын
@@GarretGrayCamera Hmm - zoom always comes at a cost. There is no magic here really. You can't ever "make up" resolution with digital zoom. So I take wider and zoom in post. In fact it becomes more interesting - if you take wider, you have to pan less physically, and if you use something like FCPX in post the pan becomes way smother and irons out jerks and judders. From my experience that happens on all camera brands.

Great video Chris! I discovered this feature recently and found similar results to you. One excellent point you make is regarding background differences. Very cool. I also tried a traditional 2x converter and boy was that a drag! The quality really diminishes and 2.8 went to 5.6 max aperture, shooting with the 50-140. So if you have a relatively slow lens to begin with the optical 2x converter is basically useless.

Hey Pete!! Great to know thanks! Yeah, I didn't get the traditional converter as I'm low on $$$ at the moment, LOL, but I'm hearing that f/5.6 is kinda a drag on the 50-140. I can see a use for this with the 100-400 lens for example. when you are shooting in low light (which is most wildlife photos in the UK or in a forest/jungle environment) using the teleconverters reduces autofocus speed with either the 1.4x or 2x in my opinion. and losing a few stops of lights is never good when ISO is already being pushed hard. In my limited testing shooting without the TC and cropping in post with X-T5 produces adequate results with smaller birds etc. So being able to shoot with the Digital TC to get a "Preview" Jpeg that you can see easier through the viewfinder gives you a good idea if you have got the shot before you get home from your trip

I use it a lot on my 16mm to work as I would use a 23mm. Because 16mm is too wide for me sometimes. Lightroom mobile remembers the digital crop and applies it by default afaik on raws. Since having a 40 Mpx sensor the loss is not so heavy and I have 2 lenses on 1 on the jpegs.
@DariusOutdoors

The digital tele converter is made for prime lenses I believe. On my Fuji XF10 it works wonders! The camera has a 28mm equivalent prime lens and when using the converter to 35mm or 50mm the resolution stays the same 24MP and it is noticeably sharper than cropping the 28mm footage. I even think the build in processor corrects lens distortion differently on the converter. So it's not just a crop. However, for obvious reasons as you say, the background blur won't change. But on a prime lens you have no choice anyways.

I see another commentor claims the feature is available for video, which I hope it would be, because this feature allow the use of lenses designed for smaller sensors such as micro 4/3. In particular, professional broadcast cinema cameras have standardized on smaller sensors and there are many great quality parfocal zoom lenses out there on the used market. Without this feature you will see a heavy vignetting with these B4 mount lenses.

The DTC is an easy way to create smaller JPG files, when shooting just JPG and for situations where 40mp is overkill. It's a bit like these 60mp cameras (e.g. Leica) that allow shooting at lower resolutions, but then by cropping instead of pixel binning. This cropping can be compensated for by zooming to a wider angle when using a zoom lens.

10:55 you have shown that the crop affects not only the angle of view but the range of sharpness as well. If you stop down the longer focal length by the digital crop factor, you should get the same look in terms of angle of view and bokeh. I think in the latter case you take a hit due to less light and therefore higher ISO but you have more resolution. I assume with heavy noise reduction and downscaling to the same resolution of the digitally cropped image, both look alike in terms of sharpness and noise again.

Hi Chris, thanks and congratulations! Excuse my Google Translator English... I hope you understand... This function is very interesting, but the fact that it is only active on jpg is a limitation! It would be nice if it could also be active in raw and that in post-production software the crop made in the camera is visible but reversible. With several machines it is possible to do this (for example Panasonic S1). This would make working in pp on raw faster, without having to use the cutter to make the cut made during shooting with 1.4x or 2x! I'm a wedding photographer, and this feature would be useful on raw! NB. The "sport viewfinder" mode applies the 1.29x crop on both jpg and raw! I would like 1.4x and 2x cropping in raw, visible in LR but reversible... It would be nice to ask Fuji to do it with a new firmware! A thousand thanks! Best regards

Another excellent video, Chris. But there’s one inaccurate statement that needs clarification. When comparing digital to optical teleconverters you stated that with optical teleconverters “there is no loss of resolution.” That’s simply not true. There is almost a hit to resolution at some level with it being more noticeable with 2x teleconverters compared to 1.4x. In some cases, the resolution degradation is enough to make cropping a viable option in place of using the teleconverter.

I’ve used the digital zoom on the X100V - quite a handy feature. I don’t think it reduces the image size though but I’ll check!

I have used this feature on the X100V and the image size remains exactly the same, 6240 x 4160. This is because Fuji sizes up the cropped versions with a built-in program similar to the program, Genuine Fractals, used in the early days of digital photography when we only had 2MG sensors that otherwise was insufficient to cover a two-page spread for print publication. Check it out!

You can use it with raw just to make it easy to focus on distant objects. The resulting image is the raw with perfect sharpness at the right spot. The problem is that focus peak doesn't work with feature.

That’s such a frustrating limitation!!! It’s ideal for manual focus otherwise.

Hello! I have a Fujifilm X100F that has the digital teleconverter function. First of all, it must be said that it can only be activated if I shoot in jpg. But to my pleasant surprise it doesn't crop like it does in Lightroon. On the contrary, it does a rescaling and keeps the size of 6000x4000 pixels. And it actually does quite well. That's why it strikes me that the X-T5 doesn't do the same. Could it be that in this case if you shoot in raw it cuts and if you shoot in jpg it doesn't? Please can someone confirm it for me? Thank you so much! Greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina!!!

Hello, I want to buy a 1.4 teleconverter for my 70-300 lens, but do you think it is a logical decision to add a little more on it and replace my X-T4 camera with X-T5 and shoot birds and animals with 2x digital teleconverter. This way I will not lose aperture. Which is better in terms of focus speed and quality? Thank you.

Looks like the digital tele narrows the angle of view just as going from full frame to APS-C does. So, it’s actually a crop. Regardless, nice feature.

You can use this with video at least I use it with my XH2, in 4K HQ you can use the zoom, remember with video often there is already a crop applied, my XH2S does not do this with its lower resolution sensor.

I've been using it with my 100-400 to do "test runs" of what the focal range of the real teleconverters would be like. Getting use to what that lens would be like on a 1.4 or 2.0 physical teleconverter. I'm not too worried about the light loss from the physical ones given the ois+ibis on that lens and X-H2 body, and also that I'm in Texas where the sun is so brutally bright I sometimes NEED to stop down to f9 while at 125 iso and +1/1000 shutter speed. I've also used it at a race track down here given some parts of the viewing area are blocked off. Felt great rolling with (granted a chunky lens for Fuji) just a 100-400 while some people on Canons and Nikons were running the giant 600+ primes on monopods, while the digital teleconverter helps surpass that full frame focal length.

What I don't understand is why you can't get a 1.4 or 2x cropped raw file? I thought that is what the camera was doing until I looked at my photos, as I was only shooting in RAW at the time. If fiju does do an update, I'd love for them to incorporate a setting that allows the user to choose between a cropped jpeg or cropped raw file, I like having all the information for editing before I export them as a jpeg. I also don't really care to have the normal non cropped file, since all I wanted was a cropped raw file anyways. I know it takes 2 seconds to crop in Lightroom, but thought that the in-camera ability to crop a raw file with the teleconverter was a nice idea. Am I the only one that thinks like this though?

Isn't it basically the same as simply cropping your image in post? Might as well not use digital zoom at all and do it in post, retaining original jpeg.
