Sold my 100-400 for one of these and not regretted it as it sharper and excellent wide open at 600mm. Also better with TC x1.4 than 100-400. I can carry this by tripod foot as it is well balanced. I use the 70-300 for more general work. If you accept the f/8 limitations then it is great. I have only shot hand-held and even ISO 12800 have yielded satisfying shots with recent Lightroom and Topaz treatments. I use an XS10 and the 26MP seems a good match.

just a recommendation, dxo or even lightroom has better AI noise removal than topaz for me.

A very well balanced review. Decisions, decisions. I am still using the 100-400+TC1.4 on my X-H2S. Something is holding me back from getting the 150-600. The fact that most reviews are damning with faint praise is part of the reason. I think the other is that like a lot of enthusiast photographers I'd need to liberate some of the capital in my Fuji glass and I am reluctant to trade in the 100-400 to defray some ot he cost (the most obvious choice) for the 150-600. Might wait a bit longer to see if I can get a good copy second hand.

I think that's the best way forward. I'm not sure your combo would be particularly improved on though it's been a while since I have used that combination.

I have been debating getting this lens. As you mentioned, the combination of this lens with the ‘5’ and the lack of a BG (thanks Fuji😡)will likely be an awkward setup. I rented the lens for an airshow shoot last November using my X-T3 (the ‘5’ was on order but it was delayed getting to me in time). I personally like the lens, the f8…ehhh😏 but I can live it, love the internal zooming, much better than the telescoping barrel of my 100-400. I might rent it one last time and give a good shakedown, before pulling that $2k trigger.

I've got the 100-400 and that struggles enough at f5.6 in woodland when out birding. I don't think I'd get anything at f8 so it'd be for perfect light only. I might be wrong, bit I don't think it's for me. As always, thanks for the great review and hard work putting it together :-)

After adapting Tamron 150-600mm G2, it's plain to see how much better IQ-wise this is esp on the long end. Will be picking up a used copy soon...

Every lens should produce better results on the 40mp, as far as I can tell.

It’s because of diffraction at higher apertures. So yes, it will perform better on a 26mpx sensor at higher apertures. Dustin Abbott covers this
