The Fujifilm X-E4 might be my new recommendation for the best camera in that ~$1000 price range. At $849, it gives amazing image quality and autofocus that is more than enough for basically any task I threw at it. Pairing it specifically with some of Fujifilm's smaller f/2 prime lenses gives you a very compact setup that is a budget powerhouse.
While I don't mention it much in the video, it also does 4K in F-Log and might get added to my KZfaq setup as a B-Cam in the future.
A huge thanks to the good people at @Moment for sending the @Fujifilm USA X-E4 over for launch.
Pre-Order the X-E4 here: moment.8ocm68.net/bWQ1g
*Just a heads up, the original price I was provided was $799, but it looks like the launch price is $849. Not a big difference, but needed to note.

True, I wasn’t given info on those things as they came in the box with the camera. Fwiw, for the pancake and f/2 lenses, I don’t think the grip is necessary, but the thumb rest is helpful. The grip would be great for larger/heavier lenses though.

Having a second "almost the same" camera body is super handy. I got my EOS 80D a few years back and then picked up a Rebel SL2 a while later precisely because their sensors are virtually identical. My wife uses the SL2 primarily as she likes the size, but I can sling both when I'm covering an event and the results between the two are indistinguishable even if the SL2 does lack some features. Any time a manufacturer can "reuse" a sensor and features across a line is a huge win.

The X-E series is great for left eye shooters. The X-E2 is what got me to ditch my fullframe DSLR to begin with. I went to an X-T3 only to hate squeezing my dominate left eye against my right hand. Now I use the X-Pro3.

Three years ago I picked up a used XE-2 and I've never parted with it. It's the camera I never knew I had to have. I've kept my kit very simple, and I've only had three lenses for it, basically one at a time. If I can't find another XE-2 body as a backup I might go with a X-Pro2.

Hey Benj, I watched your video comparing this camera to the X-Pro 3, then found this one of yours. Both good videos. The camera look awesome and Im pretty sure I'm going to buy one of these. I was so happy to hear you preferred the feel of the camera with out that big grip thing. I think it makes the camera look ugly, so just the fact that you liked the feel better without it is promising. I'll definitely get that thumb thing though. . . I'm going to subscribe, good content.

Maybe it's the unicorn! I've been looking for something with a flip-up screen to replace my x100t for when I need to do a video or some product photos for our company. That often calls for something other than a medium wide angle. The fact this camera is a lot cheaper is a big bonus. Great review!

Spot on, thanks for mentioning the eye-relief. It seems the EVF is unchanged from the X-E3 and I just couldn’t get on with it with glasses whereas the X100 series and the earlier X-E1/2 are fine. They’ve done a great job with the design otherwise and the viewfinder is probably good enough even for most glasses wearers.

I haven't looked at the specs yet, but the X-E3 + XF 27mm (first gen) was actually lighter and just as pocketable as the X100F. I wonder if the same is true of the X-E4 + XF 27mm (2nd gen) vs the X100V. (But by "pocketable" I mean "coat pocket", because none of these things are really pocketable).

I loved my old X-E2S. It was so small that I took it everywhere with me. I let it go because there were some features that were not as great compared to other cameras. The form facto was amazing and just made it a pleasure to use. I wish this had weather sealing but not a deal breaker for me. One area where the x100v is superior is flash sync speed. And to be honest, I like the option for a OVF. I wonder how this camera compares to the X-Pro3 as really the XE lineup is a baby X-Pro.

The EVF is the same as my 8 year old XE1. The XE1 got better button setup and the old first generation sensor has a more filmvibe look to the pictures. Bought one used with 2 great analogue lenses and a converter for 150 dollars. I really wanted the the XE4 and had put away money for it. But bad EVF, no WR in 2021 is just nuts. Instead I can get a XT3 with same sensor, great EVF, double card slots and WR for the same price as a new XE4.

Fwiw, my video comparing the two drops in a couple of hours and I wouldn’t say that the X-E4 is a “better” camera than the X100V, it all just depends on your preferences. The X100V has more than a couple of features that are superior, but the X-E4 has obviously more flexibility and comes in at a slightly lower price point when you consider lenses.

XE4 was targeted more towards non-Fujifilm newcomers who are not enslaved to the traditional Fuji style of operation/control navigation. Hence, XE3 users would certainly complain. Therefore, XE4 is a simplified minimalist design for quick snapshooting without being bothered with loads of buttons and knobs. In reality, to take a fast pic, it involves only focusing, aperture, shutter speed and ISO. On XE4 on Auto ISO, these other non-critical parameters/privileges are all pre-set and set aside (perfectly logical) leaving only the exposed speed, aperture and compensation for quick tweaks. Fantastic. One thing is for sure, many Fujifilm loyalists cannot embrace change and have been enslaved to the historical design/operation of Fujifilm cameras. And we know that Americans are the creator and biggest advertiser and trainer of CHANGE MANAGEMENT and “embracing change”. Sheer hypocrisy😂😂 With the XE4, Fujifilm wants to break away from that old mould by attracting new target market who wants performance + simplicity. Think of a new Porsche owner needing to adapt to a barebones high performance Lotus Exige.

The lack of weather sealing is a deal breaker for me. My best images have been caught in the worst weather. Since they were able to do it for the X100V it's a shame they couldn't have done it for the X-E4 which shares so many other features [with the X100V]. Otherwise it's a great camera and I'm happy to see Fujifilm refreshing the X-E line.

What a transition this the X-E line has gone through. This one looks like Fuji is pushing it towards entry-level. Wish it had a better grip rather that be an aceessory, no IBIS, no WR smh

@@5Fenrir the shape isn’t Fuji to me. I’m a sucker for rangefinder cameras. I would have the xpro3 again if it wasn’t for that screen. This camera will be a nice companion and secondary camera for work and family.

And strangely nothing about this Q button impossible to use with the thumb rest, no SCM button, no back dial. How Fujifilm pay you for this "review"? A Xe4? - I have a X-E3 and this camera is a joke, it's not a X-e and very expensive, the price is max 600 dollars.

I very rarely use the Q button, so for my use it hasn’t been an issue, but I do prefer having it on the back like the X100V.

@@benjhaisch I have a X-E3 not X-T3. Talk about the real problems of this camera. Q button with thumb rest..., no focus button in front. A camera is not just a design, yes its a nice camera I am agree but zero ergonomic and for 1000 dollars with this ewpensive extra it's a real problem. The same of a XS10 with Ibis. do not lie so obviously $849 it's just a body it looks like not a new camera but a downgrade of the previous model, so it should be a maximum of half-price of a previous model. but it not! so my recommendation do not buy before it's become $300 wit a lens
