Always enjoy your detailed & thorough reviews. Decided to make the switch from an X-T3 to the X-H2 a couple weeks ago and this feels like a huge upgrade on multiple levels. I've only used it for my daughter's soccer games so far, but saw an immediate improvement in the overall quality of the shots I was getting and a higher percentage of keepers as well.

Thanks for a very clear and comprehensive review Andy, the XH2 is top of my list at the moment. I had hands on of it and the Nikon Z7 today and I felt the XH2 was the better handling camera. As an XT3 landscape shooter I will wait for the XT5 before making a decision but on the strength of what I have seen so far I agree with you the XH2 is looking like a fabulous choice. So pleased I have invested in Fuji, I think they are taking a huge step here.

Well four months later… your story is about the same as mine. I ended up getting a H2 over the T5. Why? The buffer. I am mostly a landscape shooter but I do shoot much faster subjects and was worried about the buffer filling up after a second or two. Not a spray and pray shoot but intentional burst to get just the right shot.

The EVF is a bliss on XH2, for manual focusing just perfect. Coming from the XT2 which was a hassle on manual focusing, where you often will miss the focus and shot.

Hi this was such a great video and you take beautiful photos! I have a question I hope you don’t mind helping me with: I have an XT3 and I'm just looking for, ideally, an all-in-one lens I can use for events, portraits, and to be prepared for lowlight situations. I love that Fuji lenses are small and easy to carry, but if I don't need to carry multiple lenses, I'd rather not. Do you have any recommendations? Another KZfaqr suggested an 18-50mm f2.8 and a “1.4 prime lens” but they never said which/how many mm for the prime lens exactly, sigh. Thank you! 🙏

Thanks for taking the time to provide additional information overlaid on your video. You provided enough information on setting handling, so I decided to go for the X-H2 instead of waiting for the X-T5. I have not used a PASM-based camera since the X-T1 came out, but I'm thinking 40MP and the deeper grip/nice shutter combination of an X-Hx series would make the X-H2 worth it.

Easily the most informative and best review I've seen. So nice to hear the thoughts of somebody who really takes great photos not just gear reviewers. Did you ever experience any issues with rolling shutter in real world experiences? I feel like I've never experienced it with the X-T4 or even X100V recording video, so I would probably be fine with this. Crazy that you can get the same AF system with 40MP for $500 less and only miss the stacked sensor which as you said seems only really relevant for super slow mo or high speed action shooting.
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the comment, really glad you enjoyed the review. I didn’t notice any rolling shutter in the time I was using it, and I haven’t heard reports about it so I don’t think it’s an issue. I agree with you that this is a really good value, although my understanding is that the stacked sensor is more expensive to produce, which accounts for the price difference, along with some extremely strong hints from Fuji that the 40mp sensor is going to be reused in future cameras. So you’ll probably get the same sensor, along with the same AF and processed in the XT5, but minus the CF Express card, minus the super high res EVF and minus some of the video features like Pro Res, and the really high shutter speeds. And that will likely cost less, as Fuji claim the XH series is the flagship and above the XT series.
@b3arodactyl
@b3arodactyl Жыл бұрын
@@AndyMumford Thanks for the insight. Have you found the 10-24 works well with the new 40mp sensor? It’s not on the list of supported lenses but neither is the 16mm 1.4 which is one of fuji’s sharpest lenses afaik

Great review! Thanks a lot for putting this together, highlighting the most relevant features in my oppinion. The specifications and features do sound very tempting. Given your experience with the full range of X-bodies and your focus on light-weight equipment, do you consider this body to be your first choice to take with your for a hiking trip (given it's only 50g on the X-T4), or would you prefer the X-S10 which is ~200g lighter?
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford Жыл бұрын
Ah, honestly, I can't say. I use different bodies all the time now depending on how many lenses I'm taking, whether I'm taking a drone or not, etc. I would say though that I would pick this over the X-S10 most of the time unless weight were absolutely critical

Jason, Andy did mention the X-H2's high ISO performance (still photos at Grand Central Station) is slightly better than the X-T4's. As you know ISO performance and DR are closely linked. I think that is a positive sign for the X-H2. I'm pleasantly surprised.

Great review. As an X-T user, definitely agree with you on the lot of us missing the articulating screen. As (slightly) bulky as it was, it was extremely comfortable to use as from a photo-centric perspective. Perhaps Fujifilm could have kept the articulating screen for more photo-focused line up/users, and pass off the flip-out screen to more video-focused users or devices (ie. X-H2S).

Thanks for the comment. I'm curious about whether the XH line will have an effect on the screen on the X-T5. For sure, the video is still going to be really strong in that camera, but it's one thing they could use a differentiation point from the XH2. I guess we'll see

Great review as ever. I was interested in the comment you made regarding your initial impression of build quality. I have an X-T2 and X-H1 and have been reluctant to upgrade to the X-T4 because somehow it feels the material is cheaper. It sounds as if, although a great camera, I will get a similar feeling with the X-H2 which is a great pity.
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford Жыл бұрын
I didn't feel that about the XT4..that to me feels like a very solid camera. I think the thing with the XH2 is that so much of the sides are doors for the many connectors, and the flip out screen runs all the way along the bottom of the camera (it has no housing) and felt a little less solid at first. Also, i've been using the GFX a lot recently, which is an incredibly solid camera, and that may have affected my first impressions. After using it for a while though I was really comfortable with the build.

Another excellent review - the best I could find until now in the whole internet! What do you think Andy: Is the Fujinon XF 16-80/4.0 able to exploit the full potential of the 40MP sensor? In my country they sell the X-H2 in kit with this lens for an attractive price of 2400 Swiss Francs.
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. The 16-80 isn't an optimised lens and won't exploit the full potential of the sensor. We asked Fuji about this given that they're selling it as a kit with the XH2, and they said that while it won't optimise the full resolution, it's still a decent lens and you'll notice the increase in resolved detail over a 26mp sensor
@markusbolliger1527
@markusbolliger1527 Жыл бұрын
@@AndyMumford The 16-80 will be okay for my needs - but what about the 10-24? In landscape photography I am a wideangle-junkie (although I shoot with tele lenses as well, depending on the motif), and therefore the extreme wideangle from 10-13mm in APS-C must give me satisfying results not only in the center of the frame. I would be very thankful to you if you could test this for us.

Amazing review Andy! Been following you for almost 2 years now and love your content and structure of camera reviews. I've been looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this camera for a while. I do have a question around Controls and Handing. As someone who is coming from an XT3 I am open to going to a PASM dial however in my mind I thought I could use the front dial for ISO, real dial for shutter speed, and keep the aperture to the lens. It sounds like this is not the case? Can you please talk through how you have the camera setup as someone who also shot with the xt4 and xt3 for some time now? This nit pick on my end feels like a big deal but maybe in practice it's not that big of a deal.

A fine review. The three things that separate the H2 vs H2S is the pixel shift, more megapixels, and 8K. For the rest, the H2S is the one to have (as a hybrid shooter). I had the H2 and now have and will keep the H2S....until the next 'toy' comes along ;)

I would love to see the comparison between x-h2 and GFX or even full-frame if you have one, I know it is the different system but I love to see how close can it make. Lastly, does more pixels in camera help the tonality of colour ? Great review as always !
@AndyMumford

I no longer have the XH2 so I can't really compare. I did do one shot side by side and obviously the XH2 is closer to the 26mp sensor than it is to the 100mp sensor. As for the tonality of the colour, that comes from the colour information. The XH2 has 14 bit colour, the GFX has 16 bit colour, so the tonal range is higher in the GFX

Andy great review long ago I used an X100iv but had to sell it because the diopter wouldn’t go far enough for my reading prescription. So at the NEC this weekend I made a Bline to the Fuji stand to test the MK V happy to say it now does go far enough, however I also tried the H2 etc and was massively impressed by build quality and EVF to the point where I’m thinking of trading in my Sony A1 and going Fuji. I love the high res stuff purely for cropping. I just need to figure out what lens to buy. My A1 is great but I don’t use video at all so partly a waste and 15FPS and up is enough for my sports you never know I may also pick up a H2S at least then wife can follow me about.

First of all thank you for this outstanding review. So accurate and so honest. My concern was and is about the low light performance. With the xt4 I would easily shoot at 6400 İSO with no concern. With my xh2s I can now push it evren further. I am assuming that 40 MP on a crop sensor is a compromise on light. Am I right or has Fuji solved it in whatever way.

This is an excellent review thanks Andy, one of the best I have seen so far. Now that the X-T5 is on the street, I would be interested to hear your thoughts on the difference compared to the. -H2, other than the dials and the rear screen, in terms of performance. Does the CFexpress card make a big difference to the overall performance, particularly when considering the frame rate in Ch mode? I currently have an X-T4 and X-H1 and shoot a variety of subjects driven by the camera club season that I belong to. My personal preferences are landscape and family photographs.
@AndyMumford

Thanks for the comment, glad you found the review useful. I no longer have the X-H2 so I can't really make a comparison like that, but my feeling is the CFExpress card really only makes a difference if you're doing long bursts of very fast shooting for intense action or maybe wildlife. The X-T5 is still pretty fast in short bursts. You really need to want bursts of several seconds to get the best out of the CFExpress card, or of course want 8K video. For my type of shooting, which is 95% landscape with occasional wildlife or street, the CFExpress card was pretty much unnecessary

Andy, thanks for this excellently detailed and reviewed post. How would the images of this 40 compare overall with those of the GFX50SII, ignoring the larger native size increase? You did mention pixel density differences and showed sample images of this 40mp and the older 26mp sensors nicely. So, does this 40mp make the GFX50SII more or less obsolete, for a someone considering entering the GFX system for stills photography? I do understand video capabilities are worlds apart here. Earlier this year I considered moving into the GFX50sII from my X-H1 system but chose not to because of the massive increase in costs in replacing my lenses with even just two or three GFX pieces. I think I just answered my own questions 😂 Your comments would be appreciated 😊.

It's hard to say as I don't have any of Fuji's cameras with the 50mp sensor to be able to do a proper comparison. I would say that I remember the files on the MF sensor as being really clean and having wonderful fidelity..but I shot with it in very different conditions. Realistically the larger sensor will give you improvements in noise and dynamic range, but in actual real world shooting, probably not that noticeable unless your shooting in conditions where you really need to push those things

Hi, I switched from the XT3 having used it exclusively for 2+ years. Inevitably it took some getting used to and likewise if I don't use for a week or 2 there's a short investment of time needed to refamiliarise. I still miss the ISO dial and focus switch on the front, but personally, the faster AF was my main reason for switching with the dual sensor as I shoot nature and fast-action. I have the XH2S not the XH2, but can concur with everything Andy says re. build quality and form factor, which is the same on both. If faster AF isn't needed, then I'd probably advise waiting for the XT5 and then doing a head-to-head with those as there'll be a step-up in upgrade terms relative to a switch XT3 > XT4.

@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford Жыл бұрын
Comparable to which full frame sensor? I've been using APS-C sensors professionally in my work (I'm a landscape photographer, my work is used commercially and sold for prints) for 7 years, and have never felt that a sensor with perhaps 1 stop less dynamic range and 1/2 stop worse noise performance at high ISOs compared to full frame has any real negative effect on my images for real world shooting.

I recently rented an X-H2s for a dance performance in the theater. I usually use my Nikon Z8 and Z9, but I purchased and XT-5, which I love for everyday and travel photography. My full frame cameras are for lowlight shooting. I used my XT-5 with one lens for the dance performance and the X-H2s with another. The buffer on the XT-5 was obviously slow, but the X-H2s was a fast little beast. I found iso 5000 to be the acceptable limit, but usable. Iso 3200 to 4000 would be preferable for lowlight. I enjoyed testing the X-H2s but not being a videographer, I will purchase the X-H2 for stills. The 40 megapixel sensor with Fuji's new processor is amazing! I did not notice much difference between the high iso images between the rented x-H2s and my XT-5. Fuji's new image processor really delivers!

I didn't shoot the cameras side by side, so I can't make a direct comparison with the 100S. Certainly there shouldn't be too much difference to the 50R you had though. They have similar resolution, and both have 14 bit colour, so in terms of roll off, there shouldn't be much difference. However, the larger sensor will give you more dynamic range, which I've always found makes the shadows much more flexible on the medium format cameras.

I have an XT3 (looking to get an XH2 eventually) and I'm looking for, ideally, an all-in-one lens I can use for events, portraits, and lowlight. Do you have any recommendations? Another photographer had suggested the following: -All in one lens: 18-50mm f 2.8 -For primes (all f 1.4): 16mm, 18mm, 23mm, 33mm, 35mm While I love that Fuji lenses are small and easy to carry, if I don't need to carry multiple lenses, I'd rather not. Thank you in advance! 🙏

@AndyMumford 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video. I'm not a big fan of the "all in one lens" because I tend to shoot either tele or ultra wide, so there's no option that really works. The most flexible lens for focal range is the 16-80mm, but it's not a low light lens, so in that case I'd say the 16-55mm f2.8 I don't use a lot of primes, but I'd say you need something longer than you've listed there. Say, the 16mm, the 23mm, the 35mm and then either a 56 or the 90mm. I longer lens really helps at events when you need to pull something close.

Thanks for this excellent review. One of the things I found very interesting, is the comparison of the same street image between X-H2 and X-S10. To my opinion, even at 100% zoom, you can hardly see any detail differences between the two sensors (40 and 26 MP). Maybe the lens is a factor here, apparently the 10-24 can not take full advantage of the 40MP. Still I believe, that in real live the 40MP are a marginal step up from the 26MP, not a major one. On a area where there are 4x4 pixels on the old sensor, you now have 5x5 pixles. However in total, with autofocus, IBIS etc., the X-H2 seems like a fantastic camera. Good to see, that high ISO performance is more or less on the level of the X-T4.
@quikee9195
@quikee9195 Жыл бұрын
At 100% you won't get any detail difference, but size difference - also you're watching a 4k video. Unless you have a good 8k monitor looking at the image directly (not a scaled down 4k video) you probably won't notice any difference, and even with the equipment, the difference wouldn't be all that much... maybe with a large print of a high detailed scene. The advantage of 40MP is the flexibility - better margins for cropping and added resolution to trade when doing post-processing.
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford Жыл бұрын
As the other comment pointed out, it's difficult to see the actual difference in detail between the two sensors side by side because to do that I'd need to be able to zoom in further on the larger sensor than I do on the 26mp sensor, which Lightroom doesn't allow me to do. What you can see though is how much larger, and therefor how many more pixels are on each object at the same focal length, so you can print bigger before the objects in the frame start to break down. Additionally, as was pointed out, you're seeing this video at compressed 4k, which is 3800 pixels across, when the files themselves are 7700 pixels and 6200 pixels, so you're never going to be able to really see the difference on a video. Whether the difference is marginal or not I think is really subjective and depends on your needs. It's a 25% increase in native print size along the longest edge, which to people printing is probably significant. For web use, then it's not really significant at all other than being able to crop deeper into your image.
