Fujifilm X-T2 How to Shoot with Manual Focus Lens (Rokinon 12mm f/2)

Hello everyone.
Hoping you all have a wonderful Christmas.
Today in this video I will show you how you can use a manual focus only lens on Fujifilm X-T2. Recently I got Rokinon 12mm f/2 lens for my Fujifilm X-T2. It is a small lens, even smaller than Fujinon 10-24mm f/4 lens. It is manual focus only. It has a smooth focusing ring and aperture ring allows you to control the aperture.
However, when I firstly put this lens on my Fuji X-T2, I couldn't take a photo. I pressed the shutter button but nothing happened. I was confused for a minute and then I started researching online. I found I had to turn on shoot without lens setting on in order for Fujifilm X-T2 to shoot with this manual focus only lens.

Ming, I can't thank you enough.. I bought the 12mm, F/2 Rokinon after seeing your Shooting the Milky Video and was heartbroken when it "didn't work." I went right to the Internet and described the problem. I was very happy to see your smiling face there and the video telling me how to solve the problem was spot on! Thank you for sharing your expertise. You saved me a great deal of angst. I'm headed to sedona next month to spend several days shooting the Milky Way and other daylight things. I summarized the steps, so I could carry a card in my bag with the method. 1. Go to: Settings (wrench icon) 2. Scroll to: Button/Dial setup 3. Scroll down to: Shoot without lens 4. Turn this ON (default is off) 5. Reverse the process when switching back to other lenses.

I’ve used this combo to film many times! It’s great. I don’t mind the manual focus with the wide angle. It’s pretty easy.

Ming Cai I have another question....how can I tell if I am focused because I don’t have an indication in my viewfinder. I have a green square that is always present but what looks focused to me may not actually be in focused. My precious camera, 7D Mark II would flash red focus points and I knew the lens and camera were focused in manual mode.

Down Range 217 Hi, thanks for your question. You can use a feature called focus peaking to indicate what area is in focus. I have another video called focus peaking makes manual focus easier, in which I talked about this feature and how you can turn that on. Thanks.

Some Pig - Radiant That depends, you can still put ISO and/or shutter speed on auto. You just have to control the aperture manually

Hi Ming, you video was very helpful. One question: once you are done shooting with this samyang lens and you change to a fujinon xf lens for instance. Do you need to disable again the "shooting without lens" option that you choose for using the samyang? Thanks!

A Benedicto No you can always leave it on, it works for both manual lenses and XF lenses.

Léo Wanh when you turn on the camera and shooting, keep pressing the display button until it changes to two displays mode. This is shown in my other video "how I ensure sharpness on Fuji X-T2"

I have put the Rokinon 12mm lens on my Fuji XT2 and came to see how the back of your LCD screen looked and I see that you can see your image in the panel. on my camera I only have the menu showing .. the peaking & the histogram the menu items are all I see and I cannot seem to change it to a view of my image I want to take. can you help with this?

I have the Samyang version of this lens and I’m disappointed with the quality of my shots. I have a xh1 with ibis and peek focus but the images look weird not sure what I’m doing wrong. What’s the sweet spot of this lens?

I have put the shoot without lens on, and I can take photos. I just noticed that the f in the display is just f.0 and this never changed. Is this normal? I found that the focus is blurry.

Charina Hägglund If you are shooting with a manual focus only lens, the auto focusing won't work, you need to manually adjust the focus ring to focus. Also it is normal that the f number is 0, because there is no communication between the lens and the camera. You need to adjust the aperture ring to choose an aperture.

Because the lens doesn’t have any electrical contacts, how does the camera know which aperture you are using? Will it affect the exiff information in your photo?

You can enter it into the menu. You won't have any EXIF data.

Found the setting by myself, it's a silly setting, why would they disable shooting without a lens? It's none of their business if I want to shoot without a lens or not.
