Yes, before drones you would have 1-2 recordings from helicopters and that is it. Now we have hundreds of breathtaking 4k videos from the event.

Everyone and their dog is capturing the outflow. Would be interesting to see steady drone footage focused on the throat of the beast throughout an eruptive cycle. Maybe zoomed in only far enough to include the outflow area on the edge of the frame.
@brucetidwell77153 жыл бұрын
I think the drones have to pull back to keep from being fried in the heat. Their poor little plastic rotors melt. Maybe id someone had an all metal "military grade" one.

that is brilliant footage, very thankful for drones, would have been nice to have had a bit more of the upwelling before the spill over but hey....i no complain. interesting to note is the massive internal hangover of the cone over the lava lake, this actually acts as a restriction as the upwelling occurs a bit like an upside down funnel and serves to accelerate the lava over the spillway and also accelerates the cutoff when the lava starts downwelling. i had noticed that the cutoff seemed unusually quick for such a large behemouth. another interesting point worth discussion is the amount of lava being spewed out. without being there it's hard to get a grip on the scale and size of this thing. but i just watched some footage of a dude walking on the lava toward the outlet, even on full screen high res its damned hard to see them and without the arrow i would never have found them. . kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r9Scaql5tbDNdpc.html having some scale to go by i'm getting the impression that well in excess of 100.000cu/m is being spewed out during each eruption possibly up to 250,000cu/m. over a 10 minute cycle that averages out to 166 - 416cu/m per second. the original estimate of 13cu/m per second (on average i assume) back at the beginning of the eruption at the time seemed 'somewhat' conservative. just my take on things.

You can see the cause of the crate collapse on the 10th. That northwestern wall of the crater had its underside completely eroded by the lava. Wouldn't be surprised if another will occur

Is there a way to see (and thus map) the lava tubes that have formed underneath the frozen lava? That'd be a cool thing to see.
@charlieinabox11643 жыл бұрын
I think we can only make guesses at this point. My only thought would be to use thermal imaging but I'd imagine EVERYTHING would be too hot to tell or the cooled top layer would insulate too well to detect a different in heat from underneath the rock. There may be some other tools I'm unaware of that may be able to detect the movement/vibrations of moving flows? Not sure but I'd love to see that too.

This is amazing .... I have a question, I'm trying to understand the scale of the cone. Does anyone have a rough estimate of its current size? Like what is the opening in the crater (example 100m x 90m)?

Great footage, I noticed some possible separation cracks on the left side of the crater top and I suspect that there may be another collapse of the crater top in time, but from that left side.
