Explore the full in-depth walk-through of the engine room aboard the Aurora Cruise ship! We talk a behind-the-scenes tour of a portion of the vintage cruise liners engine room. We check out the Mercedes Maybach Diesel Electric Engines, Diesel generators, control center, and more! Fun fact the control center room was used in the movie, Agent 11!
We hope you enjoy this A to Z exclusive tour as Christopher Willson doesn't show off below deck of the ship very often!
The Aurora cruise ship is a vintage liner that is undergoing an extensive restoration process. The ship's original name was the Wappen von Hamburg.
Watch our interview series with the owner of the ship Chris Willson, who is spearheading the incredible restoration of the ship! Within Season 4 of Living at Sea, we learn from Chris as he takes us around his vessel for a tour and explains the numerous ongoing projects that are required to make Aurora new again. This is Chris Willson's reality and we uncovered what it is like to be the owner of the Aurora Cruise ship. Check out the 3 episode series, to learn from Chris, Aurora's interesting history along with the heavy task of restoring the vessel!
We hope you enjoy Season 4 of Living at Sea. This is a three-part series. Be sure to stay tuned for the next episode!

It is worth remembering that the engineering and propulsion on this liner was in a class of its own at that time! The quality of the design, manufacture and construction was truly outstanding and there exists no reason that the systems cannot be brought back on line after being refurbished and tested. There will be many highly experienced professionals or retirees whom would be willing to dedicate their time and expertise to see this liner in operational order once more! Thankfully, the Internet can help greatly by bringing people together in this noble project. Whilst a mammoth undertaking, this project is appealing on so many levels, and the thought of seeing this elegantly beautiful liner once again under power and completely refurbished would be truly phenomenal!

I am beyond thrilled finally seeing this video....thank you Alana!! Please let Chris know we fully appreciated his willingness to show the engine room and making plans to get these engines operational. He might want to consider installing a Hi-Fog system to protect the engine room should God forbid a fire were to start. These engines and generators are a beast and much better equipment than what is being produced today. By the way just received the Aurora restoration shirt....love it!

Back in the day that this beautifull vessel was built,they over engineered everything so that it would last for a very long time and when things needed repair,components could be stripped,cleaned and parts where needed replaced for another xx years of service. These Mercedes/Maybach engines are a real gem,so is the entire engine room. I really hope one day this ship will be powered on it's own ones more as a testemony of the craftmanship that went into this ship to built it. Great work in keeping this special old girl alive and all people involved are getting my upmost respect.

The fire hose should have an inspection date stenciled on it. I don't know what you use for a pump but even though the mains are not in operation the hoses and fire suppression system should be operational before you start working on the engines. Spilled diesel and oil will be happening so fire danger is there. There are hose companies that might donate hoses or fire departments that dispose of hoses that are no longer good for them but still serviceable. As a firefighter I would suggest having some Halox or CO2 or other vapor fire suppressor extinguishers in the engine room.

Ha! What a sojourn during May 1966 from Hamburg to Helgoland (the standard daily route of “Wappen von Hamburg” during her HADAG service) to spend a few days in splendid isolation with my bride Heidi, occasionally visiting the nudist colony on a sandbank-dune off this prior-1890 British Colony in the German Bight (better called a Britsh shipping “observation post”, which, needless to say, they unsuccessfully attempted to blow out of the water during and after WW2, subsequent to it serving as German FLAK/anti-aircraft battery smack in the centre of the more important approaches to German North Sea ports.) That was subject of a museum-sight-seeing-walk about the island during our stay. At the time the “Wappen von Hamburg” was but 11 years in service, spik-and-span in appearance and quality workmanship . Thanks for restoring the ‘Old Lady’ to her old glory; she was built at the site where now Airbusses take to the skies after assembly.

That is, electric motors are used for movement. I thought the usual scheme with a propulsive diesel engine. The whole problem with engines is their certification according to the register for all sorts of different protections, such as overspeed (should be both electronic and mechanical at the same time) and many others. It is good that this diesel generator is small - there will be no problems with the transportation of spare parts. Once we changed the crankshaft on our tanker diesel generator - we had to cut out part of the ship's side - it is huge.

Maybach Engines are the same as used in the German V200 diesel hydraulic locomotives and British Rail Class 42 Warship and Class 52 Western Diesel Hydraulic locos. They are very expensive to overhaul 150 k+ ea and very advanced engineering for their time. 6 valve heads, overhead camshafts, roller main bearings and also somewhat fragile with much finer tolerances compared with larger heavier slower running engines. The Maybach MD was developed into the MTU 538 range which I believe was made until the late 1990's...

The drive motors are DC electric marine motors. I'm guessing they're 6-8 thousand horsepower just gazing through the portals. Be sure to have proper electric motor techs test and work on them. Megging just tests the state of the coil insulation and amount of moisture in the coils. An AC drop test can be conducted to test individual coils to be sure they're good, and a bar-to-bar test can be done on the commutator to be sure it's still good. Also I recommend replacing and setting all the brushes. Source: used to be an electric motor tech and worked on 8k HP DC marine motors that a local steel mill used.

What's the bubbling thing? Just some lamp you found? All the EM switchgear could totally be made fully operational. That stuff was built to last forever. Plus it's amazing what they engineered for diesel electric at a time when steam was still in use. (the last commercial steamer was built in the 50s). The only modern thing I would suggest adding (only if there's room) is a battery backup for ship power so you still have lights, radio, GPS, radar, exc in the event of a total breakdown.

Good luck with the dream. However, the owner was shown his complete unfamiliarity with commercial maritime matters. Having spent 38 years in the industry, many of which in charge of European diesel- electric ship-board plants quite similar to this I have to say I don't think he is appreciating the sheer size of the task. The only hope I could envision is a very well-heeled sponsor. If you expect to attract financial support you will have to have lighting in the machinery spaces at the very least. My experience with Waukasha DG sets has been poor load carrying and very high maintenance costs. The last ship I was on the Wauks were replaced with Caterpillars. Sorry to sound like a downer, I appreciate his enthusiasm.

The kit looked at first in the video is an absolutely magnificent DC motor (specifically the commutator and brushgear, seen through the inspection hatch), probably connected directly to its propeller without gearing. Possibly the motors - I guess the vessel had twin propellers - were similar in design to those used in those days for steel rolling mills. Maybe the generators driven by the diesels are DC too, the generated power of each generator being controlled by the generator field current using a 'Ward Leonard' scheme.. Technology has moved on and nowadays, diesel-electric ship propulsion systems and rolling mills use ac motors which don't need commutators etc. but do need complex power electronic converters. It would be great to see the propulsion systems restored for the historical and heritage interest alone, but the cost and effort would probably be insuperable.

That’s exactly what I’d do, they’ll either run or they won’t. Just check they have oil pressure and make sure the heat exchanger is pumping water then work out what they need from there

Thank you for the tour- I am totally not mechanically inclined however it was very interesting and fascinating to look at. One curiosity question- Is the engine room on the ship located in the lower center section, bow section, stern section, or runs all along the total bottom of the ship?

I’m not sure what your Intentions are for the Ships future but if running it as She was Intended to do getting the originalPropulsion would definitely be a Wise decision IMO NavalEngineers are some of the Smartest people onEarth and this Ship was designed to work the best on the Power she was designed to use it would also most likely be the most Cost efficeint way to RunHer under her Own Power

My dad worked at Waukesha Engine! What is the purpose of the Waukesha Diesel in your ship? Edit: generator, got it. NOTHING sounds like a Waukesha. That's awesome😎 Waukesha, Wisconsin
@raccbc27
@raccbc27 3 жыл бұрын
Realistically you are probably going to have to remove the main engines and have them sent out and be rebuilt because most Mercedes diesel engines usually won’t be rebuilt here in United States because we don’t have metric tooling for those engines so you’re gonna have to have it in the back of your mind that pulling those engines is going to be the necessary thing. I’m not sure what kind of fuel system those engines use you didn’t show the engines in the video well enough to know if it’s indirect or direct injection or what kind of mechanical injection it has. Most diesels of that era you need to clean out the injectors make sure the mechanical governor is free and your fuel rack is not stuck, then all you need is good clean fuel and they should run just fine, the generators I would just clean of any debris check all the electrical connections and let her rip

That 5th engine probably needs rebuilt that's why it's in pieces they were tearing it down without all of them up and running it won't provide enough power to the drives you'll burn them up electric motors will run on low voltage but if you don't supply the correct voltage you'll torch them

Did I hear right, this was built in 1954? That was 67 years ago. If a young man of 20 worked on the initial build, he would be 87 years old today. At that age I doubt you will get many volunteers simply because by the mid-80s most of us have bodies that are worn out - arthritic knees, hands, fingers, failing eyesight, limited mobility, diabetes, prostate trouble, plus various cancers and failing organs. I would be more confident with the success of this project if the engines were common in the mid-1970s - there would be a potential workforce about age 67, in the US the age of retirement.
