Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden was grilled by the Deputy Leader of the Scottish National Party in the House of Commons over the human rights violations allegedly committed by Israel.
Mhari Black hit out at Mr Dowden over the mass graves uncovered in Gaza and called for the UK to halt arms sales to Israel.
The SNP’s deputy Westminster leader, told the Commons: “Two years ago when mass graves were discovered in Ukraine, this House united in condemnation and rightly treated this graves as evidence of war crimes, which Russia must be made to answer for.
“Yesterday, Palestinian officials uncovered two mass graves outside the bombed hospitals in Gaza. These graves also constitute as war crimes don’t they?”

Hamas is a democratically elected government by the way. And under international law an occupied country has the right to resist an armed occupying power. Just as the French resistance did in WWII and were hailed as heroes afterwards. No doubt the Nazis called them terrorists. The Nazis also left many mass graves behind them. But I don't think even they deliberately bombed 35 hospitals.

I wouldn’t say hamas was democratically elected. They won a plurality in 06 but there haven’t been elections since. Something like less than 20% of Gaza today even voted in the 06 election.

And they are also resistance fighters of an occupying power, which is legal under international law. What is illega,l is occupying another country.. So why is Israel not listed as a terrorist state? They seem to believe they have the right to do whatever they want by violence with complete impunity.

@@revpadma Yes, technically they are the only authority in gaza. One of the reasons for this is that the other (US friendly) fatah party, tried to illegally hold on to power after they lost the election. This allowed hamas to wipe them out and go after their supporters. With any resistance group it's really hard, the longer they last, the more violent and corrupt they get. Hamas use to be popular for developing social institutions in gaza, like schools and mosques. But now they rarely do that. The paramilitary wing of hamas has more influence than the state building wing because gaza is under constant threat and israel ensures funding towards hamas' paramilitary. Israel use to directly fund hamas as a way of counteracting the PLA (fatah party) and they now fund them tacitly through Iranian and qatari money. The reason for this is that, the more divided the Palestinians are politically (interms of who represents them) the easier it is to take more land from the west bank. Israel is by far worse than hamas, and unfortunately there's no 'list' that Israel can be put in that would stop them. However, through sanctions Israel can be stoped, like apartheid south africa, and hopefully through international law. As for hamas, most years, they are too unpopular in gaza, prior to Oct 7th the gazans were protesting them. Hamas uses terror as a form of resistance, but the problem with that is it hurts innocents on both sides and gives israel an excuse to commit genocide. Hamas doesn't care how many innocent israelis they kill, as long as the mission is complete, and this allows for some truly horrible acts. I think of hamas the same way as abolitionists thought of slave rebels. sure they are violent and dangerous (somties evil), but slavery is more evil, more violent and more dangerous, Israel is the same in that sense. Hamas is a symptom, zionism is the disease.

Investigation into Mass Graves These are the people who pleaded with the world to help them. They told us what was happening. First they told us the hospital was being bombed, specialist departments, wards, outpatients maternity wards. Around the hospitals bulldozers tore up access roads.and then bombed the people trying to find some protection around the hospital entrance. No food water electricity, medical supplies or fuel were let in so people died and the doctors continued to ask for some intervention some help. Then they told us and we could see that tanks encircled the hospital and opened fire on the whole group of patients and staff. After telling them to evacuate they were shot as they began to follow that order. Do you remember the nurse who described trying to move patients on donkey carts. Ambulances and their crew were killed. They told us because there was no electricity the deceased couldn’t be refrigerated so they buried them in the hospital grounds. Because there was no electricity ventilators and incubators couldn’t save the lives of the babies and patients who needed them. Then the hospital was stormed invaded by IDF snipers who opened fire on the whole group. People were run over with tanks and bulldozers people were buried alive. We have first hand testimony of these things and footage filmed by the most courageous journalists so many who died Then the hospitals were completely besieged. And now we can see what’s left behind. I had a small feeling of hope when their graves were discovered. But to hear “Israel as a trusted democracy can investigate itself! What level of depravity have we sunk to. I am an average 64 year old uk. I have never been so ashamed to listen to Oliver Dowden and Antony Blinkin speak yesterday. Lie after lie after lie after lie investigated and found false. NO BEHEADED BABIES NO SYSTEMATIC RAPE NO INVOLVEMENT OF UNWRA IN OCT 7 NO HAMAS HQ UNDER AL SHIFA….. AND DONT FORGET ISRAELS LIE WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION THERE WERE NONE.

People march not because they care only about foreign affairs but because they don't want their government to be embroiled in/starting foreign wars (e.g. take march against iraq war). Oliver Dowden does of course realise the significance and the comparisons between the treatments of Russia and Israel are stark. However, he has elected to be on the wrong side of history. He will not be easily forgiven for his complicity in this, and it is a fact that Rishi Sunak will be remembered as largely aiding, abetting, and running defence on, the Israeli government’s brutal, genocidal campaign.
