It never wears off Jess!!!!! I am 65 years young and it never wears off. I put in a fruit tree forest two years ago. It was so exciting to see the blooms and then the fruit, oh my goodness!!! I put money away for three years to by first year fruiting trees, they are more expensive, but, as old as I am I wanted fruit the first year and my dream came true. Thank you for sharing and GOD bless you all.

Your zinnias have a zinnia blight called Alternaria Blight. It’s specific to zinnias & plants closely related to them. It’s often caused by infected seeds, but can also be caused by overhead irrigation w/little air flow in a crowded planting. It’s bound to persist in those conditions, especially when foliage isn’t able to stay dry due to weather. It spreads very easily to other zinnias in the garden close by. I would pull them out before they self seed, as the infected seeds will continue the blight into the next generation. It does eventually also damage/effect the flowers & overall health of the plants. Start fresh in spring w/new seeds. Come spring, I’d either replace or treat that soil before sowing zinnias in it again. You can solarize the soil, mix in organic micronized sulfur, soak the soil in an organic fungicide that is approved for this blight & soil applications, or even use a diluted hydrogen peroxide “wash” to kill off any blight in the soil, then amend w/fresh compost @ sowing time. Freezes don’t always kill off virulent strains of blight. While this blight is unique to zinnias, I’ve discovered thru the yrs that having any form of blight in my gardens usually leads to more, different strains that effect other plants. Hope this helps you!

You and Miah are such an inspiration to me! I am 68 and 2 years ago I had a stroke, but I am fine except for the dizziness now. I only have an acre but it is in the middle of a cornfield in the country and overlooks the flatlands of the Mississippi River. I live alone and don't drive anymore, but my bff lives not far from me and helps me out whenever possible. (I get around this town on a golf cart so I am not completely helpless!) I built my own tiny house/shed/lawn tractor garage 10x16" with a porch and just finished it when I had my stroke. Since then, I have built 4 new raised bed gardens 2- 4x20' 1- 2'x24' and 1 4'x8', an arbor, 2 in-ground beds 8x8' and just got my neighbor to bring me some straw bales for mulching. (See my pics on facebook if you can) I love watching your videos and you guys are such a pleasure to me at the end of the day! I BLESS YOU!

Hi Jess, my grandmother once told me the excitement of spring is newness of life. The winter lays dormant like death. And so for seeds they lay dormant as in death but germinate to newness of life as we water and fertilize. Just as we are with our Father in heaven. In life we sometimes lay dormant until the word of God enters in and we have new life in Jesus Christ. The excitement is in us all the time for newness of life. Just like when we see a new baby. Oh my nothing thrills me like holding a new baby! The creation God has done. Creation excitement from God! I'm so glad my grandmother shared this with me, shes long gone but not forgotten. She is resting until Jesus comes then she will have newness of life. Have a Great Day Jess! 💕

@@grandiesgarden175 when we set aside a place to meet Him at, He loves it so much that He makes sure He shows up. Years ago, the first thing I put up in my garden was a very big cross. We used it so many times in plays, I didn't put it back. First thing I did was put it back up the begaining of the spring and boy did my garden grow for the first time starting it back up. I shut down for a year, when I came to myself, I looked around and knew the only way I would not loss everything was to homestead again. Everyone needs to have a special place where you can meet God and worship and pray.

No! I just turned 61 and I grew up in a vegetable garden (thanks Dad!). That sense of wonder, amazement, and gratitude every time a seed sprouts or a fruit forms, or you pull food from the ground -- it never goes away; and I think that, in itself, is a pretty wondrous thing! Happy gardening!

Seeds germinating, fruit/veg setting, a graft 'taking'- I always have the 'caught breath', the thrill-I've been gardening 26 years and it hasn't gone away. My nana is 90, and since she can't garden herself now, gets a thrill from my Instagram photos and videos. So I don't think that ever goes away-it's part of being in the 'club.' I am the same way. It never ever gets old. I planted some herb seeds about a week and a half ago. All have come up except the rosemary. The rosemary seeds were from my 5-year-old plant that had flowered three weeks ago. I thought I'd try to collect the seeds and plant them. Just to see what I could get. I know rosemary is notoriously difficult to germinate. I have come home from work every night and checked all my seed cells, all have germinated, except the rosemary. That is until tonight. I do believe I see one little itty bitty sprout just breaking the surface. Now, I can say that I am a gardener. I planted that 5-year-old rosemary plant using a whole packet of seeds, and only one germinated. And today, I have germinated a rosemary seedling from a seed that came from that 5-year-old rosemary plant. Color me a happy gardener!

late to the party here as I 'binge watch' your old episodes... I only have a few years on you, but I grew up having a vegetable garden and I regularly help my mother plant her seeds. She is in her late 70s. The answer to does it ever get old or wear off as to getting excited is NO. My mother and I were just talking last spring (it's January now) about how she still gets so excited whenever her seeds come up or her plants set their fruit. She asked me if I felt the same or if she was just nuts. We laughed and I explained that if she is nuts, I'm right there with her!

What things last you until next season's growing? The plans you make for next year's garden and how you organize it? What things you might be getting into with your leather business? And then there's the animals...😄

I have failed so many years as a gardener but this year for the first time saw fruit produced(though minuscule) It did something to my heart. Just as we seek the Lord and read His word and speak it He begi to show us the fruit produced, little by little. He amazes me. Thanks Jess! Your garden is gorgeous! Hand picking them worms off and using neem oil as a preventative works amazing! Ive been gardening about 7 years and it has worked for many different pests and fungus diseases throughout my garden! It's 100% organic which I love and doesn't kill good bugs in the garden. I only spray neem oil at night so the sun has no chance in burning my leaves and so it doesn't get directly on bees because it can kill them 😊 Living in f.l, we never get a break with pests and fungal diseases/mold so preventative treatment every 7 days is so important. Even through the so called winter we have. Lol

I still feel the excitement when seeds germinate after 45 years of gardening. It's getting to witness the owesomeness of life. It's a closer feeling to GOD and knowing you are part of the circle. Too bad more people don't think they can receive that same rush with working and growing food for their family. Instead they will sit round and complain about how much they can't afford and how expensive quality veggies are when they could raise fantastic ones for next to nothing. There is nothing to compare to fresh green peas eaten in the garden (my toddlers would have a bushel basket half eaten while I was working on getting dinner together.Laughing themselves silly when I went to shell the empty pods.) just recently my asparagus made an appearance, my 14 yr old granddaughter and I enjoyed it right there. What a memory that will be when she has little ones. We are so blessed with our gardens. You are a wonderful inspiration to all Jessie, your enthusiasm shines through. God bless

Beautiful Garden, love it. Yes, my Malabar spinach has that same leaf spot with the white center and red ring, I think it's because of not enough air circulation in the plant. Because my Malabar spinach grows right by my back door on my porch I guess it is too much moister on the leaves after watering. Not for sure though. But yes, I've eaten my Malabar spinach with those leave spots on them, it's not harmful really. Gorgeous beans, peas, and peppers there. I've been growing the Mambo (green-colored) Beans from Africa because they are drought tolerant and it tends to get drought-like here in central TX. And they are doing amazing in my container garden! They are duo-purpose beans and they taste sweet as a fresh-eaten green bean and I will be trying to save seeds for next year. So happy for you on all your garden and your beautiful collection of plants. Nothing wrong with having a garden Jungle. Yummy, cabbage rolls sound good right now. I will never get tired of seeing teeny-tiny itty-bitty sprouts and baby plants growing up. I only planted one of those tobascos birds-beak peppers and they are everywhere! Like a small tree! Beautiful. Thank you for sharing this.

I feel so lost in the winter too. I was raised in the mountains and was used to snow. We had a very short growing season. Now I live 75 miles south and we have a longer growing season, but nothing like yours. The first frost is last of September or first of October. Last frost is often end of May, first of June or when the snow is off Schaffer's butte!

the leaves and flowers and gardens look great....where I live, the leaves are awesome and I am delighted for my 'Kale' has done wonderful, and I think I will have a Purple Cabbage! Even one of my Celery is now sweet...for we had such a hot weather for quite sometime and the celery was so so so bitter, that I almost pulled them, But, now I am so grateful I didn't...My garden is a tiny one compared to yours, but, it is MINE! Thanks for sharing....Sherry :)

With regards to the sweet peas, my aunt used to just pick them for the birds, she would pick a bunch of pods after dinner then sit and shuck them on the back porch and hand feed them to the birds, squirrels and skunks. She had regulars that would come around daily...

I enjoyed every second of this video! I've had a time with the worms on my brassicas...grrr! Bt spray has helped get them under control for the most part. Jess, my hubby and sons put up cattle pannel arches in my garden for me this past weekend! I so wish I could show you a picture! I'm beyond excited for spring but I've got snow and sweet peas germinating to grow on them for now. And I think in some way I'll enjoy the slower pace of fall/winter gardening (in in South Carolina and we have pretty mild winters) but I'm bursting with excitement for this coming spring because you have given me so many great ideas!

Jessica, watching from Central Missouri...trending MECCA for homesteads. We moved from the extremely fertile river valley of Nebraska and moved into the land of clay. Everything you shared as your plan for compensating and fixing the clay are all great ideas and will work. We learned that even working with amendments we continued to experience excessive clay. Solution: Purchase bags of gypsum..sprinkle 1/4 -1/2 inch across the tops of the soil, turn the soil and add your other mulches and compost. Miracle in our garden and its a mineral from the earth!!

Hi Jess! After watching this video yesterday, I threw all trepidation aside, went out to the barn, built some planter boxes and am going to give this veggie garden thing a go! My entire life I have dreamt of growing my own food but felt I lacked the space and skill. However, your videos and energy are so inspiring...I just had to join in on this good vibe movement ;) Thank you.

You should grow some kohlrabi plants you eat the ball of the plant after you peel it, they are delicious you may want to grow some, if you have ever heard of them, you eat them raw as we always did, when they are younger, when they get to big they get pithy, but they taste like a cross between cabbage and potatoes sort of!

My Dad had a portable pen he moved around in the garden for 5 pigs. He called it his 5 pig tiller. Joel Salatin uses pigs to aerate and till the wood chips in the chicken house where he winters his chickens. He entices them to dig by putting corn in with the wood chips. He claims pigs "will work for corn".

Not sure if you'll see this. I'm watching everything from the beginning and this is where I am! Anywho, I've had great success keeping cabbage worms off my brassica by regrowing celery bottoms from the grocery store. The moths HATE celery. Start at the end of summer and keep really moist. They'll set flowers for seed too!
