My bike and its drivetrain got very dirty, after my latest XC race and I didn't have a chance to wash it right after the event.
When I got home, my racing machine looked like this... ENJOY THE TUTORIAL 😃

Best way is to wash before the mud dries on hard. Also, 3 coats of a quality wax like Muc Off and the Muc off Protect and Shine, helps the mud slide off. Also, only wax on the chain. If you are going to use a power washer, ok, but use a waterproof grease like Morgan Blue Aquaproof Paste as it stops water entering the headset / BB
@severs1966
@severs1966 3 жыл бұрын
I volunteer in a charity bike workshop. When bikes come in that have been pressure-washed, the internal bearings are always in terrible condition because all the grease has been blasted out and the bearings have then run dry. NEVER pressure-wash a bicycle. Even the pressure on a garden hose is often too high. Get yourself a bucket of warm water, add some "car shampoo" (dish soap has salt in it), and a dish scrub brush, and brush it clean. Clean the chain with a roller chain bath. Then lube the chain and derailleur pivots. Take care not to get lube on the braking surfaces.

Oh dear. Using wax together with oil is not a great idea. Wax does not stick on oil. The idea of wax is, it should repel keep the chain dry, so less dust will stick to the chain. Oiling a waxed chain brings the downsides of an oiled chain to a waxed chain. I do degrease my chains, melt wax at around 100 degrees celsius, cook the chain in the molten wax, chill the chain and install it back on my bike. From there I simply repeat the cooking process every 500km. During the cooking, sand and debris will sink down in the molten wax. There is almost nothing that sticks to a waxed chain, like an oiled chain. I have friends that ride there chains for almost 10k km. I do replace my chains after 4k to 5k regardless of their condition. Simply for safety reasons. But I really would not mix up oil and wax. They do not go well together.

Shouldn't use high pressure at all. It saves you a little time at the start but you lost that time later fixing your mistakes. Then you left the drivetrain (which has been stripped of all lube) to dry overnight and rust? No water displacing spray?? Crazy. Then you put the rusty chain back on??? That rust will come off and act as a grinding paste, wearing your drivetrain faster. You must have spent hours doing all this. Just wash it correctly the first time. Takes half as long.
@diviscadilek1764
@diviscadilek1764 3 жыл бұрын
From my experience, you can use high pressure. Just don't be stupid and use it near the vulnerable areas (headset is the most vulnerable, but the hubs, the BB and the rear linkage is pretty tough in my case). I usually use low pressure to rinse it down, then i spray the entire bike in car wash soap, wait 5 minutes, use high pressure where i can to get the dirt off, i blast the chain from the top to force all of the dirt out (including the lube), and I use the brush with soapy water to get the rest off. After that, I just use my dirty, oily drivetrain rug to get most of the water off the chain, and the next morning, I lube the chain. The bike is ready for more dirty business.

In my opinion the best oil to lubricate the components is the 6-56 marine oil , this oil is for boats so helps to prevent the rust from ocean salt , the mud is practicaly the same thing but worse because scratch and do wear in the components , if you cant clean the bike like in this situation you can put 6-56 oil in the components of the dirt bike , and helps to prevent rust and the mud put like a rock , I do this in my bike , then when you go to wash it use shampoo and a tooth brush for the components and a wheel brush is good for the cassete , a microfiber towel to que frame , fork , wheel and other components , use a microfiber towel to dry the bike , and if you have a air compressor use it but not to close to the bearings , put 6-56 in the chain , casset and deraileur and teflon grease , put wax on the frame and component , the bike is perfect , I do this al the time , my bike looks brand new , and if you can never use the bike in mud.

Chains will rust if you leave them wet without lubing them. I keep my chains waxed and they never rust.

Brake rotors is washable from oil, I really find a method to clean them completely. Works great. But for brakes pad - not. Oil penetrates into pads and they need to be recycled.Ive tried to boil them in the water, a little fire, same cleaning process as on rotors, but it works only 50% on contaminated brake pads.

I am scared, deeply scared by the high pressure, I wouldn't touch high pressure; water only free fall down, only gravity
@Fred_the_1996

I'd only use a garden hose at most, and no adapters! One exception to this may be the new bosch portable washer, which is basically only a glorified hose with the same pressure as a normal hose, except it has a water reservoir and a battery so it's portable. Oh, and you can also screw in a bottle of bike wash, like muc off, underneath the hose and it will spray foam all over your bike, so that's neat.

Actually the worst thing for bikes is sand. To which I found it a couple of days ago. I had sand in my crank shaft. Chain and cassette the grinding noise was horrendous. Mid ride strip down of crank just to keep going.

My bike looks this filthy after almost every ride. Except during June, July, and August. What is the liquid you shake the chain in? This is not something I have tried when cleaning my drivetrain.
