An account of an entire journey undertaken in 12703 Howrah Secunderabad Falaknuma Express. This was undertaken in mid August in the peak of monsoon which is evident from the vibrant green surroundings and rivers filled with water up to the brim across the entire journey.
Major crossings include Steel Express at Kharagpur outer, Thiruvananthapuram Shalimar Express, Puri Howrah Shatabdi, SSPN Howrah Express, Yesvantpur Duronto, Falaknuma Express on the Brahmani Bridge, Bhubaneshwar Rajdhani, Vishakha Express and the Amravathi Express among others.
A 7:25 am departure from Howrah (led by a red Santragachi WAP-4) means one gets to see the entire Howrah Berhampur stretch in daylight which is a delight for any nature lover. There are as many as 7-8 major rivers that cut our way as we move south past the lush green Eastern Ghats through coastal Odisha. One can spot Rivers Damodar, Rupnarain, Suvarnarekha, Brahmani, Mahanadi and Kathajodi among other smaller ones.
After a timely departure from Howrah, we mode steadily past Santragachi (where Vikramjeet Maitra can be seen in a red shirt), past its locomotive shed holding the red hot stallions (WAP-4s) towrads Kharagpur. We skip Mecheda and Panskura at sedate pace and meet the legendary Steel Express at Kharagpur outer with a WAM-4 from TATA itself.
The Kharagpur Jajpur stretch is negotiated well at MPS with us moving at 110 kmph. Skips of Basta, Rupsa and Soro happen enroute. The Eastern Ghats come real close to us at Dhanamandal, post Jajpur, and soon we cross the Bhubaneshwar Rajdhani towards New Delhi.
Cuttack and Bhubaneshwar later, we experience a spell of heavy rain at Khurda Road. A 20 mins technical halt at Khurda enables us to enjoy the rain and soak up the atmosphere. Post Khurda, we cruise through the southern parts of Odisha, past the gigantic Chilka ta Khallikot and come across even larger rainfall while entering Berhampur some 20 mins late.
Please stay tuned for PART 2 for the run till Secunderabad through the Deccan Plateau led by twin Kazipet Diesels.
