Just came across this video. What a detailed and thoughtful presentation of each axe. It saddens me to have come across the tragic news of your passing. Sounds like you were a fantastic gentleman.

I have a Mini Hatchet, a Hunters Axe and a Scandinavian Forest Axe. The mini hatchet is used for roughing out wood for carving, chopping kindling and dog food preparation. The handle is too short to get a decent swing, if it was longer, one could get that little head really moving , greatly increasing its usefulness . The hunters axe is useful for cutting up deer etc. Splitting the carcass down the spine and the rounded poll certainly helps punching off the hide when skinning cows but isnt so good when trying to knock in a nail. It is a handy hatchet. I keep it in my truck for emergencies. Bur unless you are a successful hunter I'd recommend you purchased a Wildlife axe or a Small forest axe . The Scandinavian Forest Axe is brilliant, it is certainly the best all round axe I have ever used. Easy to use , easy to carry on a back pack . Great for both home and camping. The steel on all these axes is superb, easy to sharpen and stays sharp under hard use , I have never managed to roll or chip an edge on the hardest bone or wood . The axe head sheaths could be made of better leather and with a thicker welt , to stop the blade cutting around the side and tearing out the rivets.

My first Gransfors Bruks was the Mini Hatchet, and I loved it at first sight and touch, it is truly a thing of beauty and practicality. Some years on, a Wildlife Hatchet joined my Mini, and I was really quite taken with it, then after about five years, a Small Forest Axe made it a trio! Like with my Mini, I immediately took to my Wildlife Hatchet and SFA, and in the hand each felt just about perfect, with the SFA feeling quite amazing really. I've toyed with the thought of getting the Outdoor Axe for some time but am not sure it'd be that different to my Wildlife Hatchet. I'm certain that I wouldn't be disappointed in it. I also have a GB Viking Neck Knife which is gorgeous.

Thank you so much for all the effort and this comprehensive video. I have four of these in the pile there and was looking at a fifth, I will now get the Scandavavian Forest Axe, as well. I never realized the small forest axe and the hunters axe were so close in size and dimensions, with some axe head and handle variations they are very similar. The top views for thickness was also very helpfull. What a very nice video. ❤

Another Axe you might want to consider having in your store's collection is the Gransfors Bruk "Ray Mears" Wilderness Axe. Made by Gransfors Bruk but designed by the British bushcrafting survivalist, Ray Mears. This axe is a cross between the 430 Scandinavian and the 420 Small Forest. Its size is perfect for backpacking in to a campsite and using as a veritable kaleidoscope of bushcrafting operations.

Thank you for this, it helps me a lot. I have a Small forest axe for bushcraft and camp and i love it. Now i moved in a new place with my family, and i need to process fire wood and deal with a small forest. (Lucky me !). I want to go with Gransfors , the quality, and the beauty of the tools i use is important to me. I will come back on this video to help me deside between the models i really want ( Felling axe, large splitting axe or splitting maul... ) I'm in europe so i will order in europe, but thank you again for this video, it is really helpfull.

the finest Axes in the world barr none, and yes im one of those people with a 420 and 430 hanging on the back of the cabin door. 70miles west of Fairbanks trail blocked with a cluster of wind fall amounting to 4 x birch 6-10" wound in with 2 x spruce 12" and 14" these were across tight trail laying mid trunk. Got off snow-go and realised i had forgotten the 550XP oh well out came the 430, the scene above meant i had to go trough either side to alough machine past, wow i kid you not 25 mins later done! It would be interesting to list prices and update them about every six months. Also telling about the steel used in these axes would be a bonus. It would be nice to see a video on how these axes are made. As I understand it Gransfor Bruks bought out Wetterlings. It was once said that tbe two companies produced the identical quality hatchets and axes. You might also consider items of interest to collectors. I know that Gransfors makes throwing axes and the popularity of the sport is increasing in the US and around the world. You might interview an axe thrower and get him to give demonstrations. Same thing with knife throwers. I would also interview highly respected survivalists on what they would consider to be the best all around hatchet or axe for survival . Thank you so much for showing your axes and explaining a little about them . I have just subscribed and given you thumbs up . God bless and take care ! A friend always !

I have to split dry firewood which is about 1 ft long and has been already cut into smaler pieces right when it was harvested. So the biggest peaces (few) are maximal 1 squarefoot. I split them with a normal axe one handed, no splitting shape. Which splitting axe would be the best for the job.

Great video! I’m looking for a axe/hatchet to use for camping. Nothing too large because I’ll be hiking in. Basically it is used to make kindling and smaller pieces for a small fire, yet big enough for other uses as well. Which axe would you recommend? I’m thinking outdoor but I’m looking for suggestions. Thanks👊

I love my Gransfors hand hatchet for splitting kindling, shaving tinder and carving. It fits nicely in a backpack too. If you want a little more leverage, I think the wildlife hatchet would be a great choice too. Same head as the hand hatchet but the handle is a little longer.

I have the Gransfors Bruks Mini Hatchet 410, the Wildlife Hatchet 415 and the Small Forest Axe 420. If I was physically carrying stuff I'd prefer the Mini Hatchet or the Wildlife Hatchet. I absolutely love my Mini Hatchet, and its my personal favourite GB tool, however its all down to your preferences. I'm realistic enough to appreciate the capabilities of the Wildlife Hatchet over the Mini, but I still love to bring the Mini. Either of the GB tools, with a good saw makes for a very capable duo.

I’ve been looking at hatchets/small axes for a few weeks now trying to decide which one to buy. I want it primarily for wood splitting as I have a decent saw for sawing logs into splittable sections, and a fixed blade for kindling and finer work. I started out looking at the wildlife hatchet but transitioned into considering either the small forest axe or the splitting hatchet. Which would you recommend? I don’t want anything bigger because I’ll be bringing this on hiking/fishing trips.

These comparisons would be far more useful if they also included the differences between handles in terms of shape and length. Also the shape of the blades - the Carpenter's Axe has a cut out under the head in order to facilitate a grasp for doing more close up and detailed work. This axe's blade is straight rather than curved also for cutting reasons. The differences between the various axes are important and a lot of thought has been put into them. To give another example, the Hunter's Axe has a rough handle to prevent slipping because of blood. The world DOES indeed "need to know" and a seller of a range of axes should know the reasons for these variations.
