I wouldn't pass too much heed on these tournaments in the run up to Olympics, Chinese team are likely laser focused on Paris and using these tournaments as experimentation / practice before the real thing in Paris. But Fan will need to improve for Olympics he is on a dip in form past while. If he doesn't improve WCQ is almost a shoe in for the gold.

Ma Long isn't more consistent than Fan. The prime ML was more SKILFUL and fitter than Fan.

Ma Long was destroyed 3-0 in round of 32. Ma Long also was beaten more decisively by Patrick Franzesca. Fan. Zhendong always fights till the end. Ma Long simply becomes depressed when he is losing.

The ranking would have been based on the last one to two years, not so relevant this close to Paris. Trust me Chinese team couldn't give a hoot about Saudi smash. It's utterly irrelevant to them. Their funding from Chinese government over the next four years (and their broader prestige) is 100% based on bringing gold medals back to China in Olympics. They are laser focused on the Olympics right now.

Simply put, the Chinese are playing literally in every single competition regardless of the importance. Too many games, will eventually tell on any player...

Fan lost this because he uses the incorrect strategy. He should be attacking centrally, not sideways. But as usual, the Chinese team always do this before the Olympics.
