Bill Quirk discusses the differences between defensive ammunition and training ammunition. Full metal jacket (FMJ) ammunition is typically less expensive, reliable, and ideal for training purposes. Hollow points (HP) are typically more expensive, accurate, reliable, and ideal for defensive purposes due to the way it expands upon impact to cause damage. Watch now to learn everything you need to know about FMJ and HP ammo.

I stockpile mostly fmj. Yes the hollow point does cause more damage.... But alot of people are under the impression that they won't do the job and stop the bad guy. That is not true at all. Also being able to punch through barriers can be a plus. Idk about everyone else but after I draw and fire once or twice im getting OFF THE X and looking for cover while continuing to fire. FMJ also feeds better. My primary mag is loaded w HP. My secondary mag is FMJ as I'm probably gonna be punching through barriers

Great informative video! Couldn’t expect less from BDU. I do tons of ballistic gel testing with different loadings. (I’ll be uploading these videos at the start of next year). I’ve known several people to carry ball rounds and have converted a couple of those over to JHPs after I showed them my results. The ones I find that are stuck on carrying ball rounds are prior military because ‘if it worked over there it’ll work over here’. Aside from that; I always recommend Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot, Winchester Ranger-T, and Hornady Critical Duty. In that order. These round are not only proven in labs but on the streets as well. And just because those are the top performing rounds doesn’t mean they’re the best in each caliber. For example, my test on the federal HST showed me that it can’t handle the sheer speed of the .357 Sig. jacket separation in almost each testing(due to the non bonded bullet) which resulted in that round being taken off my preferred carry load list in that caliber. Same with the Non bonded Ranger T in .357 Sig. with that caliber, Gold Dot is the way to go. The hot loading. Not the reduced penetration loading the FAMS utilized. I always remind people, just as you did today, to test your carry rounds in your carry firearm. What works in mine may not work in yours and vise versa.

Hollow points have their place and purpose but don’t deserve to be labeled the standard for defensive ammunition. Great video explaining the difference between FMJ rounds and HP rounds. Spot on with how different pistols chamber ball ammo and hollow tip ammo. You have to shoot each round through your weapon to see what works. Now, shooting targets at 25yds with a 9mm? That's 75ft. In a self defense scenario, we're talking more like 7yds or 21ft. Again, great video but if you're defeating a target at over 20ft in self defense, good luck in court. Just saying.

Big daddy Ken in Ohio here. firstly a good informative video. That said, and I promise you I intend no disrespect or sarcasm, Ive a question and a couple things to say. While we can all agree the potential for over penetration is there with an fmj round, I have yet to see a single documented example of an over penetrating round striking and innocent bystander simply because it was a fmj round. I think it fair to note that many hollow point rounds plug up with material and act as an fmj. But what I have seen is numerous examples of an innocent being hit with an errant shot, that is the shooter missed his intended target and hit something or someone he wasnt shooting at and this can happen with an hp or fmj. I think the fear of fmj ammo is way overblown and I also say it has defensive applications. It stands to reason if fmj is effective in offensive operations with the military it would be effective in defensive situations as well.

Most FMJ ammo can seriously injure a "bad guy" who's wearing Level 3 body armor, like James Holmes, the Aurora, CO theater shooter. Even if the round doesn't penetrate the armor, it can still hurt the assailant -- buying "more time" for a crowd of innocent people to flee the area.

Most people forget that even if you're wearing body armor, you still feel the energy of the bullet. A 9mm bullet travels at about 800 mph, and that is a lot of energy to stop over an area smaller than the size of a quarter.

How wrong about FMJ rounds all NATO rounds are FMJ and have kill more than ANY other type of projectile shape. I prefer FMJ rounds as they will go through walls if needed without deforming unlike ANY JHP that will deform. Remember not all targets are standing in the open and a well placed bullet is way more important. For home defense especially in a dark house a shotgun with 00 Buck is still the best weapon ask any police or military person like myself. Hell, a 22 round is a very devastating round as it bounces around once inside the target. DO LOTS OF RESEARCH and ask tons of questions!

After many years of listening to why this round and not this round, I have also learned through out my life time, is that criminals are species of opportunity! They will almost always wait for their victims to be in secluded places or very low traffic of other humans in order to assault or rob people. They will not hold you up at knife point or with any other weapon in a crowded area or shopping mall. So, that said, why would I really have to worry about over penetration of my ammunition? and hitting an innocent bystander, because their would not be one around. Also! You should never fire a weapon at anyone who has people in his background, that is just not done. You need to know when to stand down or wait for your opportunity to react to an assailant, because if he already has his weapon pointed at you, all you can do is comply and hope you may have an opportunity to draw your weapon and shoot. But, if you make the mistake of trying to go for your weapon, all he has to do is squeeze the trigger and boom your dead. So! I carry two JHP and Two FMJ in that order in all my Magazines, whether it's 380, or 9mm.

point of impact point of aim is the most critical choice witch is why i stay away from hyper ammo, not only is it not necessary and needlessly expensive it tends to change the point of impact to unacceptable levels. I would with out a doubt test my individual pistol or revolver with them until i find the ammo that is most performance consistent in terms of point of impact point of aim. My pistol shoots it's best with regular ol 124gr jhp ammo by sellior and belloit followed by the winchester white box jhp's. I tried civil defense hollow points in my bul armory sas 2 ultalight pistol and the poa/poi changed by nearly a foot, that's no good period, they are nasty and do alot of damage but they are horribly inaccurate in my edc pistol. The federal hst and speer gold dots change the poa/poi by mostly half that but the regular pressure rounds are nearly always within an inch any direction.

Most of this is presented very well. I would maybe adjust the term "autopsy" Generally that is reserved for the investigation of death on human remains by a pathologist or sometimes coroner. Necropsy would tend to refer to the same process on a non human. In this case it sounds like a dissection- or maybe more specifically a dissection for ballistic analyses. Since you are not investigating any sort of cause of death and it is not human remains- autopsy is really not the right term at all. Otherwise great content!

Whatever the caliber, I think hitting a bear with through put and stopping ammo is a reasonable argument? Go easy on me please, i cant get non condescending answers from people on this question.

Hollows are the way to go they’re safer for everyone else around. Fmj’s can fly though walls, hollows stop dead in the intended target

Because the lead is too soft it gets stuck in your barrel and could cause a bore obstruction worst case but generally just a pain clean

They should call hollow points insurance bullets, because you don’t really wanna pay for the neighbors kid. Without rule of law, full metal jacket all day long every day long. In this world of lawyers in which we live runaway don’t defend your life don’t shoot to defend your life run away throw your wallet in the air to them and as they catch it turn and run away

Full metal jacket goes through walls cars and doors and will still hit your target Obviously the fact that the hollow doesn't do that gives you less options when your life is on the line

A hammer wouldn't penetrate a grapefruit and hot your hand enough to hurt like hell ? My ass it wouldn't . Unless your using a rubber mallet or something similar . I mean just ask the comedian known as Galager ! a regular basic hammer would definitely go through the fruit and still carry enough energy to hurt someone on the other side of the fruit . Mortal Kombat .... Fruitality Hammer BONUS!!

At short distances, 5,56 may “overturn” after hitting drywall due to the weight and center of mass that makes the projectile unstable. So the 556 would not pierce but “slap” the target. Reassuring: at short distances
