In part ten of his Grand Tour, Brian Sewell is forced to go to a Grand Ball during the Venice Carnival. Filled with rage and loathing he embarks on obtaining a costume for the ball and then suffers the indignity of sharing space with "fat old lesbians" and a very un-lovely Casanova. Unfortunately Brian then puts his foot in it the next day by insulting his hosts during lunch.
The full series is available to buy on DVD as 'Brian Sewell's Grand Tour' in the UK or 'Brian Sewell's Grand Tour of Italy' in the United States.

"It's a freak show." Excellently said. I've always liked Brian Sewell's eloquent honesty. Requiescat in pace.

RIP Brian. A natural wit. One of the funniest men I've seen in the English-speaking world. A great loss and greatly undervalued by the media. Irreplaceable.

there's more to him than that - he was the son of a London prostitute, his father committed suicide when she didn't agree to his abortion. He always worked on a very average wage for art dealers, often spotting hidden masterpieces a mile off but somehow other more greedy people got the credit. He has worked in Brixton prison teaching art history. He dares to speak the truth about art and education and has today been sidelined by the Evening Standard for not cow-towing to the establishment mob.

So direct and forthright it makes you weep. And only Brian could get away with this kind of directness with his dignity intact. One lives in the hope of becoming a memory. Salutant te.

Brain spoke about this series at a talk he gave recently. He said the show he wanted to make and the one that was actually produced were two entirely different things. I'd love to have seen the version he intended. He's a wonderful speaker, intelligent, incisive and humorous, and anyone who believes he is a snob just because of the way he speaks is wrong.

I adored this series and Brian. I was disappointed to read what a lash up this series was in Brian's Autobiography though. A funny and inspiring man who inspired me to broaden my knowledge of art and architecture and first ignited my love of Italy. One of the last of the old school.

Perfect accent! A charming decoration of commentary upon the Venice Carnival. Perfect enunciation! Perfect personification of absolute perfection. Mr. Sewell speaks English with a wealth of pulchritudinous vowels, dipthongs and lexis. It is a great pity that his type is a dying breed in Britain. He expounds various theories in the most charming accents! Nothing can exceed his fine aristocratic bearing with which he carries himself on every occasion.

There you are. You have been treated to Brian Sewell at his most acidic This was not his usual mode, as he was invariably charming and eloquent. I knew him reasonably well from long discussions going round and round the round pond in Kensington Gardens or the Serpentine. I lived in London and he was not exactly my neighbour in Kensington but lived in proximity so our paths crossed frequently. Always very interesting to engage in conversation and discussion. May he rest in peace.
