ya dump it in a long pile all on one side and then work it all over to the other side?! Let the dump truck spread it w/spreader chains on trail gate and the grader finish it.

Spreading with dump truck tailgate would cause too much chaos and gravel would be win-rowed over edges of road. Grader wouldn’t have control of linear grade. Also, grader needs to Angie blade and pull out of just enough to get roller going even compaction one one side of roads while he whittles away at other side. You can’t roll gravel evenly the sand if it hasn’t been bladed out by grader. Gravel needs to be contacted in layers as it’s built up

Bottom dump trucks would be more practical

I think the reason they do this is compaction. Spread a level, then compact with the roller. Spread a level……..

@ the best, - Oh they sometimes do, - depends whether the "Elite" are going to use the road or not. The total lack of street lighting being installed suggests they weren't. To my mind that gravel should have been watered and rolled in every 4 to 5 inches, instead they just 'spread' it straight onto hard compacted soil, - not the best way to put a 'sub-base' down, (or type 1 as we call it). They might put a couple of inches of Asphalt on top, - but not always, (they haven't many pavers).
