I own two of their laptops and go back and forth on whether to buy a Thelio when the time comes to upgrade my desktop. Their cases look great and I appreciate their stellar support, but the price premium is pretty tough to swallow versus building. With laptops, there isn't a build option so their lineup is a lot more compelling there. Looking at the interior of the machine, you have to marvel at the thought and time involved in that kind of custom work. On the other hand, it makes me worry a bit about how easy it will be to work on over time. I'm currently running a Dell XPS desktop, and it's a fine machine other than the noise under load. However, I would never buy another one because of the non-standard parts that Dell incorporated into the system making it difficult for me to improve upon it. While I understand that System76 is a strong supporter of right-to-repair and is using standard computer components aside from the case and the thelio IO controller, I still can't help but feel that custom cutting IO on the back and so tightly packaging the cooling solution goes against that repair philosophy. Given their target market, I would suggest that they make sure to keep their cases sufficiently universal for hot swapping hardware to satisfy tinkerers. At the moment, that makes me lean toward building with a nice case like the be quiet 802 solid panel, but we'll see when the time comes.
@BitmapFrogs
@BitmapFrogs 3 жыл бұрын
if you look at their manuals (theiy're posted online) accessing the interior and changing parts is not too complex, but I do agree the custom cutout for the io while looking very nice, means if you ever need to swap your mobo down the line you'll have to dremel it

The way to put USB ports at the front of a tower, but without detracting from a clean front design, is really easy: Put them on the top of the case, not the front face itself. But yeah, you’re going to need some hubs - possibly sticking them on top of the tower, anyway.

I'm late to this party, but the way I solved the problem of the USB ports on my (non-System76) rig being in the rear is... I turned it around. It does mean that I have to reach back to hit the power button, but to me, that's not a big deal.

I just bought a Galago Pro with the 11th Gen i7 and NVIDIA GTX 1650. My timing was perfect as the semiconductor shortage has now made the i7 and NVIDIA graphics unavailable for this model. Yesterday, the price also went up by $100 for the base model. Of the seven or so models of laptops offered by System76, only two are available for purchase - if you are willing to settle for an i5. I definitely see a Thelio desktop in my future (I'm practically lusting for one) once the semiconductor shortage is over. Right now, I'm just happy to get my Galago Pro configured the way I wanted it. Thanks for a great review!

Another option for the USB problem can be purchasing a monitor stand with USB ports. There are some pretty nice ones out that even include wireless charging for cell phones.

Maybe instead of putting USB ports on the front of the case, they could work them onto the top of the case towards the front. I have a cheap-o Rosewill FBM-X2 MicroATX case that has a flush front with no IO or drive bays, and the buttons and USB ports are at the top, and still gives you room for an AIO. I think its a pretty sleek design, and I picked it up because it reminded me of the Thelio case. I really wanted to buy a System76 Thelio a few past month or so, but elected instead to build my own and over the past month and a half, have been swapping out and flipping CPUs and Graphics Cards, and finally settled on a Ryzen 2600 and RX 480. But I still love System76 and use Pop_OS as my daily driver due to the love and dedication the team puts into their hardware and Pop_OS. I have the same, dual monitors and one is an ultrawide, the other in portrait mode. So, when I game, I usually tend to run in some form of windowed mode, it usually makes it easier to switch around between apps in the background. Games in wine/proton can act up if they go fullscreen, either opening up in the wrong monitor, or messing up my display resolution and layout, or refusing to allow keyboard/mouse input if I super key out of it, so I leave it in windowed 1600x900 as the sweet spot to play in a window and flip between other applications randomly as well. I know System76 really prefers their NVIDIA cards, and as long as they support them with updates and drivers, that's perfectly fine with me. Just like how you spoke to them, and they fixed a driver/config setting on the spot. Who provides fixes that fast. That's insane. Perhaps in the future, they can also support AMD's amdgpu-pro drivers, getting OpenCL to go on my RX 480 was a bit of a hassle, and I would love to see a simple click and go solution for it.

You could always run a cable to a hub placed conveniently. I used to do this back when cases didn't have front ports and with a few cases that had broken front ports. It worked pretty well for me.

I have the base Thelio - 5900X, 32G ECC RAM, 2TB Gen 4 NVMe Rocket Sabrent and a basic graphics card. Super quick, but not expandable so I may actually rebuild with new mobo/case. Fan noise is rather high on this too - more so than my old WildDog and also more noisy than hy home server build. So maybe fan noise is their achilees heel? I own several System76 products. Good machines. Good luck with your new workstation.

I'm considering a purchase from System76 exactly for the same reasons you got one, and KDEnlive is my video editor of choice as well. The USB ports in the back is a real bummer, though, so I haven't clicked "buy" yet. A question for you: Is there any reason I couldn't replace Pop OS or Ubuntu with the distro of my choice, or do you think I'll have to stick with the OS it comes with?

Geekbench score, 1372, 25051 I love this machine and PoPoS! I have 2960x with RTX3090 (i tried for the 3080 first. Intel X540 10gb Ethernet card works great. Quad channel memory speeds it up 20% at 128GB. The NVME is so fast. I put in a enterprise grade Samsung 256GB SATA drive with 2x128GB partitions for swap and it works great, set up to swap only when it runs out of RAM, but its still very fast even swap! A $30 ADATA 800 256GB drive to boot for backup management. Nothing but rendering slows it down at all, and it beats everything except the TR 3970X or 3990X at that.

Been lusting for it, but I was always curious to say what the insides looked like. I think I'll pass. I respect the heck out of System76 but some of the non-standard ways of putting the internals together is going to be a repairing nightmare for most people. I'd rather get a standard tower with better ventilation than that. Thanks for showing the internals, Jay. If I was stupid rich, I'd buy it though, with these complaints still standing, because that beast looks so so so good.

Wonderful, thanks!... For professionals like you this is indeed a wonderful machine!... For all the other regular home or small office folks out there, I'm getting in love with those small mini PC's that are popping out there!... I'm actually "dating" such a AMD powered one for later this year... Sooner rather than later they will improve to the high professional lever, and then no more place for those huge towers around our desks forever!... RIP huge towers; you did your job nicely, but now your are just a good riddance!... :) Meanwhile, it seems that System76 didn't abuse on those stupid RGB lights inside and outside the case for that machine, or did they? Permit me just a question and a suggestion for a new video: Printers on Linux. I feel there is a lack of current updated information on that, especially if one, like me, wants a general purposed home printer. What's your recommendations for now? Have a nice day!...

HP printers work really good on Linux. I've used the Deskjet 2600, a pretty cheap one, and worked out of the box, plug & play if you are on an Ubuntu based distro. In Arch you have to install hplip but then it works great. Another experience that I've had is with a Canon PIXMA G3110 that my parents bought this month. In Arch Linux (my mother's PC distro) I can't make it work at all. I've found some .deb and .RPM drivers but I'll have to try to build the drivers from source on that Arch installation. I'll tell you if I can manage to do that.
@Benjamin-lh6dq

Update: I've managed to install the drivers, someone uploaded it to the AUR and I've used it. Then I searched info about CUPS to do the printers config and it worked.

I have HP Deskjet printers, a Brother Laser Printer/Scanner MFP, and an old Canon Pixma inkjet MFP connected to my MX Linux system. The HPLIB for Linux is fully supported - works well. The Brother Laser printer works OK via CUPS and a couple of Linux Scanning utilities. Even for scans of 2-sided originals via the document feeder. But the Brother MFP's Windows utilities have a nicer user interface, and more flexibility for printing odd paper sizes etc. The Canon Pixma 8610 I have is difficult to use under Linux, especially for scanning. I run a Windows virtual machine for a few functions that only run via Windows apps, so I can use the Canon utilities there if need be.

I wouldn't be able to use it if they went that direction. I play around with rolling releases on VMs, but there is just too much risk on a production machine. I don't really see much benefit of Arch unless you're using some pretty niche software that is only in the AUR. Pop has very recent kernels so hardware support is good, the desktop environment is updated about every six months, and there is good support for flatpak and snap for recent applications. Beyond AUR, I don't really see what Arch would provide for a pre-configured operating system.

Take all the compnents out and put them in a Corsair 5000x RGB case I'd reformat it and put a pirated copy of Windows 7 on it. Then you'd have a banging system that wasn't trying to pretend to be an SGI Onyx From a PC builder perspective, nothing makes me cringe more than rear IO that isn't just a big rectangular hole where anythign int he world can come out, instead of individually cut holes that you can never upgrade with a later motherboard. I dont' even use those little rectangular custom panelst hat come with the motherboards, they just restrict airflow and I tosst hem away. More likely to cut your fingers than anything else. As a blind person, plugging in any USB anything in the back is a PITA, but the solution is a USB male to female extender cable and a 5 port USB hub on the other end to locate yoru usb hub anywhere you want on your desk. Repeat with as many as you want.

So what is up with this custom firmware on the motherboard and custom firmware on an IO daughterboard. First of all, WHY? And is this going to prevent you from running any other operating system on the hardware. The motherboard, probably not, but if there are only Thelio drivers for the io daughter board... yeah, might be a major strike against it. You should be able to throw it away though and just use the IO on the dmotherboard, in fact, it makes you wonder.. why they need a custom IO daughterboard for any IO at all.. it should be all otu the back on the motherboard. I'd definitely aprt it out and throw away all the value added System76 work as adding no value at all, and just recycle the parts into a new build. I'm not saying I wouldn't give PopOS a fair chance... I'd do my best to get everything I needed to run under it... Steam, Paintdotnet, my games, OBS studio, Audigy, Sony Vegas Movie Editor, etc. If I could get all my WIndows programs to run under it and the UI didn't drive me crazy, I'd be like hey great, goodbye WIndows! But if it couldn't yeah, like every other user, I'm fleeing back to WIndows where stuff jsut works.

My advice: stick to software. Saying things worked for you, is not really a review. Besides, what is "linux" about these devices? You forgot to mention aspects like the open EUFI Whatever the OS is which is installed on a computer doesn't really matter. It's still a rather generic mainboard, CPU, GPU, RAM etc. If you want to talk about "Linux" desktops or laptops, I strongly feel you should mention what makes them "Linuxy" (otherwise love your other software related videos, but slow sometimes but informative and well planned out)
