All items used and the estimated cost are listed below and every step is time stamped for you to use as a guide. #HowToRoof
In this video, like our other videos, we are showing you step-by-step how to tackle a full roof repair project on your own without having to pay a roofing company and saving you hundreds of dollars. For this roof repair, an expected total cost from a reputable roofing company can cost anywhere from $700.00 and more. Here we will be removing asphalt shingles, the plywood decking below it and we will show you how to reinstall it.
This project is a roof leak that was caused by a defected plastic attic vent. We are also replacing a mushroom vent with a metal vent and we are also going to show you how to roof around this vent. It's a very detailed jam packed video and by far, the best roofing how-to video out there. Below you will find a list of the items and tools needed to complete this roof repair.
#AurumRoofing is available online at: aurumroofing.com/
Total Expected Material List and Estimated Cost:
1 (one) Bundle of matching color asphalt shingles
1 (one) 7/16in plywood OSB decking
1 (one) attic vent
1-2 (one to two) tubes of roof sealant
1 (one) 15lb felt
1 (one) 1/4in metal screws
1 (one) 5lb box of 1-¼” roofing nails
2”-3” Framing Nails
Estimated Total: $150-$185.00
Estimated Total Cost for this type of Roof Repair from a Roofing Company: +$700
Tools Needed:
Pencil, Hammer, Utility Knife with Hook Blade, Chalk line, Tape Measure, Flat bar, Recipitator Saw, Circular Saw, Caulk Gun, drill with proper drill bit. And as always, Safety First - Eye Protection and Gloves #diyroofing
Step # 1- 0:46 Pull roofing nails from the work area. Start 3 rows above the desired work area.
Step # 2- 2:09 Begin removing the needed roofing shingles from your work area.
Step # 3- 4:35 Remove any remaining fasteners from the work area including all roofing nails and plastic or metal caps.
Step # 4- 5:04 Locate studs/rafters. To predetermine your plywood cut.
Step # 5- 6:44 Use your claw bar to remove the framing nails from your stud line along your work area.
Step # 6- 7:44 Use your chalk line to mark the center of both vertical studs in your work area.
Step # 7- 9:00 Begin to cut your plywood. Make sure your saw depth is calibrated to the thickness of your roofs plywood.
Step # 8- 10:42 Install pre-cut plywood in the work area.
Step # 9- 13:00 Mark and cut out your circular cut for your attic vent.
Step # 10- 14:25 Install felt underlayment over your work area. Prepare for shingle install.
Step # 11- 16:20 Begin shingle install. Line up your new roofing shingles to the existing shingle pattern.
Step # 12- 24:52 Install 2 1-½” rubber gasket metal screws per side about 3 inches away from the flashing's edge.
Step # 13- 25:10 Apply roof seal on all areas where the old and the new asphalt shingles meet. Make Sure you apply seal over the old nail holes.
That's it guys and gals! You did it! You are all done with the roofing part of this small project. Now, go inside and work on your ceiling. Again remember to like and subscribe for more roofing how to videos. See you on the next one!

Genius!! The extra effort with starter strips and sandwiching should prevent leaks that happen so often around vents, rather than relying on cement that ages long before shingles do. I am a licensed general contractor and gained knowledge from this!!!

Excellent video. VERY thorough and perfect pace. I do not like the videos that move too fast and skip over details because they're second nature to the contractor. I did this today. The installation was pretty easy thanks to this video! Thank You! The hardest part was taking the old shingles off. The shingles in your video seem to pull apart quite easy. Mine were bonded together. This made pushing it up and getting to the nails quite a pain. It was hard work but I managed to teach myself how to pry apart the shingles without tearing the shingles on the uphill side. A learning experience. I would like to see you do a video on how you separate welded/bonded shingles. Thanks!

LOVE this video. Looking forward to checking them all out! Not suggesting there is fault in the video when i say -> screws are great for plywood. Ive found better at correcting for uneven studs/ joists. Firms up entire roof, imo in a good way but i could see how maybe faint wiggle from nails was needed to not crack interor drywall. Also holds well to beeswax or tar, and easy to dip and zip. easy to push below surface and fill, and still easy to remove, vs covering nails.

Dude this is a great great video! I will emphasize the WEATHER WARNING you gave. I did the exact thing you said NOT to do and paid for it… fortunately the water that came in was over concrete in a small once before garage/turned into a work room and I was super lucky that the entire house is empty when it happened cause it is in the middle of being sold so luckily the storm was nice enough to only occur over 10 hours but that was enough time to put in a good bit of damage. And today I’m back to do it right and stress free!! Thank you for your effort in making these videos on top of being a reputable roofer man! I’m a handy man of sorts, but I’ve jumped on every project I’m giving and try my damn hardest! Honestly about 80% of my clients have been more than satisfied and I’m striving to learn and get better at every trade I can! So hopefully within the next year or two I can say, 100% of my clients are content and willing to spread my name and with enough time and practice, I’ll be able to start making how to videos like you and many other awesome people on KZfaq ! I wish to join the family and community of trade work/youtuber!

Also....the guy that inspected my house prior to purchase, said that the roof shingles were very high quality (he referred to it as a "35 year roof"). He also said the roof's quality is what protected the house from serious damage because it was a rental property for years, and neglected in many ways in regard to maintenance. Please consider doing a video on the shingles themselves. I know Home Depot sells them. But what is your opinion on where to purchase them, the types, sizes, colors, etc. In other words, when you do a job on an older home, how do you go about matching the roof's current shingle quality, type, size, color, etc. Thanks, brother. Subbed.

EXCELLENT VIDEO! More closeup shots, e.g., when cutting the shingles vertically, would be be great. Paint the metal parts of the vent (two coats top and bottom) before installation to prevent rust overtime. Need to tell the kind of utility knife used to cut the shingles, hooked (cutting top side of a shingle) or straight (cutting bottom side of a shingle) blade. List all tools used at the beginning of the video, including what can kind roof caulk and roof adhesive used. And hold the camera still 🙂

Thank you for an excellent, informative and easy to follow video. Do you have videos on how to repair termite infected rafters, joist and sill plates bolted to a concrete belt course in the attic?
