FULL ROUTE VISUAL | Stagecoach Yorkshire Route X10 - Leeds to Barnsley | 10663 (YX66 WDF)

Its route visual time again! In this video we take a virtual trip on the X10 one Summer Saturday morning at the front seat of Stagecoach Yorkshire ADL Enviro400MMC 10663 from Leeds Coach Station to Barnsley Interchange. The route itself spends the first half of the 45 minute trip on the M1, coming off early to serve Darton and the edge of Staincross before running past the Stagecoach Bus Depot into Barnsley centre. At current this route operates hourly and uses a mix of standard double and single deck buses having previously been a 'Stagecoach Express' and 'Stagecoach Gold' branded service!
I hope this will be interesting to some and provides a sense of adventure from the safety of the living room. I apologise about the sunlight as that can't be helped and would like to ensure to everyone that this was recorded at the beginning of September.

This decker looks like it keeps up with the motorway traffic pretty well. Guessing it hasn't been governed to something stupid like 50mph, like a lot of Stagecoach stock.

I never knew Leeds and Barnsley were close enough that a bus route serves them.

It's smaller than the distance between Halifax and Leeds on the 508 you know.

Well mileage wise Leeds is closer to Halifax but the 508 route takes a few de-tours so takes 90 minutes at busy times compared to the X10s 45 minutes that is more miles but goes direct on the M1 mostly

I’d prefer the train. I’m surprised a bus service like this has been put on after the former X32 was taken off following the introduction of the then new Sheffield-Leeds limited stop service via Barnsley. Who is going to use the bus when the train does it in half the time?

I see your point but you'd be surprised. With cheaper fares than the train and better reliability than Northern rail this route has really done well. Alongside of through ticketing people can travel on their local route then use the X10 to Leeds on one ticket, plus it gains a fair few customers in Darton as can be seen in the video

@@AndMoreCentral Let me guess; are most passengers so-called “twerly pass holders”? The thought just occurred to me because they can travel for f* all on the bus, but not on the train. They stopped freebie travelling on the train about five or six years ago and it didn’t go down well at all. There were protests left right and centre, and I remember having a brief but firm exchange of words with a few of them in Barnsley. One asked me to sign their petition all smiling and happy, but that rapidly changed when I flatly refused! “West Yorkshire pensioners pay; you can too!” I walked off leaving them slagging me off. When it was realised there was no direct bus between Barnsley and Leeds, and changing in Wakefield was taking around two hours, this service was probably the answer. I know Northern Trains aren’t perfect, but at least you can get a refund or a free ‘go anywhere ticket’ if your journey is disrupted.

You'd be pleasantly surprised by the lack of pass holders that use the X10, in fact its rather rare to find any utilising the the route as a daytrip service. This route functions very well with people who live on the route/on an adjoining Stagecoach route and work in Leeds with an additional added in a morning and evening rush hour in the normal world to increase space. On weekends this route is filled with primarily families who utilise the cheap family ticket to do a day trip whilst night out revellers utilise the extra late night workings back to Barnsley, so much so that post-launch the coaches used were ditched on weekends been permanently replaced by double deck buses from route 66. Thats just from my observations since the service launched nearly 3 years ago now.

whats happened to the coaches that used to run on it

The coaches were swapped with Gold Scania Enviro 400s from Oxford. The coaches were transferred to other Stagecoach depots around the UK, then due to the lockdown the passenger numbers decreasing massively they decided to put Enviro 300s on this route and exchange the Gold Scanias for regular Stagecoach Beachball ones from Merseyside which I think at the time was a good idea. It's mostly ran by ADL Enviro 300s, an odd Scania e300 and an e400mmc. The regular Beachball Scanias that were swapped with do busier routes.

@Robin Bus Videos you've saved me a job aha. Yep the coaches got split with one going to Canterbury and the other two went to Scotland with one been the first coach in the new livery. Its a shame the Gold E400s went to Merseyside but they weren't practical at Barnsley so were never going to last sadly. Once things go back to normal by this summer the route should see a steady allocation of E400MMCs again, probably 10661/2/3
