Water puppetry is a Vietnamese tradition that dates back to the 11th century, when it originated in the villages of the Red River Delta in northern Vietnam. Today's Vietnamese water puppetry is a unique variation of the ancient Asian puppet tradition. The puppets are made of wood and then painted. The performances take place in a waist-high pool. A large bamboo pole supports the puppet underwater and is used by the puppeteers, who are usually hidden behind a screen, to control the puppets. This makes the puppets appear to move across the water. When the rice fields were flooded, the villagers would entertain themselves with this form of puppetry.
