As an engineer, I really appreciate the scientific approach you took to answering the questions. A few notes, though. You positioned the lights above the canopy to achieve a comparable light intensity. However, due to different technology efficiencies, what we really care about is normalizing by energy consumed. For example, the CFL draws almost twice the electrical power as the Migro, so it should have been positioned SQRT(2) = 1.4 times farther away. This way, the results would reflect what would happen given an equal energy input to the different technologies. Additionally, and I'm sure you know this, your color meter really isn't adequate for determining the spectral composition of those lights. I have access to a proper spectrometer through my work, so I tested a bunch of LEDs and CFL tubes out of curiosity. The first thing to note is that expensive "broad spectrum" white LED grow lights are absolutely 100% no different than regular white LEDs. Except for rare scientific specialty LEDs, all white LEDs use a ~460 nm blue base LED along with a fairly typical mix of phosphors. The color temperature is adjusted by changing the amount of phosphor used, and thus the ratio of blue to red/green light. This produces a very sharp narrow spike at 460 nm (blue), and a broad hump from 500 to 600 nm (green to orange). White LEDs don't produce much long wavelength red light (> 650 nm). I have yet to test it, however, given your results here, I believe the best combination will be "cool" white LEDs plus some amount of typical 650 nm red LEDs. This combination will produce Large amounts of blue for vegetative growth, an independently controllable amount of red, for flowering and chlorophyll production, as well as a small to medium amount of mid wavelength greens and oranges. The broad spectrum CFLs tested did produce fairly well balanced light spectra, however the inefficiencies of CFL make me recommended never using them over LEDs.

I've been growing with Cobbs exclusively for the past 7 or 8 years. When I switched from HID to Cobbs I literally got double the yield in the same space with the same wattage and you had denser plants generally

As a person who’s done the same experiment, I can say I’ve found the same results. Well done! and there is even more to “lack of green light” when it comes to taller plants. This is essentially taking a modern product and comparing it to five and then fifteen year old technology. Plurple lights absolutely do work but they are old and inefficient tech. They also make it notoriously difficult to see issues with your plants until the problem has reached a critical state. It amazes me that manufacturers still get away with charging premium prices for old inefficient tech when modern efficient full spectrum lighting can be had for the same money. Once again a great honest comparison that you are known for, thanks.

I have been using regular household LED bulbs for a couple years in a mix of 3500, 5000 and 6500k, with about 20 watt power draw per cubic foot of grow space with about 1600 lumens per sq foot about 6-15 inches above the plants. and have good results for starting seedlings, and for plants like lettuce, basil, green onions, cilantro, and even radishes. Fixtures, wiring, and bulbs cost a total of about $5 per sq foot of coverage. This year, I'm going to try to grow to fruiting stage both peppers and tomatoes and determine the cost when growing taller plants in more cubic feet. I am setting up a (dimmable) 260 watt power draw rack of LED tubes making about 30,000 lumens maximum with 4 foot tubes and hope to get about 18 square feet of 4-5 foot tall tomatoes and peppers. Cost is about $90 and I expect pretty good results. I will start at about 1/3 power and increase as the plants grow and I have to raise the lights. . For me, it is cost- I can supply double the wattage drawn with bulbs and fixtures at less than 1/2 the cost compared to quality dedicated 'grow' lights. It would take many years of use to end up with the cost of using the extra electricity to make up for the extra cost of any decent grow fixture on the market. If I provide more wattage or lumens, it seems like the plants will end up with enough light in the spectrums they need cheaper even if I end up with more of what they don't need. When you have a product that consumers can ADD to the regular lights they can buy anywhere to illuminate their homes, you will have a product that millions could buy. If you made a LED bulb that just filled the shortfall that 'regular' bulbs don't supply, you would have hit. Consumers don't need an expensive product to produce the same light a cheap shoplight produces. All we need is a light the produces what the cheap lights don't already produce. If I can use two double lamp 4 foot led fixtures from Walmart for $16 each, or even less on Amazon,and one 4 foot tube single lamp in between them to supply what the cheap lamps don't provide, , or to balance out the % of blue/red, I would pay for it. .

Hi Shane first off as an indoor grower I would like to say thank you for all you do! I had a quick question that maybe you can answer? I recently heard about a cmh bulb from sylvania called a powerball with an integrated ballast and I was wondering if you have ever checked these out? They are a 4000k light so definitely in the proper range for growth but I just have heard little to nothing about them in the grow world?

Chlorophyll A and B don't absorb green wavelengths (that's why plant matter REFLECTS green). BUT, secondary pigments like carotenoids DO absorb green, and pass the energy to the chlorophyll for photosynthesis. It's really cool to see that represented here in the grow tests! (It also means that eye watering purple light isn't necessary for intense growth, woohoo!)

It's all about scattered (photons traveling to many directions) and unscattered (photons traveling to mostly one direction) light. The less scattered it is (hard light that gives hard/crisp shadows), the better/denser the growth, even with much lower wattage. CFL's light is completely scattered, you can understand that by the soft/blurred shadows it makes.

What are your thoughts in LED grow lights for plants that need bright but INDIRECT light? My anthuriums are getting massive and my windows wont be giving enough as they get bigger. Would LED be safe to put over them and not be considered direct sunlight?

Awesome video! I just watched your video on lights and wish I had seen it a year ago. I’m growing tomatoes in a grow tent and just not having any luck. Last year I’m sure I overwatered and fed. I have three T5 fluorescent ballasts and have been using a mix of blue, red, and white. My electric usage has skyrocketed. Im thinking to change to led lights in these ballasts (with the help of a licensed electrician. What are your thoughts?

Please Test the "CF Grow" LED Light from Amazon 200w CXB3590 x2 . Ich think its fine. Good components :Cree cxb3590 / meanwell Driver / Weco connectors /ideal holders and 90 ° Lens.

This seems to suggest that, for flowering purposes, it could possibly benefit a setup that is using primarily MIGRO lighting by adding some additional, low wattage far reds.

I have a xeccon cannalights® smart3522k led grow light which comes witha bloom switch. I've read conflicting info about the use of the bloom switch during vegging of cannabis. I have a 2x2x4 foot tent. Any advice would be appreciated. :)

I use white LED Spots AND colored LED Spots at 10 inch distance AND several CFLs at four inch distance both in Ceiling AND Horizontal reflectors. Insignificant power consumption. I also use Fox Farm potting soil. Wishing I didn’t water so much. Watering is my nemesis. I have found CFL’s to as good as LEDs but need to be very close. They don’t produce heat so being close doesn’t hurt the plants.

Fall is comming and I have to bring some plants inside. I bought a lamp on a stand. I need to find a grow light with an E26 socket, no purple color, the plant (like a small tree) is in my living room. I bought a 16W grow light from Feit electric, but the output seems ridiculous, PAR is listed at 20. I dont' want to grow the small tree, I just want to keep it alive this winter. Does such a lamp exist with a E26 socket ?

How would the yield differ if you used a combo of 2 of the 3 lights. Would there be a difference?

Wow this is a little complicated for me as a new grower but appreciate the info. One thing I was curious about was you mentioned infra red as a measurement of heat and it doesn't contribute to growth? I thought that heat was directly linked to growth, more heat up to a point, equals more growth or better use of light to grow. Cold temps going the opposite way and stunting growth. I'm a noob so forgive my noobyness if this is a dumb thing to say.

I'm surprised the fluorescent didn't do as well as the Red/Blue led. Red light is low energy, you won't get much growth. Blue light is mixed with green the frequency green is reflected by plants - not used for photosynthesis. Even so, it outperformed the white light.

What if u “make” your own “full spectrum” grow light. I mean..get one led bulb 20 watt 6500k (1800 lumens), another same but 2700k and finally a third one same but 4000k. So three high power led bulbs next to each other?

Little question, I have 6 CFL 100w, 1600 lum. each on a 3 foot shade, 8 inches apart, I just got my red blue led 30 Watts ( 100w. equ.) at 1300 lum. I was thinking putting all together but don't really know if it will be helping my plants, so 6 CFL at 8-10 inches apart and between my red blue led, if somebody know please would be appreciated, thanks.
