2:05:02 Idk if Gray eventually figures this out, but the “jank doors” are “actual jank”, yeah, but they’re intentional jank, like clearing the level taking you to Underhalls. Read ahead for cool game trivia. The important thing to know is that Doom is actually a 2d game that which is projected into 3d from first person after the fact. Because of how Doom’s engine works, it is literally IMPOSSIBLE for two floors to exist with one on top of the other, like the basement does. What we see in the first version of the house is a very basic fix for this, where the player is actually teleported to a separate identical-looking location when they reach the bottom of the stairs. This new location is the one with the intractable door, hence why when he goes back up the stairs, it switches back to the fake closed door. Now, in the second version of the map, the transition between the upstairs and the downstairs is completely seamless, and I cannot stress enough how I have no fucking idea how they did that. But that was one of my first major WTF moments playing this map, and shows just how much the map maker knows their stuff.

I love the way this captures the feeling of being in a dream. "Yeah, I was wandering around my house, but I could tell something was off, so I went to my basement and it was all burned out, so I ran off and reached a stone, brutalist version of my house, and that was too much so I hopped into my bathtub to get back to my house but it was also an airport, etc. etc." sounds like you're describing a dream. It all connects in the moment but everything is subtly wrong when you focus on the details

I love that this isn't just a normal horror map made in Doom, but a map made SPECIFICALLY to fuck with people who play lots of Doom wads and Doom maps. Like the average person playing this, it's a scary map that does a lot of cool surreal stuff, but the more you know about Doom and GZDoom and Doom wads and mods the more uncanny the entire thing feels.

It's very much one of those things where people go and watch a video essay systematically detailing every easter egg and then get mad when you don't immediately find them yourself or you have any kind of reaction other than "wow chat that's so cool!" It's really funny because the essay in question makes note of the basement using linedef teleports to appear under the living room as an early giveaway that the mapmaker has more modding experience than their forum post implies and that something weird is going on, which rather amusingly seems to have been interpreted by a lot of its audience that the concept of DOOM wads having multiple floors is some dark voodoo magic thing that's never been done before and this map invented it.

Maybe it’s because I’m an art student, but the memes don’t bother me as much as they usually would. Considering the overall immersion and vibe and the fact that it’s a contemporary piece, I think it fits into the nostalgia. The discord sound isn’t for the sake of a meme, it’s just supposed to throw you off for a sec. Pumpkin Rick and Shrek aren’t the smoothest inclusions but they aren’t strong enough to pull me from the experience. It just feels like corrupted nostalgia to me, since those memes are a little old anyways. Artistic commentary, if you will. Perhaps referencing old inside jokes between the dev and his friend?

The Shrek inclusion is actually weirdly part of the story? If you use the command that lets you view a monster's name, it's called "childhood nightmare" so it seems as though the painting of Shrek on that wall gave the map creator nightmares and that segment is what the nightmare was like. Can't even say it's that odd, I remember having similar nightmares as a kid where a non-threatening figure suddenly gets VERY angry and violent

Not gonna lie, watching Gray try to figure out the secrets on his own really puts into perspective just how truly unintuitive some of them are to find. Especially the one with the mirrors not being active until you specifically interact with the attic mirror. Even more fucked was up how he had suspected the mirrors from the start and tried to enter the mirror after reading the text log but couldn't because that specific binary flag wasn't checked. It's understandable to see why he kept feeling that to progress he just had to keep wandering around because there were several instances where while he was wandering lost he was unknowingly triggering things to appear in places he'd already checked. Not to mention the hints are also mostly unhelpful.

I wouldn't really call the Shrek thing a joke, it's a nostalgic film and seeing it poorly drawn on a daycare wall is fitting, and for the backrooms, ok well that only happens when you cheat lol.

I feel like it's kinda unfair to call stuff like the inclusion of shrek purely just a "meme". I mean, this WAD is clearly inspired by Liminal Space type stuff, and that tends to have a connection with 2000's nostalgia, so shrek being in a daycare is very time-period accurate. Not to mention the shrek monster is called "Childhood Nightmare" in-game.

While I am disappointed that my favorite streamer is not also aware of the very cool and spooky book this WAD is partially inspired by, at least I can bathe in the smug superiority that I get all three of the epic funny references and was a fan of the book before the game was cool. I feel no shame.

i fell asleep watching this vod, and had a dream in which: my high school english teacher was teaching a class about creepypastas, except it was grayfruit actually teaching the class. and he did it in like an iceberg format, and i remember the second to last one had the melon launcher from plants versus zombies. i don’t remember a lot of them because i kept having to piss. like all the time was leaving to go piss. there was a little break during class and i went downstairs with some friends and we talked abt the creepypastas, and i also realized that we were in the music building at the university of texas. then we went back to class and i had to pee again, but this time a new bathroom opened up!! there was ladies, gentlemen, and then negtlemen! that had to be the nonbinary one (i am nonbinary), and sure enough there was this nonbinary kid there washing their hands. it was a nice big spacious bathroom too. i have seen different variations of this bathroom in my dreams since like first grade. then i went back to class and we were on the last, most scariest creepypasta!!! and the title looked like a metal band logo, and it said something like “Thor goes to school and becomes Thor going to school” and there was a gravestone with a green goblin mask on it. then i had to pee again, but i woke up. i immediately recognized that all the peeing in my dream must have meant i had pissed the bed. sure enough, i did.

Its a bit late cus 2nd vid is out. But like you said, unless you kinda know beforehand what kind of game it is or you can somehow draw the correct answer from the hints. Its common to just run circles and get nothing done. Its good to have some backseat gaming in this case. Got a friend who similarly run circles when hitting a dead end, had to kinda guide him trough my house.wad And as for the meme stuff? Its something relating to the overal theme of this game and something that happened in real life with the creator. The shrek entity is called 'childhood nightmares' in the game files. No need to explain there. Pumpking rick is something the creator's wife made, who are now divorced. The divorce is probably one of the reasons this wad got made. This also explains the heart at the end of the game

I know the vod is a month old but I'm gonna comment my most original brainwave and complain about how someone complained. This wad is so cryptic/obtuse that it took the internet days, maybe weeks, to figure out how to make progress. So don't worry that you couldn't find the answer in a half hour, the internet was stuck for days. Don't work up any salt over chat cringing, I'm sure that they played as well as you did and it only seems obvious to them because they watched some deconstruction video about the wad. (Speaking of videos about this wad, Powerpak's video on this wad is great. Pyrocynical made one too but he did too much; editing memes in and animated/voice overacted the journal entries)

big gray fan, but this stream was a little exhausting to watch. I know the game is really confusing and esoteric but the constant groaning and complaining about it was a little grating. its a good wad and you benefit from slowing down and remembering what you're doing, which def wasn't the playstyle here. Like he noticed the artifact pictures and even commented about the baseball and crayons mere moments after getting them, but then doesn't stop to think why its there. It clearly is changing when he does stuff linked to the pickups. Then he flies around to the same 5 empty rooms again and again. He keeps expecting it to be a linear experience when it clearly is not. Still watched tho 10/10

Part of the thing with this mod is that I don’t think individual people were meant to solve it alone. While you could do it with enough time, many of the hints are really vague and, in some cases, a bit contradictory. My guess is that it was meant to be a puzzle for the community.

Honestly it's probably for the best that grey saw the pics but didn't read the text. I think they're important for getting into the mood and having a better idea of what exactly is going on, but the text really lays it on thick that this is indeed a fictional supernatural story akin to a creepypasta, which honestly is a step too far and removes the mystique. or you know it's a meta narrative with a false/unreliable narrator but whatever it still comes across as a creepypasta, at least to me.

bit late to this but I feel like its really interesting to watch video essay's on it because you don't have to randomly fuck around for 3 hours getting mildly pissed off because the puzzles are hello neighbor levels of unintuitive. If you don't have to do any of the actual hard work then the game is really interesting but actually playing the game is annoying because it feels like doing the same thing over and over again to get to a seemingly random thing to happen so you can progress. Another thing that GrayFruit says is really on point as well because it really is like almost self referential with hints and such because if you know what to do and see the hint you go "oooh that's so smart and interesting" but if you don't know what's happening then its just like what happened with the painting where the hint is useless because it doesn't mean anything to the average player.

I've enjoyed your content for a couple years now and I mean no disrespect by this, but I kind of get the frustration between streamer and chat when it comes to backseating in this game and other puzzle games you've played in the past. Sometimes you might say "what do I do here" rhetorically, but then later, ask chat directly for instruction. So it might be unclear when to chat when it becomes okay to backseat. Certainly I don't mean to speak for streamer or chat as I'm not an active chatter. This is just what I notice as a vod watcher. Again, I love your content and mean no disrespect. Ok, I've "only" watched 3 hours out of the 3 hours and 33 minutes of the vod, but yeah I'm gonna have to strongly disagree with some of the people in the comments saying he's being too negative about it/being an idiot/whatever. As someone else has pointed out already, this wad (at least, as a complete experience) was intended to be played by a community, not a single person. So many of the paths are hidden behind completely unintuitive requirements with the intention that a handful of people will stumble upon it by accident and report it on the forum thread, spreading the knowledge of its existence. In this sense, he's very much playing it "wrong", because the creator didn't intend for every single secret to be found by one person... But I don't really think that the blame for that can be entirely placed on Jacob. He understandably wanted to try to go in blind, as he finds that _most forms of conventional media_ are better when experienced with minimal prior knowledge. And by going in blind, he had almost no way of knowing that it was not intended to be played alone. I think that the best way to experience it would be to go in blind initially, and then refer to a guide as soon as you feel like you're just bumbling around hoping something will happen, because that's more or less how it was intended to be played- You can find a lot of it on your own, but you can only truly understand it through communal knowledge.
