The SD40-2's are among the best units ever built. They'll likely ride the rails for many years to come.

Back in 1986-87, some Ohio government official claimed he stopped the railroads from bringing New York garbage to our landfills here in Ohio. I was driving a semi-truck for MidWestern Distribution. I made several round trips, from Detroit to New Jersey delivering pickup truck frames, then went to Long Island where I was loaded with bales of foul garbage, that were leaking nasty stuff out of the trailer. It was so bad that I had to drop the trailer on the side of an off ramp on the freeway, so I could go to a truck stop to fuel up and get something to eat. Then went to a landfill down around Cambridge, then to some other place to have the trailer pressure washed and sanitized. It still smelled bad.

One of the major benefits of EMDs is that they are not only very reliable, but when one does have an issue it is nearly always a pretty straight-forward and quick fix. That's why EMDs dominate out here in Australia hauling huge coal and iron ore trains through the harsh desert environment, they're just unbreakable. If you don't have a reliable locomotive you don't pull trains through an inhospitable desert when help is hours away. Contrast that environment with the harsh winters in Canada and the northern US and they work just as well. A classic example of the old adage "if it ain't broke"....

I guess 3424 can still help with dynamic braking on the downhill section?
@trainiax
@trainiax 3 жыл бұрын
An SD40-2 typically runs the prime mover at around notch 4 rpm in dynamic braking in order to power the traction motor blower, which is connected directly to the engine. As far as I know, that means if the engine is off, no dynamic braking.

AS A RAIL ENTHUSIAST THIS IS ONE TRAIN I'LL HAPPILY SAY "GOOD BYE TO"! This "rubbish" could be processed into pellets and then fed into an energy producing furnace to make steam for electrical generation. There is now TALK IN THE UK of mining old domestic refuse sites for the UsuaL 100 years of LIFE OF THESE TIPS for the raw materials deposited in them. You may see a crazy situation in the future where these very trains are returning the above rubbish to the origin city for pelletizing and recycling.

The fact they are asking it to pull the weight of the trash PLUS the weight of the dead engine its like they want two dead engines
@trainiax
@trainiax 3 жыл бұрын
Well, the weight of a dead SD40-2 is only about 50% heavier than a single loaded freight car. As long as they didn't go too far into the short-term amperage ratings of the traction motors, operating the remaining unit in notch 8 wouldn't really be much harder on it than having two units operating in notch 8 at a higher speed.

It had a dead engine, and the other was probably at max power to keep the train moving, besides would you really want 6000 tons of slowly rotting garbage sitting around in the hot sun, while you waited for a replacement loco and crew? I think not!
