I can relate about the broken spring. In 2010 I had taken a months vacation and had taken my mom along. We went from Phoenix to San Diego to Lake Louise and then back to Phoenix. I Montana going to Yellowstone we had to go through road construction where they were rebuilding the whole roadbed. Got to the KOA in West Yellowstone and stayed for the day. When we went to leave in the morning I noticed a scraping sound. Pulled into a turnout and found that the spring had broken/collapsed. So I turned around and headed back to the KOA and got another night. Started searching the internet and in the morning called a shop but it’s was going to be days before they could get to it. So I started calling RV parts store in Idaho Falls and found the spring, more later. Drove down and bought the parts and hit Harbor Freight for jacks, breaker bar and went to dinner. Returned to the campground and started changing the springs. The other side looked OK so I planned on doing that at home. When home and after changing them I realized that the new springs are 1 inch too long, so I got to change the springs again. Now on my current fifth wheel I’ve had to replace an axle that I bent in going the places I probably shouldn’t have taken it. I’m still scrubbing tires and having blowouts so I’m getting ready to replace both axles with 6,000 lbs axles and using the other springs that were too long to 3,000 each spring. Also after watching your video I’m going to do a more thorough inspection of the frame for cracks.

Used to live up there! Great to see a Sweet Bran truck coming out of the bay…..they smell good! Panhandle people are the best.

i used to change my leaf springs every two years. found one would bust in the 2-3yr range. also the roads i took and the weight and speed would pound em to death. in the long run changing them out before a road break down was far cheaper. nice that the shop found and fixed problems during the repair and keeping you safe and on the road.

So nice to know there are great companies out there. Canton Ohio is not typically on the lips. Wife spent 4 years there.

It’s amazing how many leaf springs break on travel trailers and fist reels to me that just shows they’re putting underrated leafspring for the weight that you’re carrying. Stay safe you two.

Hello you two. Interesting about the spring. On our Solitude we ended up one at a time breaking springs. Then the nightmare with the shackles. Then the rear end was swaying all over (suspect broken frame). Well after beefing up the springs and finally getting good shackles on. Replacing the tires with G-Rated we were fighting the sway on the rear which was a danger. Grand Design ignored us at this point as their best people had left and started Brinkley. Well anyway I'm too old to fight all this crap so we bought a Brinkley. Love it.They have been the best. Some of the owners I knew from GD. Burlington Bill Busking on the road and on you-tube.

We love staying at Harvest Hosts. That said, we recently stayed at a winery. We had the "large" charcuterie board $18 which was literally 6 small slices of pepperoni and maybe 8 cubes of cheese. The pretzel bites (6 tiny pretzel bites) $10. A wine taste flight and 1 bottle of wine to go. The bill came to $82. WTF? I could have stayed at a great campground with water, electric and showers for that. As I said, we love staying at Harvest Hosts but....

Good place to break down ..I bought me a extra spring for such problems. Thanks for sharing information

Oh man, that sucks to loose a spring like that. I guess it happens - has not happened to us yet. Glad you were not far from a mechanic. Awesome they found those cracks and could fix them too.. We have serious apprehension about this on our trip up to AK this year - roads are terrible up there I hear. I keep a spare spring but really don't want to replace that on the side of the road (probably be raining too!). Great video - entertaining as always and great information you share. Broken leaf spring in NM, been there. I had all 4 replaced too. I kept 2 of the ones that came off and tossed in the back of the truck, just in case.

I had the same thing happen in Provo Utah. I ended up replacing all four myself while parked in a campground. Unfortunately the spring also wiped out one tire also so four springs and four tires later life was good again. Always an adventure right? Great video!

I'm reluctant to tell you this, both springs should have been replaced. If one is fatigued, the other one is likely to be also. 😐 Y'all be careful out there...

Is this part of the Grand Design, frame flex, ,I keep seeing on line? You also had to fix the slide out too. Just asking. We will be staying at Amarillo on the 19. Almost crossed paths.
