This interview shows so well in language and emotion the period of time shortly after when you feel so stripped of long held cherished spiritual identity that has finally suddenly broken. I can hear in his voice the same feelings I had of having your spiritual worldview be completely vanished in an instant. You feel so scrambled mentally. I can empathize with him. When you talk about your experiences after the collapse like that you feel so nebulous as to what your core identity actually believes. It takes time to pick up the pieces but I can relate so much to this period of time in my recent experience leaving my Mormon beliefs behind. Creds: Born in the Covenant, Baptized at eight, Served an Honorable Mission, Temple Ordinance Worker, and Married in the Temple.

May I ask you a few questions about your experience? I'm trying to understand things about a very different religious and cultural experience to mine (atheist, growing up in a catholic area) and I would like to ask questions but it's hard to search for the answers online without getting a lot of vague or off answers. Or troll answers. If not that's totally okay though!

I loved the way you eloquently answered her questions...with grace, with strength, and with pride. My sister and I watched this together and we both got choked up. I was rejected by the Mormon church for being a woman that wanted to go get a PhD and be a scientist, rather than get married and pop out kids at 20 years old. I was even punished and ridiculed as a child for being so inquisitive. I went out and found the answers to my questions, and even though my relatives and the Mormon community shuns me for being true to myself, being true to myself is the only thing that makes me happy. :-)

To all the Mormons who got upset at the music video for Trash: Did it hurt? Did it sting a bit? Good. It’s a powerful song and art piece that was meant to. You got to feel the smallest sliver of the pain you’ve caused your LGBT members.

You think that only LDS are against LGBT? This is not an LDS doctrine, this is a doctrine by 99% of all Christian/ Muslim/ Jewish churches. Now in regards to LDS, it’s not only LGBT relationships that are not ideal, they feel the exact same for Herero people who have sex outside marriage. Stop focusing on Gay, but focus on the principles which are being faithful and loyal to one person. To rear families with and raise children in a loving home

Tyler is so raw emotionally you can't help but feel some closeness to him while watching this interview. Such a powerful image of an individual transitioning through a faith crisis. Whether you feel Tyler is gaining something or losing something through this transition, you can't help but feel love for him. However unlikely, should you ever find your way back Tyler there is space on the pew next to me. Whatever your future, I wish for your happiness. And peace.

I understand his feelings and how tough that must be, but blatantly mocking the church, or anything/anyone for that matter, in ways such as what was done in this music video is extremely disrespectful. Common decency and respect I feel would be nice. It's strange how no one leaves the church quietly... What a slap in the face this is to people who value and believe in the teachings of the church. Still think he's a talented and good guy at heart, it's just heartbreaking to see something that I hold so dear to my heart mocked.

+Steezicus I was just putting my opinion out there, not trying to start some huge fight. It seems if anyone defends the side for a religion then they are called some nasty misogynistic bigot, while the other side against it is always full of rude/attacking/oppressive comments and everyone seems okay with it. A little bit ironic. There are an exceeding amount of strange twisted lies about the churches past that people like you always flock to. People of all races, religions, etc. make mistakes. There are murders, rapists, criminals, and more in all corners and societies of the world. It happens. But the church does so much more good than bad. They are always quick to respond when tragedies happen and are always attempting to aid those who are in need, such as the refugees currently, the natural disasters in the past, and other humanitarian efforts. All the oppression and hate that is thrown at the church only makes me believe and know it more. Definitely an influence there.

+David Brown you can believe what you want. I really don't care. I know what I know and people perceive what they want to perceive. I'm 2:44 in and I cannot agree more. I cant say that I experienced what you have but all my childhood my family was this great controversial gossip fest and my brother and I were sort of labeled before we could have our personalities shine. Before I was 10 years old everyone isolated themselves and I never realized that I was sort of slut shamed due to my mothers actions and frowned upon due to my fathers brain. With that being said, I don't think they realize what they teach. You can't cry up on a podium about how grateful you are for the free agency Christ gave you and then not be supportive of equality. Regardless I refuse to be surrounded of people who judge my friends & do nothing to help the psychologically impaired. I love literature but I will not take something that's been re-translated over and over again for years and years, so seriously. I've continued my faith on my own, realistically. Thank you for saying something!

Think about it this way. If someone breaks up with you, even if they were 100 percent in the wrong, how much of your life are you going to spend dwelling on that relationship, and trying to prove to everyone else how wrong the other person was? And how is that any different than leaving the church? Some of you anti-Mormons need to get a life. If the church really made you miserable, great. Accept it, cope with it, but go find some damn peace in your life and let go of this obsession.

Let's see - he spent his entire life a faithful Mormon. He obeyed every law. He served a mission honorably. He held a temple recommend. Then the church decided that he has no place in the church, if he marries for love he is an apostate, his children will have no place in the church, all he has given to the church counts for nothing. Go ahead. Discount his entire life, all his faithfulness, because now he is obviously a "narcissistic victim" who just wants to sin.

I hope Tyler Glenn reads this comment and I hope he takes the time to comment back to me specifically, I would like to engage in a discussion with him and I would like him to hear my personal opinion of this music video. I would really like to talk to Tyler and share with him my perspective of this music video and listen to his response. It would even be cool to meet with him in person and have a discussion with him about this video. Tyler, are you there? Disrespectful acts and mocking acts are always justified. Let me explain. People always have a justification or reason to bully, mock or disrespect a certain person or group. History teaches us that violence, disrespect, mocking, and crime are always justified. Am I right? Disrespectful acts, bullying, mocking, violence, crime, hate.... etc.. are always justified from the perspective of its supporters. Whether you are a violent Neo-Nazi or a violent Antifascist protester. All of it is always justifiable. One might think: what if my perspective/reason to commit an act of disrespect is more justifiable than another? What if I let myself think that this group, individual or organization deserves to be disrespected? Everyone thinks that their acts of disrespect or violence are more justifiable than others. I have this radical idea that we can solve problems in our societies and organizations through respectful and compassionate communication. Empathic listening. I have a radical idea that we can express ourselves and our frustrations in a way that is not mocking, hateful or disrespectful towards other individuals and organizations. I myself am an active and believing member of the LDS church and its doctrine. I enjoy and feel a need to take the time to hear the opinions of those who have felt harm in their lives by the church or its members. As I do this I would like to think I become a more understanding and compassionate member of the church and society. I think there are many great members of the LGBTQ community and other groups who feel ostracized or alienated by the LDS church or LDS church culture in Utah who are raising awareness to issues that we need to immediately solve. Such as the suicide rates of LGBTQ youth in Utah. As this dialogue has increased I believe that awareness has been raised towards these issues and that church leaders and members are focusing more on issues that need to be focused on and individuals who need to be helped. I think a recent example of this progress was the LDS church's support of the LoveLoud festival in Utah. There are issues to be addressed and problems to be solved. We need to urgently solve the LGBTQ teen suicide problem in Utah. To solve these problems, specifically in Utah, Mormons, non-Mormons, and anti-Mormons need to work together. This music video takes 100 steps in the wrong direction. Tyler, you were a former LDS member and missionary, and I imagine that you fully know that your gestures and acts in this music video are repulsively disrespectful to LDS members and could be considered acts of hate towards LDS members. Marring the portrait of Joseph Smith and spitting on it? Mocking religious symbols? Religious symbols that many LDS members deeply cherish and hold in their hearts. Words can't describe how hateful and offensive this video is to me. Is that how you really want to portray yourself to myself and other members of the church? Is that how you want to begin a constructive dialogue on issues you would like to see solved? To me the music video was hateful. Hopefully, you and others can see how this video is deeply offensive to me and others. But you are justified because of your perspective. What if I made a music video where I spit on portraits of LGBTQ activists? What if I found a way to mock something that is of a sacred nature to the LGBTQ community? I would be justified too, because of that possible perspective. Is this music video really how you would like to contribute to or start a dialogue? Is this really the message you would like to communicate? Do you really want to show hate to a specific person or group of people? Does anyone deserve to have their portrait disfigured and spit upon? Is this really the example you would like to portray to LGBTQ youth and other youth who follow your music? Are you wanting to encourage other non-members or anti-Mormons to mock members of the church? This video suggests to me that you would like to encourage (by making this video) other non-Mormons and anti-Mormons to act with greater hate and disrespect towards those who are LDS church members. This video suggests to me that you would like to encourage non-mormons and anti-Mormons to act with greater hostility and divisiveness towards members of the LDS church. Am I right? Are you trying o add to the hostility and divisiveness that already exists in the world? Should we mock the sacred religious symbols of religions we don't agree with or religions we despise? Is it justified if we have had negative experiences with the religion we despise? Is that the mentality you are trying to promote to your fans and followers? For example, I am very saddened and frustrated with the death and destruction that has been caused by Islamist Extremists. In order to retaliate, do you suggest I make videos where I spit upon disfigured portraits of the prophet Mohammed? Do you feel like that would help me engage in a constructive dialogue with that religious group? Ultimately, the music video suggests to me that you yourself would not like to contribute to a constructive dialogue to solve the issues you see in the LDS community. You could have made this video without such acts of extreme disrespect. I sincerely hope you take the time to read this comment and to truly consider the totality of my perspective. Tyler you are so fortunate to have become well known in Utah for your music. We all have the right to free speech but you have, even more, you have a public voice and platform that can be used for good. I believe that you used your voice and particularly your actions for hate in this music video and I am horrified by it.

God also doesn't condone acts of evil and you can't blame a church for wanting to follow what's right nor can you shit on people who are on their own journey who feel it's right for them because what you think is okay on this journey may not be okay with what other people paint as their journeys that are important to them. We can agree to be friends, but royally bashing something that has brought some so much happiness is your right and opinion, but don't expect not to get the same treatment. I'd be friendly to you of course, but in no way would i ever think it was okay to engage in that garbage. Your act of defiance as you say shouldn't leave a sense of betrayal when those who live their lives just the opposite don't readily accept something that goes against everything they believe God clearly condones. It's like pride month for example, not sure why it gets a whole month when there are other things that deserve more. People stop caring when it's shoved down their throat, so in a way, I get why you stopped caring about what you've been reared to believe. I find there is more peace in the message that the lds church provides (not people - we don't care about the members because we're all human and prone to being stupid) over what the world provides. People say they are free outside of the church, but I'd be lost. Lost as hell and wouldn't know what he crap I'd do. If you're happy great, but try not to crap all over what makes others happy. It's a trashy thing. You seem to be in pain and whatever remedy you find, I do wish it's something that means more than fame, etc.

The church does not hate gays. Neither does God. God works by laws and the law is that one cannot receive exaltation without a partner he or she is sealed to. A man sealed to a woman and a woman sealed to a man. When a bishop or any leader in the Latter Day Saint church says that someone can't be baptized or take the sacrament because they are actively gay, it doesn't mean that person isn't fit to be with God. It simply means their current choices to act on gay feelings is not in line with God's law of baptism. Christ said "therefore if ye know that a man is unworthy to eat and drink of my flesh and blood ye shall forbid him. 30 Nevertheless, ye shall not cast him out from among you, but ye shall minister unto him and shall pray for him unto the Father, in my name; and if it so be that he repenteth and is baptized in my name, then shall ye receive him, and shall minister unto him of my flesh and blood. 31 But if he repent not he shall not be numbered among my people, that he may not destroy my people, for behold I know my sheep, and they are numbered. 32 Nevertheless, ye shall not cast him out of your synagogues, or your places of worship, for unto such shall ye continue to minister; for ye know not but what they will return and repent, and come unto me with full purpose of heart, and I shall heal them; and ye shall be the means of bringing salvation unto them." (3 Nephi 18: 29-32) When somebody, such as Tyler, has committed sins of breaking the law of chastity or the word of wisdom, they are not to take the sacrament; and depending on the seriousness of the sin they might have other restrictions such as not holding a calling, or even being excommunicated. This scripture tells us that we should NOT CAST THEM OUT of the synagogues. PERSECUTION IS WRONG and I feel horrible whenever I see it. It is not the order of the church. I have been in the church for many years and I have seen that is is true, yet the members are not perfect. I feel bad for Tyler and anyone else who has been acted upon in cruel ways. If the scripture is true then Christ will heal you. Whether it is in this life or the next, whatever wrongs committed in this life that are out of your control will be fixed. In a resurrected body, Tyler will not have to face such sexual confusion nor harassment from other ignorant church goers. There he will be able to make his own decision based on pure truth whether or not he will follow Christ. I know that God is a loving God and that everyone goes through difficulties in this life; some much more than others and some difficulties are BROUGHT by others. It doesn't mean that the church isn't true, it just means that we still aren't perfect. There is opposition in all things. So if there is one true church, then of course the devil will try to persuade otherwise. We cannot look at the people of the church to decide if it is true because that can always change; instead we have to look at the laws of God and if the church lines up with what the scriptures declare, because the devil CANNOT change the laws of God nor his church and neither can God.

+makwaphy - "Just looking at him screams misery." What??? Try to be more specific. Sure, the lighting is bad (as you can see by comparing this video to other recent interviews of Tyler). But there is nothing about Tyler's demeanor the "screams misery." Haha. That is silly. To the contrary, he is very calm, relaxed, and articulate. Describing his current emotional state, Tyler says: "I feel like I'm flying. I'm so excited and happy and creative." So unless you can be more specific, it appears you are doing exactly as colorcountrykid accuses you of doing - you are projecting. More specifically, you are likely projecting your belief that Tyler must be miserable, probably because misery and sadness are the only emotions of a departing member of the LDS Church that fits within your narrow Mormon worldview. I can tell you from my own firsthand experience as well as the experience of numerous post-Mormon friends: there is plenty of peace and happiness out in the world that doesn't necessarily fit into the rigid structure of LDS Doctrine.

It is my opinion and only that. He is obviously unhappy inside, almost drug addict looking. Thank you for deciding I'm just some dumb LDS guy making things up, putting words in my mouth and telling me how life works. All from a stranger, as if it would make a bit of difference. Bigotry in it's finest form.

You have no basis to claim that Tyler is "obviously unhappy inside." If you listen to his words, he is clearly happy. He's certainly happier than his final days as a practicing member of the LDS Church when he discovered that the Church is not what it claims to be.

+Allison Nunez - I know that you would hope Tyler is feeling anxiety because that emotional consequence of Tyler's song would more comfortably fit into your narrow Mormon worldview. But the truth is that Tyler is actually transitioning to a happier, less anxious life. As Tyler states in this interview: "I feel like I'm flying. I'm so excited and happy and creative." After intense study, Tyler now knows the truth about the Mormon Church. He's done his research, and he knows about all of its falsities. He has learned that the Church is simply not what it has always claimed to be. It's a big lie. Like many post-Mormons I know, I expect Tyler to emerge from this experience happier and more enlightened than he has ever been. I suggest that you do your own research if you don't know what I'm talking about. First, watch Tyler's Mormon Stories interview. Then, google "CES Letter," and study all of the questions in that letter that are all meticulously documented by the Church's own sources.

There's a difference between being gay and acting on those gay tendencies. He makes it sound like he's alone in his affliction. My brother's friend is attracted to men but he fights it because it's his personal battle to fight. He doesn't give in to it. He doesn't let it control him and he fights it every day. When my brother told me about him being gay and fighting it I instantly hugged him and told him I was proud that he is standing firm when I saw him next. And yeah I'm straight and married to a perfect woman. But I still have urges. When I see a sexy woman, the man in me would want to get that number. But I fight it. I try every day to be BETTER than my natural self. Glenn here has given in to his natural self instead of being better than it and not letting it control him. But good luck to him. He thinks he's making a stand..he actually gave up.

or he is just embracing who he truly is? It is no one's business what his sexual tendencies is. If someone is attracted to the same sex it is not "an affliction" it's their sexuality and it shouldn't be something they feel ashamed of or have to suppress or "overcome".

Tyler, do you think that having a gay disposition gives you special entitlement? Must God and His Church really bear the burden of changing millennia-old doctrine and truth in order to give you a guilt-free lifestyle? Anger can blind. Selfishness can too. Maybe in a quiet moment, reconsider what you are doing.
@dre9657

Glen Danielsen I think you missed the point of this video. It's not entitlement, or selfishness. If you are offended by him or his videos you are not listening to him or his message, you just want to see someone trying to discredit something that I'm going to guess you've followed your whole life. The church doesn't work for everyone, the church has no room for anyone who questions any part of its religion. It's a very all or nothing deal, and when someone chooses nothing people who take the all seem to be offended because someone dared to question something that you decided to invest everything in

This is an articulate, emotional and a beautifully expressed interview that proves God is Love. One religion cannot ostracize anyone from the belief in God, based on semantics. Religious authority boils down to the ability to put faith before discipline. By accepting others for who they are, people are able to tap into the divine agape love of the Lord. Meaning,. God loves every single individual on this planet and is waiting for them to ascend and rejoin Him. Who cares what gender you are, what your sexual orientation is, what your race is and what judgement you place on anyone? We're all in the same boat of living this life by either filling the internal void with Love (that is God) or sustaining the empty void of "casting the first stone" in relation to what one person/religion deems as good or bad (hypocritical criticism). To judge another ,based on semantics, causes more harm than good. Love is infinite in form and void of a semanticists' criticism. Tyler Glenn hits the nail right on the head with this interview by imbibing EVERYONE with a single emotion; agape love. It is the only pure and real emotion God endowed the human race with. Tyler Glenn is gorgeous, inside and out, and God loves him. In fact, we all do. He is a pillar of strength, talent and enduring belief in God. I am proud to be a fan of his and ,even more so, excited/ecstatic to listen to the beautiful songs he creates. How dare anyone or any religion compromise the raw innocence of being honest, and judge him? The characteristic of God's enduring love is what Tyler Glenn encompasses and spreads to the human race. We should all be grateful for his bravery and diligence in the matter at hand. Plus, he makes the COOLEST songs EVER!!! I love TRASH!!! And, God loves Tyler Glenn and everything he stands for and creates. He is a visionary talent of pure love...that's the stuff God is made of. :-)
