This Honda Civic Type R EP3 goes through the entire process from rusty and rotten shell to fully restored underside that is better than when it left the factory. From health check to completed car, watch the everything happen step by step as this car gets saved from an early grave.

Olly pulls together all the footage from the full process of his EP3 Type R getting a full underside restoration with nut and bolt replacement and entire poly bush set. This begins with a health check of the car to see what condition the car is in. Dave at Motion Motorsport shows the areas that need addressing on Olly’s Civic 10 months before the work begins. This is a necessary step as it gives everyone an idea of the condition of the car before any work is booked in. It could also show if the car is even worth saving or not.
Once the work is booked in, the car gets dropped off for the strip down of all the components off the underside of the car. This leaves a bare shell that can now have all the surfaces ground back to bare metal. Essentially starting from scratch again, this gives a true indication of the exact condition of the car so that all the problem areas can start to be addressed. This takes form in cutting out any rust or repairing any hidden damage.
Once this is sorted the car gets covered in rust inhibiter and then goes into the repair stage. This is where the areas with rust are cut out and replaced with fresh metal. Exact plates are made to fit perfectly and give a factory finish when welded in. Once all of this is completed the Rust encapsulator is applied. This is 3 different layers to avoid any rust growing underneath again. This is followed by hand painted seam sealer that is applied to more areas than Honda does from the factory.
Once that has dried, it is time for the final coat which is an under seal. This protects the car from the elements. It is then reassembly time and this is where Olly opted for Motion Motorsport’s powder coat and bush package that also includes zinc plated hardware and new clips. Every single suspension component and bracket under the car is powder coated in a colour of your choice and all bushes are replaced with Super Pro polyurethane bushes throughout. This truly means the underside of this Civic Type R EP3 is better than when it rolled off the production line.
The way the car now handles is truly unbelievable and transforms the confidence you have in the car. To top it all off, the Civic then heads back for a nut and bolt check after 500 miles to make sure nothing has come loose.

Olly - thanks so much for creating such a helpful and informative video. Im literally at the same crossroads with my EP3 Premier Edition and im booked in with Motion next month for the healthcheck so this was really helpful..! Out of interest, do you know if the work makes the cars more expensive to insure afterwards..? Im thinking from both an accident / repair perspective back to the ‘new’ standard of work but also if having the work done makes the car more sought after and therefore more of a target for theft..?
@OllyRoss
@OllyRoss 17 күн бұрын
No worries! I am glad it has been useful and shown you what needs to be done! I don't know currently, It would be a very niche thing to steal as you would really have to know a lot about the car to even know about that work being carried out. I think they are all still too low level to be worth a car jackers time.

@@OllyRoss Okay makes sense! I live in Oregon (USA) and we have a very wet and rainy climate all year long. Usually our cars don’t rust too much, but we aren’t too close to the ocean and we don’t salt the roads when it gets snowy or icy.

Just finished it, even though I’ve seen it all before 😂 much better in one long video. Definitely given me motivation to save a bit on the side while also doing my other plans to eventually get this done. What are your plans (if any) to maintain this? Or should it just be fine to leave with all that work that’s gone in to it.

Don’t want to answer for him….but having done similar to an EG civic myself recently, as far as I can see there are 4 options, of which I myself would consider 2. Option 1, don’t use it, or maybe trailer it to the odd show. Option 2, use it on nice sunny weekends in the summer. Option 3, use it as you would any car, once a year, when you’re servicing it, clean the underside, and address any parts starting to look a bit tired. Option 4, absolutely cover all of you’re beautiful brand new underside with some kind of wax oil (I’m sure there are better alternatives)…..the kind of treatment you may do to a brand new car….but do it yourself concentrating on all the known problem areas. Yes it would just look like any other tarted up with under seal car, but you’d have your photographic proof and know yourself how mint it is underneath the protection……knowing you can dry ice blast it off in 5-10 years time and it will look like the day you picked it up. I personally prefer option 3, but I’m quite lazy so may be better off with option 4. The main thing is make sure you don’t stop using it. The best thing about these cars is driving them.

My plan is to just wipe it and wash it down every now and then really. As you could see from Dave wiping down the arch, it doesn't take much to bring it back to how it looked on collection day.

Helllo. I wanted to ask what direction you would advise me to take. I own an fn2 type r and it’s noticeably in need of a full suspension refresh which is obviously costly (wishbones, coilovers, polybushes, drop links etc). My question is I plan to do what you’ve had done (perhaps not quite to the same extent and detail), I understand the benefit of delaying said suspension parts until rust treatment as everything would be already off the car. But I’m so far away from being able to afford proper treatment like this. My car is completely standard and I have had it for 5 months. I don’t believe anybody has tried undersealing it and that’s how I will leave it until I get the proper job done (as you explained in the videos). Essentially I plan to put all my focus on the cars health and driveability prior to aesthetics and engine mods. Is it worth just going through with the suspension work now (as I can afford it) knowing that my car is at least healthy and safe from that stand point and then saving for however long it takes to get the rust treatment in the future. I initially had a plan to get it all done together along with a 500 quid underside job and call it a day but the videos you’ve done have opened my eyes. Or would you suggest that I put everything on hold and save up until I have a few thousand to put into a process like what you’ve had? I plan to never part ways with my car. Sorry for the ramble thank you in advance. 😁😁
@OllyRoss
@OllyRoss 4 ай бұрын
I would put it all on the car now and enjoy it whilst you save up for the underside. That is what I have done. If you are years away from doing something like this then you shouldn't wait that long to get all the other stuff on. As you can see, my car wasn't standard underneath before the work started. The benefit you have over me is the knowledge of everything now so you can make a proper plan

@seshelbow336
@seshelbow336 5 ай бұрын
Might seem mad now……but as the years pass, and they get rarer, then really good ones like this will become really hard to find. JDM prices will rocket as they approach 25 years old and USA can import them. Back in my younger years I scrapped 3 genuine EG6 VTI civics because they were getting a bit rusty and worth more in bits…..I’d probably give 3-4 grand to have any one of those shells back now in the condition it was when I scrapped it. I’ve given EG and EF civics away to friends for free years ago that would be worth good money now.
@OllyRoss
@OllyRoss 4 ай бұрын
You may say this now but in the next few years, there won't be many left on the road. Then it is worth saving any of them. Also, if I had left mine, it would have been too far gone to save and then I would have had to pull the car apart and sell all the bits. I would much rather drive it for the next 10-20+ years

First off I don't need to punch a bloody holes in your floor/skirt / arches to tell you those areas need rust repair 2nd there are plenty of undersealants that do not require removing everything to apply and coat properly designed to drip & expand as it cures they're more like a honey/wax vs rubberized and are also easily temporarily removed in areas if need be for repairs and re applied
