She Can't Believe It
''It's very hard for me to talk right now,'' said Sabatini, the first woman from Argentina to win a Grand Slam title. ''I just can't believe that I won this tournament. There are no words to explain this emotion. I've been training a lot to win it; I just can't believe this came true.''
While the victory brought Sabatini the biggest payday of her six-year professional career - $350,000, or $50,000 for each of seven victories at the Open - it validated one of the most important decisions of her life, to change coaches the day after she lost to Jana Novotna in the fourth round at the French Open in June. It was a demoralizing moment, especially in that she had been a semifinalist at the French in three of the previous four years.
Her game under Angel Giminez had seemed to stagnate, so the decision was made to hire Carlos Kirmayr, a former touring professional from Brazil with a mellow personality: he's a part-time drummer in a rock band.
It was Kirmayr and an American sports psychologist Sabatini had been working with, Jim Loehr, who began teaching her the advantages of approaching the net without fear. Never before the Open had the tactic worked so well, as she registered straight-set victories over Kathy Jordan, Isabelle Demonogeot of France, Sabine Appelmans of Belgium, 11th-seeded Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia and Leila Meskhi of the Soviet Union. In the semifinals, she beat eighth-seeded Mary Joe Fernandez in three sets.
''I was working with my coach very much to come to the net,'' said Sabatini, seeded fifth here at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens. ''I want to say 'Thank you' to my coach. We've been working together only two months now, and he already gave me a lot of confidence.''
''Nobody was expecting me to win this tournament,'' she said, glowing. ''I think that really helped me because they were talking about Steffi and Martina and Monica Seles, and I didn't feel any pressure. I was just played my game, started playing good tennis and worried about what I had to do.''

Steffi said years later that she had a real attack of nerves before this match, the worst she'd ever had until that point. She said the loss hurt her so much that she didn't leave her hotel room for several days. Gabi had a perfect game plan in this match, giving Steffi nothing she could bite on, pushing her back with her heavy topspin and getting to the net behind short, sharply angled cross court slice backhands that Steffi had real problems running round. Gabi would win 7 of their next 10 matches.

The problem with those shots , she put TOO much spin on those and it literally would slow down her shots , Seles would use those as target practice. Pierce and Capriati and Davenport all had losing records against Sabatini. Simply because Seles rarely missed. The others did .

Gaby was my all time fav player. Had all the shots and so much talent. Unfortunately it was her weak second serve that was the difference between Graf and Seles being no.1 and 2 in the world from 1990-93 and sabatini during the same period being ranked 3-5 in the world. Gaby should of won the 1991 Wimbledon title was only 2 points away from the title and would of had 2 match points if it was not for gaby missing an easy volley and in 1992 was up 4-2 v Seles In the semi finals of the French (gaby did not lose a clay court match in 1992 and defeated Graf in the final at amiela island and Seles in the final of the Italian Open) all the players were playing brilliant tennis. Believe gaby would of defeated Graf in the French open final that year. During her era of 1986-95 gaby was the 5 imo the 5th best female player of her era behind 1.Graf 2. Seles 3.Navratilova 4. Sanchez-Vicario 5. Sabatini 6. Martinez 7. Evert (from 86-89) 8. Fernandez 9. Sukova 10. Maleeva-fragniere

Brilliant, unexpected performance from Gabi. Conversely, a very unexpected performance from Steffi in a bad way, and indicative of her lack of confidence at this point in her career. She was to say later that she had a serious attack of nerves for this match, and didn't leave her hotel room for days afterwards, she was that upset by the loss.

Gaby's semi final against Mary Joe Fernandez is perhaps one of the most important women's matches of the 90s. If Gaby had lost that match, its very likely steffi would have won the final; Steffi would have stayed #1 for longer; Gaby probably wouldn't have gained the confidence to dominate Steffi in 1991 / 92 and Steffi may not have had the accompanying crisis of confidence she had in 91 /92. I guess it's possible that Monica Seles may not have been stabbed if Gaby had lost the 1990 US Open semi final.

Sabatini finally realized her potential with this victory and was just one serve away from winning Wimbledon in 1991 but let that one slip away. IMO, she was the Yannick Noah of women's tennis; a very talented albeit inconsistent player. She was much too talented to have won just one Grand Slam tournament.

Gabby had too much topspin on her strokes..that would pop up in the middle of the court for players to tee off on them...her game was more suited for clay....her serve was also very slow ...sometimes only 50 mph and again too much top spin....when you hit too much topspin the ball falls short...she should have had a little more drive on her shot...imo

@@michaelhenderson2657 Everything you said is true but, in her career, Gabby won 27 singles titles and was at one time ranked number 3 in the world. And she was just one serve away from winning the 1991 Wimbledon Open. Her game may have lacked finesse but most of her opponents had a very hard time hitting those topspin volleys.

Yes, I wholeheartedly agree with the latest comment about everyone being happy for Gabriella. Possibly not happy was Steffi back then, but I'm sure Steffi is even happier now for her great friend and compadre, as they are consumers of each's professional career with a very wise and respectable (and over their youth and growth over their prodigious phenom years undoubtedly promoted themselves in no facade or rigidity with all their amazing early adulthood when, particularly in retrospect as we can sense and know each other's admirable acceptance, gratitude and humility transforming in eye-opening welcome, even willingness to hope and learn contentment as both Graf and Sabatini share and dwell and celebrate in each's familiar confidences and intensities, oh what a huge delight and highly upright and representative of humanity highlighting these two champions' integrity and circumspective wherewithal to maintain appreciation and be respectful of each other and all surroundings in this prideful world we live in. My latest point is my favorite---Steffi and Gabriella were friends before this U.S. Open Championship Match.. And yes, only two years prior to this, these two geniusly became doubles partners and won the 1988 Doubles Title on the accelerated grass at Centre Court Wimbledon......Wow!!!! I love it. Not enough can be said for their equally courageous fortuitous hearts and insightfully generous mind with a fruitful joyous spirit to always be individual champions, but, in unity and edification reflecting each other in shared gifts and eternal kindness and goodness (as we all reflect one another) these two are Co-Champions in One Heart and one Mind, One Tournament, singularly as One. Now you cannot be serious!! Hearts flew up! Everything good in us grew up!!! Congratulations to these two beautiful women!! Two of the Greatest EVER Warriors on and off the court in every endeavor!! Hell, my own endeavors, my own vision and smiles I'm reflection of one another are a lot more enjoyable largely because of the likes of Steffi Graf and Gabriella Sabatini. So many more generous tennis-playing spirits as well that have been integral or instrumental in one way or another....Thank you also to Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova, what a light you two have been!! And thanks to Vitas Gerualaitis, (please forgive any misspelling). Thank you Arthur Ashe!! You personified courage!! Thanks to Althea Gibson, how very ultra gifted!! Thanks to Richard Williams and Oracene for producing two of our greatest. Thank you, ITF, thanks ATP!! Thanks Andre' Agassi so much for taking Steffi and giving her the best children and a supremely happy life. You two look like the most happy couple EVER!!! I have loved Steffi since I watched this 1990 US Open in it's entirety. My first to see all of any tournament. Boy and never missed her play one match after that. Call me a slow learner. Oh, and I adore you, too, Monica Seles. What an inspiring individual and a soldier you became....for all of mankind's history, Monica, Thank You!!!! I loved seeing your parents always in the stands and how supportive your mother always was to you and your father. I miss your ferociously powerful two-handed ominously penetrating beautiful shots. What the Champion you are in every aspect forevermore . Guess I better thank a few more players and genius folks like Nick Bolleterri. And don't forget the pistol Pete and Chris Evert. Pure love.....agape' ..

Horrible camerawork on the handshake, I would really have liked to see it up close, especially because they got along very well with each other. Steffi really did not have a good year in 1990, basically losing all Grand Slam titles after the Australian to her biggest competitors. Congrats to Seles, Navratilova and Sabatini, of course all outstanding players!

Tyson. Totally agree. Very good analysis. Gaby would have been number one in the world if she punched that backhand volley against Graf and took it. It would have cemented her at the top and given her the belief to keep attacking. I wonder if deep down she was exhausted in that 3rd set. I heard she lost a lit of matches because she was anemic and became very depleted in some matches.

Was too difficult with her game . Seles was hitting the ball harder than some men by the following year . Graf imo even more so by 93/94 . Sabatini was a big girl but the spin should have been hit deeper . She got away with 60 60 wins so many times in the early rounds . Then suddenly she would hit a monster hitter in the quarters and just swat her shots away .

I was a huge fan of both players. Of course, Gaby is beautiful and has that fight. Graf was just poetry in motion. I met them for the first time at the Family Circle Cup in Hilton Head, SC around 1985 or so. Gaby was just 15, and I think Graff was 17. Graff beat Everett in the finals to end her streak at that tournament.

They both actually played doubles at that US Open. Steffi played with Lori McNeil and Gaby played with Mercedes Paz. Carlos Kirmayr had started coaching Gaby just before Wimbledon. He told her that she needed to end her doubles partnership with Steffi as it was making her too deferential to Steffi. In Kirmayr's words, "Why would you play doubles with someone who beats you all the time?"

@Max E well, not really. Gabi had been playing really patchy tennis throughout the tournament, and her whole year had been up and down. Gabi had to really struggle through her semi final and everyone assumed she'd be exhausted, like she often was. Steffi by contrast had really brushed aside Capriati, Novotna and Sanchez Vicario. Everything was pointing to a Graf victory. Gabi had also never beaten Steffi in a grand slam (and never would again).

sabatino-graf was considered more rivalry than seles-graf because, as of that time, the former played many times against each other than the latter. And I think sabatino went on a streak of 8 consecutive matches that she beat graf (AND THAT IS WORSE THAN WHAT SELES HAS DONE TO GRAF) but graf still won most of their headtoheads anyway, 29 - 11

She was aided greatly by a very flat and weak performance by Graf in this final though, not to mention aided by Seles and Navratilova both going out before she could even play them (had the draw held she would have had to beat both Seles in the quarters and Navratilova in the semis).

Ralph Bourgeois this was the start of Gaby wining 8 of the next 11 meetings against steffi. When Gaby used her heavy top spin backhand down the line use to hurt steffi all the time. People said Gaby lost confidence after the 91 Wimbledon final loss, but Gaby still had a brilliant first half of 1992 where she defeated steffi in the semis in Miami and final at Amelia island and def Monica in the final at the Italian open. The match that Gaby lost all her confidence is the 92 semifinals at the French. She won the second set and was playing absolutely brilliant when up 4-2 in the third then she stopped her attacking game style and just sliced her backhand. Also the 93 quarter finals where she was leading 6-1 5-1 v Mary Joe Fernandez shattered her confidence. She gained her confidence when she won the wta championships in 1994 and in Sydney in 1995 playing her best tennis since 1992 but was injured with a lower back injury and lost 1st round at the aus open in 1995 where she was the 2nd fav behind Sanchez -vicario (steffi was injured and Monica was still in mini retirement) but then played her next tournament in Miami in the semis and again up 6-1 5-1 lost 7-6 in the third to date. Gaby become so nervous it was terrible to watch. Even steffi and Monica have all said the Gaby was probably the most gifted and talented player they have played. She had all the shots except did a terrible 2nd serve

Ralph. You refer to Steffi being flat, but she absolutely thrashed Sanchez Vicario in the semis and Sanchez would in fact beat Steffi twice at the us open, so comjng into this final, Steffi looked like she was very much in top form. I think the first set Gaby played at such a high level. Even Carlos Kirmaer said his student Gaby played so well in that first set that it easily could have been 6-0. Gaby hit so deeply and didn’t let Steffi find any way to attack or feel comfortable. Gaby on the other hand played well in the semis against MJ, but played a level higher in the final. Gaby played the match of her career. It’s hard to just say that Graf was off.

Steffi, whose game became more predictable from the beginning of 90 on, was also less consistent in the rallies. Gabriela, who always had the game to disrupt Steffi's sliced backhand, played a lot more towards the net and revealed Steffi's weaknesses. Steffi could not hold the shock here. Gabriela was so much solid. If Steffi could have used more topspin backhands down the line maybe the score would have been different.

Max. Gaby also beat Steffi more times than any other player in her career. You referred to the two worst losses Gaby ever had to Steffi but Gaby in all fairness troubled Steffi more than anyone else. Most of their matches were also if very high quality. In fact they played 4 other times at the us open and they were all very competitive, with 3 going to three sets. Let’s not forget their Wimbledon classic in 91 finals when Gaby was 2 points away either. Their constraining styles made for an exciting matchup.

This was the year Graf's form and game for whatever reason fell WAY off from her 87-89 level dominance, especialy 88 and 89. She lost to Seles twice on clay, lost to freaking Garrison at Wimbledon, and a really weak limp performance vs Sabatini to lose here. Even nearly losing to the Maleeva sisters throughout the year. She would continue to play this poorly in 91, and while her form would improve a bit in 92 it wouldnt be until 95-96 and briefly in early 94, that she would regain her top form from the late 80s.
@th8257
@th8257 4 жыл бұрын
I think with hindsight, she was really burnt out. You just can't have that level of dominance without paying a price for it. We've seen it with other players who've been similarly dominant too - they develop a kind of post traumatic stress disorder. John McEnroe was never the same after his 1984 run. Martina Navratilova said looking back she was very burnt out after 1986. Roger Federer apparently used to wake up in the night in a state of anxiety and have to be calmed down by his wife. Novak Djokovic had also had some real dips after dominant years. You can see in some of Steffi's matches from 1990-92, she looks like she either doesn't want to be there, or she's so anxious that she rushed herself out of matches and look completely confused about what to do.

Seles completely took over her throne by force and became the new dominant queen until getting stabbed ..... that historic event allowed Graf to regain her throne as the top player . Well, life's not fair ... the media's not fair to Seles too, most sports writers nowadays fail to mention the stabbing event when talking about Graf as a possible candidate for the greatest player ever ... The stabbing should have featured prominently in the discussion of GOAT, half of Graf's 22 slams should rightfully be doubted as a special gift from one of her crazy fans ....

Graf did an amazing job of raising the women's game. Graf's amazing successful career was because Graf was able to maintain her tennis. Graf had injuries but she was still able to play and play through the pain. That's incredible. Graf's biggest weakness is the service return especially off the slice. From 1997, the women's game had champions that was able to take advantage of Graf's slice. From 1990, there was Seles, but a miserable deranged fan ruined Seles' career forever. Especially when Seles' dad passed away in 1998. When the Williams sisters were dominating, their biggest weapon was their serve. Graf made her service a weapon to match Martina Navratilova, the best all around player. Who knew women's tennis would create serves that would be even bigger and consistent. Hingis occasionally hit big serves but couldn't keep that up. Hingis had injuries that would hamper her ability to play against power players.

You surely were not born yet at that time. I have seen every Graf GS-final from a live broadcast. Steffi is /was a great player but also she is a human being. She was totally lost in that RG final for over a set and if Hingis hadn't choked totally, Steffi would probably only have 21 Slams. I feel sad reading these stupid comments from Selesians and DiehardSteffifans. Both parties seem to be lost in their own imaginary world.

I think she was plagued with nerves Gaby was. We saw it more and more often with Gaby. First Wimbledon 91, then French open 92 and 93, and at Lipton 95. She just tensed up when it was the most critical, in a tight match against the likes of Steffi or Seles. They managed to elevate, but Gaby also didn’t have that killer instinct they did. But looking at raw talent, Gaby was right there with the very best. She could hit every single shot in the book. When she retired, Seles said she was so surprised Gaby didn’t win many more slams because she was just so good. At the very least she should have won one or two French opens. She beat Graf and Seles so often on clay away from the French open and Wimbledon 91 was on her racquet.
