Belfast, May 1996.
A 17 year-old boy is bundled into a car by four masked men.
A sock is shoved inside his mouth to dull his screams. He is beaten before being driven at speed to an alleyway in the nearby republican heartland of Ballymurphy. He is removed from the car; his arms and legs are bound with tape and rope. His attackers hang him upside down on a wooden fence. It was like being crucified.
What happens next is what's known as a 'punishment' beating. Attacks regularly carried out in Northern Ireland by paramilitaries, supposedly, to keep their communities in order in order.
That teenager survived, though he was unable to walk for many months. Today, he is a father in his mid 40s who almost three decades after the attack, has received vindication. Paul Reid was handed an apology from the IRA for the brutal and cold attack he received as a teenager.
Born into a staunch republican family, Paul's father Patsy was a renowned IRA man who was jailed for the attempted murder of two judges. His uncle, Billy Reid, is described in the press as 'republican royalty' after becoming the first IRA man to have shot dead a British soldier.
His story is as far away from violence as it gets, it's about forgiveness. not only forgiving those who harmed him, but forgiving himself and asking forgiveness from God.

I met this man last week by chance in a taxi as I was going to work. He told me a bit of his story and I was absolutely blown away. This is a powerful testimony of the love of Christ, was a pleasure to meet him that day!! God bless Paul ,keep sharing your story! 🙏

Another incredible interview from Patricia. I stayed in Ballymurphy during the war and I remember at a republican concert, which included a "Firing Party", seeing a bloke limping around and I mentioned him to a comrade. My mate replied " He raped a neighbour and she reported it to the RA. The RA confronted him with the accusation, he admitted the crime and they gave him two options. Go to the RUC and plead your case or we kneecap you. He chose the latter. I was told that the volunteers called the ambulance service and said "A man is just about to be knee capped at such and such address, send an ambulance. Then they pulled the trigger. Justice in the war zone.

I grew up in NI in the 60's/70's probably about and hours drive up the road in the rural countryside from Paul's family and our upbringing's couldn't be more different. The sectarian issues were definitively concentrated in the cities and built up areas. From when I can remember I couldn't wait to get out off NI and have been for 42 years. I still retain the accent though and often still get asked which side I was on. Love meeting NI people but always sense an undercurrent when sizing each other up as to establish which foot you kick with. I usually revert to my standard joke "I used to be a catholic but I'm OK now "...that dissolves any potential discomfort. Great show as always Patricia.

Power full Paul, top respect, gods work is the only work ,and if you feel what you are doing is gods work keep doing it, I grew up in a Republican family up bringing to, and seen how sinn fein have gone one can't help but feel, bewilderment, confusion, disillusion, pain and heartache, when the chips are down, god will guide all,,your quote children of God or children of the devil is how I see it too, I to sang Billy Reid as a teenager and joe McDonnell, Sean south, galtee mountain boy,, these songs ya never hear anymore, Irish unity that's been talked about today is a facade, and will never be what we expect or what people died for,, amazing brother,,wish you all the best in life

Super interesting story, I’m from a unionist family but not involved in terrorism, I had mates from poleglass who have the same story as this man. I think it’s ironic the people he grew up with who were supposed to love him were the ones to cause most hurt. The ones he was brought up to hate were the ones trying to help. Great he found God, it’s the only way forward, good luck!

I can't believe he has forgiven them, it takes a really strong man for that. I would have been looking for revenge as I got older, thugs like the Provos forget that they grow old and would be a prime target for a fitter, younger man like Paul.
